Pat you could always buy another domain from a reputable registrar like GoDaddy and forward RockTheMicBooking.biz to it. I know it's will be a pain in the arse but it's probably the best way to get out of paying $100 to those slime balls.

I own rockthemicbooking.com as well, and it has sat dormant for a while.

It runs through yahoo, and I have the ability to transfer for it, but of course there is an issue with that too, lol.

It expires in 2 days, so Godaddy said to just wait for it to expire and then rebuy it under them, so that is what I am going to do then just cancel the vistaprint one and order new biz cards.

The thing that ticks me off is that I order my biz cards through Vistaprint, and I don't know anywhere else to get them as cheap as I get them from there (I get 500 at a time for $5.95).

Why not keep the com version through Yahoo?

I have hundreds of sites registered through Yahoo, and their uptime is second to none, the people speak English, etc.

Little bit more money, but service is the best with them, IMHO...

Pat, renew that .com or else it's going to go into the redemption period which means Yahoo holds it for 30 days before it's dropped (released to the public) Yahoo can charge you a pretty penny to bring it out of redemption. I've seen some registrars charge upwards over $100 to bring a domain back, then you're in the same boat as you are with the .biz. If you renew at Yahoo, you can still transfer to GoDaddy, the transfer will just add extra year onto the expiration date.

Then there's always the chance that someone back ordered the domain and will get it before you, seconds after it's dropped from Yahoo. It's well worth the fee to renew it through Yahoo.

A couple reasons.

One, I would like to have everything under one bill.

Also, my podcast is going to be starting next week, and I am going to be using GoDaddy's service for hosting it, and I would like to have be able to have it linked right into the website and Itunes at once, which GoDaddy does and Yahoo doesn't.

And then it is much cheaper through GoDaddy it you take advantage of their yearly rates.

gee thats why living here in OZ unless you have a Business in Australia thats the only way you can get a .com.au name

and if you didnt get that name the other company would have to release it as its in your name not thiers as you have the business name and not them

I love Australia

On hold with yahoo right now, hopefully they will be more helpful than vistaprint was, lol.

Oh man, there is nothing like spending all day on the phone with tech support from companies!!!!

On hold with Yahoo, here's the latest snag:

I went to reactivate the .com one through the yahoo website, everything went fine until I get this message:

"The Yahoo ID you entered is not the ID which was used to cancel the domain".

Well, since I only have 2 yahoo id's (one personal and one business), I tried the personal one and got the same messge.

Called Yahoo, and after about 5 minutes of verifying the account, they tell me "the ID associated with the account is rockthemicbooking".

No it's not, because that is the one I tried, I tell them.

They said they had to escalate it then, because that was what they were showing in their system. I said fine.

"It can take up to five days to get it resolved" the guy tells me.

I told him no way, that the domain expires in 2 days, and I need it renewed before it expired because I did not want to lose it. (did not tel him I was transfering it).

Been on hold for 10 minutes now while they try to resolve it.

Well, here it is:

Nothing Yahoo can do. When the website was canceled through them earlier this year, the yahoo id used for the website was also canceled and the tie between the id and the domain was servered.

So I have to wait for it to expire (in 2 days), then just check everyday for when it becomes available, then snatch it up with GoDaddy(before one you guys do just for fun!!!!!). Then cancel the one with VistaPrint.

Someone tell me why a website is important again please!!!!!

we do all of our own domain purchases through our domain buying company "Big ideas" my first ever site was a network solutions I had kyleshannon.com and then the guy who owned agency.com who's name is Kyle Shannon offered me $2500 for it so i sold it because it was just a resume site for radio then he went belly up and now its porn i think.. lets see.

now it looks like an apple hold page of some sort

anyway.. wow my registration is all f-d up but at least i own it.

You could see what vista charges for forwarding and then create some other site at godaddy put in a holder thing for the domain when it releases we had to do that with 1stcarolinadjs.com because one of my competitors got a hold of it for a year, we went with 1stcarolinadj.com and now the plural version is just a forwarded name that we own.

Godaddy is really easy to use

I could probably let you have it for $1200 or so Patrick :sqlaugh:

You might have an idea here Patrick if you are scared of losing it you have a whole team trying to buy it before someone else does and resell it to you at cost

Or, after all this and the potential struggle to get even your yahoo one back, you could just give VistaPrint their damn 100 bucks and get on with your life.

From the point of just getting things over with I agree with you, Wayde.

However from a principals standpoint: I'll walk over a bed of glass on top of hot coals before I'd give Vista Print 1 red cent of my money. Registering a domain in your name on behalf of your customer and holding it hostage for profit is just sleazy business practices. It's akin to a DJ taking a deposit and never showing up.

It's not good enough that he paid $15 a month for X amount of time, thus covering their registration cost many times over. Now because Patrick wants to move the domain away from them, they want to stick it to him without the Vaseline. That just ain't right. As for the $15 a month for hosting. For a basic site, for a service as large as Vista print that's a total rip off. Hard Drive space is very cheap these days and companies like Vista Print buy bandwidth in bulk from the big 3. It costs them pennies per year to host a few page static website.

I haven't looked at Vista Print's TOS but I bet the fact that you only rent the domain from them is buried in small print.

Thanks for the advice guys.

After taking a little nap to cool off a bit, I have decided to just let the yahoo one run out and buy it back through godaddy.

I am also thinking of keeping the one on vistaprint and somehow figure out how to route it right to the .com one once it is set up. I really don't like the idea of someone else being able to sweep in and pick it up.

Good luck with that.

Go back and re-read Dan's post (#23), there is no way of telling when they will release it. Some will drop it right away, some hold it and give you the benefit of renewing at some point. You also don't know if sombody else already has a backorder on the name. And, the biggest threat, there are (sleezy) resellers who scoop up any and all domains as they expire, hoping to cash in on the people who forget to renew but really need that particular name.

So you need to weigh the risk (probably 50/50) that you will not grab the domain back.
