Hi Folks,

vBulletin released 3.7 yesterday the newest version of our forum software. This update includes a lot of changes, most notably for members is 'social profiles' you can make public comments on people profiles, much like MySpace. Also the existing buddy list functionality, is extended so you can add friends and your friend avatar will show on your profile. Sounds like fun, eh? :D Also members will be able to have their own photo galleries. There will also be social groups, you can create you own groups for instance RockIt or Bose users and they is a private messaging area just for that group as a whole, I think I'm not 100% sure how that part works.

That's the preliminary from what I've read and what my test installs show. I'm sure there is other stuff. I don't know exactly how everything works right now so we'll probably run into a few errors along the way. :eek:

I'll be installing 3.7 either sometime today or tomorrow morning as I'm going to have close the board for it. When we reopen, the portal will be gone it's got me annoyed and I haven't had the time to make it look really nice like I wanted to.

Anyone have any questions or feedback?

I could honestly do without the portal, although it can be cool if you have tons of time to keep it up to date and all (I suspect you have about as much free time as I do Dan -- which means basically none) :sqerr:


I'm happy as long as the shoutbox is around, the sky is blue, the grass green, and water still flows downhill :sqbiggrin:
 
So we can have the bikini group then... eh? ;)
 
I use the side menus for banner display and other items that don't have links in the main menu. I wouldn't duplicate.

BTW - templates are a pain the arse. But, SMF has some really cool tools that tell you exactly what to do to get a MOD to work properly on any template other than the default. And, it's free. :)
 
This site, as it is now, is more then enough "social networking" for me. Do we really need profiles with public comments, private user groups and buddy lists? Half the fun of this particular board is the off topic comments that are practically required in any thread. We've already seen how well private user groups go over. And I already consider everybody on this board a buddy, otherwise I wouldn't be here.

Just my 1.8 cents (there Sarge, I figured it out) ;)

I do agree. I'm not really happy with the way vBulletin went for their 3.7 release but it's best to stay with the latest code branch for security and feature compatibility plus it's more features for the members, I'm happy that our members get more 'stuff' but don't care for the MySpacesque type stuff. For the most part I'll probably ignore the profile comments feature except for exchanging banter. :sqbiggrin:
 
We've been upgraded to the latest and greatest. I got just about everything working, I broke the layout of the homepage but everything is still there, I'll see if Colleen can spare some time to fix that. Also, I'm going to have her try and doctor up the profiles they look a bit messed up with the gradients.

You can now customize your own profile with colors and stuff like that.. You can have personal photo galleries and comment on others profiles, check it out. Let me know if anything doesn't work.

Social Groups I don't know much about.. I'm gonna start one and see what happens. :)

Rick you still living in 2005? :D Social bookmarking it's all the rage. Free back links for us. Digg, I'm not sure if you're familiar with it is a 'social news site' basically people Digg or vote pages up. The more votes you get the more people see your link and click on it. Del.icio.us (aka Delicious) is a bookmarking service where you save your bookmarks online, consequently you have a page of bookmarks online which get crawled by the spiders, free backlinks to us from who ever bookmarks our site via delicious. Google bookmarks is pretty much the same I think.

StumbleUpon is the newest thing it's a pretty neat time waster. Basically someone stumbles a site via clicking the link or a toolbar, they 'stumble' into a specific category and when someone else is bored they use the toolbar to stumble onto sites, if someone submits a thread on ODJT to say the music category and another person "stumbles" through music they may land on our site and vote thumbs up or thumbs own.

New sites like Digg and Del.icio.us are cropping up all over the place. On the webmaster forums people are even selling stumbles. lol Leave to webmasters to sell something that's already free. :sqlaugh:

I don't do any of the social networking things, so I had no clue whatsoever :sqembarrassed:

Yeah, I don't follow it much either. I had a delicious account way back when just to have my bookmarks always available to me reguardless of what computer I'm on, Now I use Foxmarks to sync my bookmarks across computers.

Digg has it's own user base, typical young males that argue over which gaming platform or operating system is better for days on end.

Webmasters have ruined Digg by using it as a traffic tool.. Dig me I'll dig you that sort of thing. Therefore the system is slanted into a popularity contest between webmasters.. Stumble Upon is going the same route with some webmasters building networks and voting through proxies then selling 100 stumbles or diggs for $5. lol

With the help of my trusty sidekick, Danny Boy I'm pretty sure I got all the missing images fixed.. Like I was telling you via profile comments it's just a few of the same images we already have and are in use, they've just been copied and renamed for 3.7

Next on the list is that funky looking red and gray for field names, I cannot fix that, it needs new image.. I'm waiting on Colleen for that. :)
