Ha, had one of "those calls" last night. Some lady from Chicago. I'm guessing she googled and just started calling phone numbers. Told me her friend is getting married, a week from tomorrow and she wanted to inquire about my DJ services.

For some reason, I don't know why, I blurted out "Sounds like somebody cancelled on you." She said, "No, it's a rushed up deal and we wanted to surprise the bride for her reception." I have to admit, it surprised me a bit that they'd be trying to get married BEFORE having the baby (tongue in cheek). Seems most knocked up chicks want to do the wedding afterwards so "I won't look fat in my pictures." I told her our basic package starts at $700 and goes up to $1500.

She then lights into me "Wow, that's expensive. I only paid $350 for a DJ for my wedding in Chicago!" I guess she was waiting for me to flinch and offer her a deal but, sorry chicka, no dice. I almost shot back a zinger but refrained and stayed silent until she hemmed and hawed and finally said "Well, thanks anyway." FWIW, I'm personally working that day already so it would've been sub-contracted and frankly, I pay my guys more than $350. That call reminds me of how good a move it was to post my prices on the website. It filters out 99% of those crap, tire-kicking calls. I'd forgotten how much I hate being berated for my "outrageous prices".

Anyone that calls us for a last minute wedding gets a higher quote right off the bat. Some people have taken me up on it but most have done what this person did to you. Way to stick to your guns.

I'd LOVE to be on the other end of the phone if she would call back
after discovering that your price is actually reasonable!

$350 for a Chicago wedding sounds cheap to me.
You shoulda asked her if she was HAPPY with her $350 DJ.

What would you expect her to say??????

You said you forgot how much you hate to be berated for your outrageous prices. Are your prices outrageous for the service you provide? I wouldn't say your prices are outrageous unless you're delivering sub par services for the price you charge. Now if you decided to do that wedding for $350.00 that would be half your starting price to do a wedding. That would not be good because they would pass the word on that we got this really great DJ for only $350.00. Which would hurt your business in the long run.

Besides that if they were planning to surprise this bride, then why would they wait till the last minute to try to book a DJ? Now from what I've seen you post on here it looks to me that a client who books you is getting more then their monies worth.

You seem to have missed the "rushed up" part. The girl got pregnant and they are doing a hurry-up wedding so the child won't be born a ba$tard. I commend her (the bride) for that. The family apparently has decided to throw a decent wedding for them.

ODJT DA hat again - Could have been a close family friend that gave her a break on the price. Always remember, can't assume anything - assumption is the mother of all f!@# ups.

Regardless, I'd still be curious to know how she really felt about the bargain DJ she got!

Of course, she could have just been LYING to get a deal.

She must have gotten a CL DJ as the company I work for here in Chicago charges pretty average rates:

These are our current rates for weddings receptions:

Saturday Weddings: $995 for first 4 hours, $145 per additional hour

Sunday - Friday Events: $895 for first 4 hours, $145 per additional hour

I'd definitely charge the most I could for a rush like that. Usually end up being aggravating as ...

Not a good reason to get married to me rush or not. I say you marry for love and that the person is a good responsible person. Not because of the lady being pregnant.

And obviously you don't relate "responsible" with taking care of the new life that you've created and providing a decent family structure. Bravo.

One of the biggest reasons why there are so many little bastards being born today. Let's have sex, reproduce and then abandon our responsibilities.

No I don't. I think Kirby said it best about being there for the child. That doesn't mean you have to get married to be a good parent to the child. There are some people right now who are married and are only together for the kids sake. That's not healthy to me. Kids don't need to be in a house where parents aren't happy with each other but just there because they have kids.

Now back to the question at hand on what would you do. Would you do a wedding for $350.00? Thanks Rick for not caving in and sticking to the prices you have on your website.

You don't have to be married to be a good parent .. but you probably shouldn't be having kids if you're not willing to raise them properly in a family. I don't know many parents that want to go it alone, just to be a good parent. The people who are married for the kids sake, most likely did not get married for the kids sake.

Forget that argument. How many would lower their price to get a client to book them and if you do how much of a discount would you give them?
