woofer went out on my ZXa5...

To many ads? Support ODJT and see no ads!
....EV made a boo-boo and sent me a wrong replacement woofer...they sent DVX 3150 which is only rated @ 500 Watts into 8 ohms....

does anyone know what the model number for the replacement woofer should be?
 
okay, I just got an email from the tech @ EV, I was told that I have the right replacement speaker...the old one was silver and the new one is black....that was what sparked my curiosity. .... AND...
If speaker is rated @ 500watts, how come the ZXa5 is rated to deliver 1000 watts and 250 watts into the mid/high???

Its called headroom. also that amp may put that amount at peaks not continously.

The speakers were doomed before the gig because of the configuration of the rig. Powered speakers will give years of good service with just a direct signal. I agree, I think using a crossover & a processor with the powered speakers was a no-no.
I also own a set of the ZXA5A's, Directly from the mixer. These speakers have more than enough thump, no need for other stuff.
 
A 1,000 watt amplifier is correct for a 500 watt speaker based on theory of doubling the RMS rating of the speaker. The theory is this provides enough headroom so the amp never goes into clipping thus prolonging the life of the speakers and that makes sense for rock, but current dance music uses so much electronic bass that you could easily cook a coil if you aren't careful.

As for connecting powered speakers directly to a mixer - only if you don't have an EQ or a cross-over. All speakers drivers are the same, they don't care if the amp is in the same box as the driver and it's an active speaker design or if the amp is 50 feet away and it's a passive speaker design. Using a cross-over to split the signal into low bass for a subwoofer helps the main speaker in many ways. The woofer doesn't have to struggle to produce low frequencies, the cone surface less distortion cleaning up the mid-bass to midrange frequencies, the wooofer coil gets less heat, the amp runs cooler and is less likely to clip, the tweeter will live longer because the amp is less likely to clip, etc.

An equalizer is almost a required tool as the acoustics of any space change due to temperature & humidity, human bodies absorbing acoustic energy (and they are always moving around), speaker location and direction interacting with room acoustics and many other issues. Having an EQ allows you to correct for some of these problems and learning how to use an EQ should be a DJ 101 requirement. Even the whizbang automated controllers with calibrated microphones don't EQ the room for music. They set the system for flat response at the location of the microphone (probably not where everyone will sit/stand unless it's a very small party) and that setting is typically set when the room is empty so it's definitely wrong as soon as people start walking into the room.

I think you need to repeat this once, every day. These guys just don't get it. In their quest to "Lighten" loads, take up little space and spend as little money as possible they are forever sacrificing good sound. As long as they hear something coming out of the speaker when they turn it on, they are happy. They refuse to try out what you myself and others are advising them to do. I posted this here this morning for the likes of those who feel processing is not important!

I have to step in on this. Some rooms determine the level of Audio required. These days I often do mostly events that hold less than 150 guests and the venue room is comfortable with less. Most simple systems will provide. I use my Cadillac even for these as it is efficient slow and low or High level energy with the Boom. I bought it for this option.
 
Remember this:

Always bring more than you need, it's better to have it and not need it than needing it and not having it.
 
UPDATE...yes another Update...but, I believe this should be the FINAL update... :tribiggrin::yomoonwalk:

The brand new replacement woofer-speaker that EV sent me was fried within 1 hour of performance time. I was in a midsize room..about 300 wedding guest, but the other speaker (which has been my life-saver for about 6/7 events) was able to handle the room for 4 hours without blinking and the volume was only at about 2.30..setting was on HIGHPASS, and working hand-in-hand with 1 Yorkville LS 801P.
After that, I contacted EV and they were nice to give me their UPS account # so I can ship the whole speaker to them on a next day shipment and promised to get the speaker back to me before my Friday Gig. (I was highly impressed with that..that is probably over $300 cost...due to size & weght)
They checked everything and decided that the problem must be with the amp/crossover, they reconed the blown speaker, switched the amp and I got my speaker back as promised last friday...and the speaker performed as I expected for my Friday/Saturday & Sunday gigs...
EV ROCKS!!!

I'll bet it cost them a lot more than $300! I shipped a 10lb package the other day to a customer and it cost $118 just for that. I can't imagine what Next Day both ways on a 60 lbs package would be. LOL. You're right... EV rocks!

You like the Yorkville sub? So it matches up well with the ZXA5. I use a pair of York NX 750PB. Have you compared the two in a side-by-side test? I've been hearing great things about the ZXA5. And, you do you use only 1 (one) LS801 P with the Tops?

I've used almost all Yorkville speakers... the 750's are great speakers, but are bulkier than a ZXa5. The 750's gives you built in mixer that adds a line in (4 a cd player or any media) and a microphone...incase you are doin a simple set up that require that...ZX only has a Main Line In & Out.
ZX delivers a nice low way more than the 750's. As for the sub and zxA5...YES they work well together...the LS 801P is an awesome sub...but heavy as a Lead.

I'm glad that all my head aches are gone re: my issues with the ZXa5...which was an issue I brought on myself by using the BBE Processor with the system which I found out its NO - NO...which I found out the HARD way....

I highly recommend them. and to the comments about RCF, we own those also and they are just as solid. It all depends on which price point you are shopping in but I would consider the ZXA5's almost second to none

I also have 4 ZX5s and really like them I´ve used 2 per side a few times and the volume and clarity are wonderful!! Are you plnning to use more than 2 per side?
