They may have been 802s .. we called them (maybe incorrectly) 801s .. name just stuck in my mind. And this was back in 78, so maybe.

Canute seriously you have never heard or felt the GTRs they dont call them the Orbit Shifters for no reason.
 
I don't believe that I have actually heard them but have seen the specs. By the way, for a speaker to perform per maximum spec ratings they have to be properly powered. However, if they were, what was proposed for 1500 people is a bit of a stretch for those people to really feel the bass. 2000 people can hear my scoops but they would sound like shyt for that amount of people by themselves.
 
we Ran four Earthquakes with two GTD Amps. Not only could you hear really great tone but you could feel the compression in the room as if it would burst when the doors got closed. You could feel it throughout and very prominent throughout the room. 1000 easily covered. I will soon show you an over the top setup we provide for another 1000 kids. There are specifics that also make a difference according to the dimensions of the room top to bottom.
 
Orbit Shifters powered by some Really bad ass Lab Gruppens..NICE!
My buddy just sold his I-Tech 8000's and has re powered his whole rig with Lab Gruppens,
He runs EAW JF210 tops and JBL SRX 728's (2 a side) I will be his LD for a country band he took on, so i'll get to hear this rig with lots of people present.

And lets say it wasn't bad at all with the I-Techs..But he says the I-Techs have "no punch" to them.
So he dropped $20,000 on the labs

You can't beat JBL for cross-rentability. If you pick up 728s, you can always find another pair to rent if needed. Or if you get 2 pairs, there's always someone to rent a pair. JTR an EV make great stuff .. it's just tougher to find matching pieces if you need them short term.

I agree Steve... JBL it is. My friend and I had a meeting about everything today and we have decided for now to do the JBL SRX722s for tops and JBL SRX728s for subs. For the sub amps QSC 3602s and QSC 3102s for the tops.
 
The JBL 728 is a solid sub to get. BUT...unless you will always have a roadie...I would look at double the number of 718's...just for portability and one-man load in/out. And, if you have a roadie, you can always tie a pair together. ;)
 
I would make sure I have the shows booked first, then make sure I purchase the system that will be the most accommodating for those and similar ones I'm looking to book. It would also depend on how many shows I have booked.

If it's only 1 or 2 that need coverage for 2000 people, I'd rent the extra stuff I need.

Most of my equipment has been purchased AFTER it was needed for an event. I've never bought equipment and then tried to book shows with it. Don't think that your equipment will book shows for you.

Investing 20k into equipment is not a small step. How did you come up with that number? A budget should be well thought out.
You should determine what you need and then determine if that makes financial sense.
 
I say Yorkville Elite for the tops and bottoms and a crown amp. Not sure which amps but i know 2 DJs that use Those tops and bottoms. They kick butt! Don't know what the cost would be but whatever it is they are more then worth it!
 
If I were to use Yorkville, It would be either the TX series (which kick butt), or the Unity tops over Elite big-a$$ subs. The new Paraline array stuff looks interesting, but haven't heard anything about them review wise. I have Unity tops/subs .. sound great, but the Unity subs are more "musical" than kick-a$$.

Trust me Scott, I have that covered. No worries there.

Thanks guys for all of your suggestions. Before we purchase everything, I've decided that I may fly to Chicago and Atlanta to hear the JTR and Danley stuff... OR see if a local sound company has any of it to get some opinions and even listen:).
 
Not trying to sway ya ( ok I am) but once you hear the orbit shifters all those other subs will sound like transistor radios, it is that big a difference. The tops are as close to Hi Fi a pro top can get, he actually sells them as Hi Fi speakers he just re arranges the coax position in the cabinet.
