Friends and I are were saying that there is a "Boys Band" that comes around about every 5-10 years.

We figure that they were as follows"

Bay City Rollers
??
New Kids On The Block
Hansen
Backstreet Boys
Boyz II Men
??
??
Please fill in the blanks and/or rearrange the order.

Thanks!

One of the original boy bands, The Beach Boys

There's also The Monkees, Menudo, B2K, and the Jonas Brothers. I hesitate to throw The Monkees in the mix though, because as I understand it, they actually played instruments.

You mean the Jonas Brothers don't...oh noooooo my world is sooooooo ruined...hehehehehehehehehe :sqlaugh:

Jonas Brothers aren't really a boy band, they just happen to be brothers. I wouldn't call Hanson a boy band for the same reason.

Nobody mentioned the Backstreet Boys or Menudo. Or B5.

I'd have to argue that the Jonas Brothers and Hanson are by definition boy bands. They were created to target a pre-teen and early teen audience. None of them have any real musical skills to speak of. I mean sure the Jonas Brothers "play" instruments on stage, but if they could really play, why do they need a full band backup (a band just as large as The E Street Band)?

How about B4-4 or O Town, now there's a manufactured boy band. Also don't forget the Old Kids On The Block because after 20 years they're not new anymore.

young...

Hanson actually played their own instruments and although they were targeted towards teens, their music has matured after MMbop and afew of their later albums always debuted 1# on Independent releases. The only back up musicians they had were the parts that they didnt play, meaning Bass Player and extra guitar player.

Van Halen
Rush
ZZ Top
Led Zeppelin
Temptations
Four Tops

These guys were all as young as the current BB's when they started.

Age is only part of the equation though. Talent level does have a lot to do with it. Also were these fabricated bands designed soley to sell albums? I'd venture to say that at the same age, Alex Lifeson of Rush had more talent than all three Jonas Brothers combined.

Amen to that!!
I guess what sparked my input was the Beatles that someone added.
Also the Jackson 5 and many of the others posted were immensely talented.
And I thin the definition of Boy Band needs to be determined. You have a great start with the designed Soley to create albums. Good call!

That AL video is great... But let it be known that many of the talents in these boy bands are capable of plying like that as well. They are truly talented, most of them.
Justin Tmberlake?
Ricky Martin (Menudo)
Bobby Brown (New Edition)
Michael Jackson (Jackson 5)

Thanks Johnny.

Personally I think the Jonas Brothers are a great example. They were put together (as opposed to bands who come together) by Disney to target the pre-teen and teen audience especially since Miley Cyrus was getting too old for that audience.

So how's this for a start of a definition?

- Put together by a producer or a company
- Designed to sell albums to a particular segment of the population

Yes, we did.

Okay, Menudo was mentioned. Oops!

Why does Prince use a full band at his concerts when he plays almost every instrument on his records? Because it's impossible to re-create the studio sound in a live setting without a few extra sets of hands.

Eat your words. As a musician, I can assure you that both Jonas Brothers and Hanson have the skills.

I take it you've never seen a band like Rush in person. Everything you hear in a concert is created on stage by one of the three of them.

But of course, the true test is time. I highly doubt the Jonas Brothers have the talent to stick around for another 10 years, let alone 30.

No doubt that Rush are excellent musicians; the same could be said about U2. One of the best live shows I've ever seen, and I'm a keyboardist.

Unfortunately, time is no longer the true test. If Rush were starting out today, they might not survive 30 years either.

Great discussion!
