I hear ya'! My clients tell me all the time about the $1200 screw-ups they've hired in the past.

Is it wrong to compare other DJs to myself to measure their success?

I have no problem with posting your views on what a real DJ is or isn't but to say that a real DJ must be a Full Time DJ is BS you know it and I know it.... those attitudes about the DJ world are more suited for that other DJ board...

There are many tests that I use to determine if I am really a real DJ. Being a Full Time DJ is just one of them.
Another test is if someone close to you had something serious happen to them while you were en route to a event or at the event, What would the DJ do? Thats another yard stick I use to measure Real DJs by.

I'm going to quit calling myself a "D.J." and, when somebody asks why, I am going to say, "Because at least one person without any visible credentials on a DJ forum said that I am not a DJ with nothing to back up that claim other than the fact that he or she told me so."

I have seen this argument spawn 3 times in two years, and no one seems to agree on what a "real" dj is.
So here is what I say......
There is a such thing as a "REAL BAD DJ"......and a "EH, ALRIGHT..DJ" and there is the "GREAT DJ!"
Do you know who determines who is a BAD/ALRIGHT/GREAT DJ?
Our customers and clients! How complicated do you have to make this topic. You can have 13 bar graphs....demographics..full time vs part time...etc etc.....who really cares!
If it wasnt for clients buying our services how would we ever be able to gauge how good or bad we are?
Would you ever think a client would really care who a "Real Dj" is??
The biggest factor, I personally see when dealing with clients is value for their dollar! Are you doing this??
I can tell you, not everyone will ever agree on the definition of a "Real DJ!"
I think the only way we can truly gauge ourselves is on our performances!
Have you honestly sat at your table at a dj events, and even considered....any of these.....
Is this DJ Fulltime or Parttime?
Is this DJ a bottom feeder?
Is this DJ in it for the money?
If you actually have thought about this watching a DJ, you are a nerd...or a DJ! Plain and simple!
Sit back and assume you are watching a DJ, and he/she was doing a great job...would you honestly ask yourself...."Is this DJ a Full Timer??"
Not even close! Some of you guys just need to focus on the more important things that you can improve on and things as such. This whole "Real DJ" definition is not even possible! There are so many levels of Djing, that one cannot even begin to start a reasonable definition in which all could agree.
Imagine hiring a contractor..........if you know the contractor is good at what he does.....do you even think to ask him....Are you Full time...part time?? Do you undercut your prices to get business?? Do you do contractor work for the money?? Not usually.........your main concern is....Am I going to get the work I need done for a reasonable amount of money!
I guess I am thinking too much on this subject and I am sounding just as stupid, but hey....heres where I am at.....
Personally I could never begin to settle an argument on who is more of a Real DJ over another. A particular DJ may have more experience and skill as another, but it doesnt exactly make him a "Real DJ!"

I am a real Karaoke Host/DJ. What you or anyone else call yourselves or me is of absolutely no concern to me or my business. By the same token, what I or anyone call you is equally irrelevant.
If you really NEED validation, make a list of the ten people in this business that you most respect and poll them. Of course, they'll be so tickled to be on your list that they will tell you OF COURSE you are a real DJ, and any fears you have may be eased....Howsabout that?
