B/G First Dance and Lights?

It depends on what lighting set up is being used at the wedding. If it's the 2 Acrabats then I will turn them on when I open the dance floor to everyone. If we are using 4 HES Trackspots then I will have them programmed to highlight the first dance. It really adds a nice effect to the first dance.
I had four brides in the pass year ask for us to place a spot light in the center of the floor to highlight the moment.

Ambient stuff but nothing to wild and crazy. We have a follow spot package also as an add on.

It depends......I use 2 starballs - I normally check with the photographer to make sure I don't interfere with the shots....I've had them ask me to put a shade on the dance floor with my pars....

I'm finding that for the 1st waltzes the house lights are usually up full...If that's the case I don't turn them on.

I turn them on simply to add some atmosphere......

I only turn on me LED cans and point them toward the center of the dance floor. The moment we are ready to throw in a faster song, thats when we turn on the 2 intimidators, 1 isignia, 2 dual gems.......

It nice to keep the floor simple for the first dance. The pictures also come out alot nicer. When you have lights shooting all over for the first dance looks like crap. We have been doing this for about the last 5-7 months, and its working great!

Does anyone turn on their DJ Lights on the Dance Floor when the B/G are doing their first Dance. If you do what is the reason behind it?

I use a starball and color fill lights.

What do you do Cesar?

I use a mirror ball also ,,, the classics are hard to beat and when they come up and you start the song, it's nice to hear the "ahhhhhhh's"

because NOTHING is as special as the mirror ball.....

1. If there is room, a mirror ball with colored spots.

2. Oceana.

3. Nothing.

Really depends on the room, the client and what I feel like...:sqwink:

I'm sure someone else has sited this as their reason for and against lighting but I will just put my 2 cents worth in for S&G.

It would depend on the natural ambient lighting. If it's early and the light of day is still pouring in then using lighting would be relatively pointless unless they insist on us using it.

If however, it is later in the evening or we are in a room where natural lighting isn't an option we will most certainly use our lighting to set the mood. We would use any color washing light fixtures we have plus any others such as, a mirror ball or other like fixture.

Let's face it if all you have to light your dance floor is harsh florescent lighting anything even a simple Par can is going to be better.

Thoughts?

It was looking at the picture of the B/G doing their first Dance in the Request Line thread the Worst DJ that prompted me to ask this question. The DJ was using Par Cans and you could see Red Spots on the Brides Dress in the pictures.

I would think that any light that changes the color of the Brides Dress or puts a color on it that will show in the pictures during the B/G First Dance would be Taboo.

I know that some Brides might get excited about Lights but they don't think it all the way through how it will effect their pictures for those special moments.

That might be true with pin spot type Par cans but when you're talking about washes.... that color can add a certain amount of drama to any photo... however, I would leave that to the photographer to decide if my lights are too distracting... I tell them ahead of time that lights will be used and for the most part it's not a problem... most photographers carry or should have enough fill light with their flash units to really make the lighting a non-issue.

I think what's more important, is to ask the couple during negotiations what
THEY WANT. Explain to them during the negotiation period what your lights do, how they affect the look of the dance floor, etc.

Personally, I like to abide by the rule that Less is More. In other words, the less lighting that is going on during that time, the more emphasis that will be placed on the couple on the floor.

I like using either a very slow fade with the L.E.D.'s or just the static color wash that Par 56 wide floods provide.

And just for information sake, for those of you using Par 56 or 64 cans, a Hamburg Rose gel (Rosco) uses a combination of diffusion and a pinkish color base that REALLY brings out the natural skin tones in ANY shot.
