Whew, I am glad yesterday is gone. Crap started when I arrived mid afternoon to setup for a Gig at a Sports Bar for their Grand Opening. A two piece band was originally scheduled from 5.00pm - 8.00pm after which I was supposed to take over and do a combination of Karaoke and Dance music.

Well unknown to me the start hours for the band got changed from 5.00pm to 3.00pm so I arrive just prior to 3.00pm and the band is spread out all over the setup area. Now about a week and a half ago I specifically requested that the band meet with me so we can decide on setup area for them and I. Everything was settled at that time. So I arrived and they were trying to tell me they left space for me. "Where?" I asked. "Up in the air?" Needless to say I made them move things so i could put my speakers where we had originally agreed they would be. They were not happy but I could not care. You guys talk about untidy wires, you should have seen their setup with rat fur speakers and powered mixer balanced on a stool. There were some people there but not that many.

Fast forward to about 6.30pm, my GF comes walking in the door asking me why Idid not return her text (I had not checked my phone). She was in a panic state. Turns out the car could not shut off and the key could not come out of the ignition. I opened up the back area showed her the two battery terminals and told her to go home and take them off and the engine should stop. About 20 mins later she calls and said she did what I told her to do but the engine was still running. She drove back to the Club and the battery terminals were off (Surprised me that she drove and it did not shut down). I noticed that there was some sort of wires going to a connector that looked like an inline fuse. I pulled it apart and the engine stopped. So I sent her back home and instructed her to do what I did which she did.

Now I have to take the car to the dealer tomorrow. It is my fault to a point that this happened because there is a recall on that vehicle 2010 Chevy HHR for that ignition switch. I kept on putting it off so now I have to deal with this tomorrow.

Going back to the club now. The band finished playing at 8.00pm and they two guys said they were going to leave their gear where it was until the next day. I almost blew a fuse. I told them they were being very stupid for leaving band gear with unprotected speaker legs on a dance floor, sharp edges from cymbals exposed as a hazard to people if they decided to start dancing. They took down one of the speakers and placed it directly in front of one of my scoops. I said to one of the guys "If you don't move that speaker from in front of my cabinet, I will and you may not like where I may put it." He grumbled and moved it. What a jerk!

Fortunately, it was only 20 minutes at the end that got devoted to dancing with only a handful of people left after I announced Karaoke was over. 5.5 hours straight of Karaoke. There were about 10 Asian people there singing everything from Pop to Rap. It was hilarious. Over all, everyone had a great time, the owner said he now wished it was just me instead of the Band and I and they want me back on a weekly basis. I have played at this venue before under prior ownership. the place is exactly one mile from my home. I personally had a large group of people who came on my invite, about 35. Karaoke screens worked fine. They even had another TV screen daisy chained from their projector.

I will put my rat fur JBLs up against your prehistoric Bose ANYDAY.:tritongue:

Oh yeah, glad your party turned out well.

I will say that Rat Fur covered speakers tend to stand up to live sound work and come out looking better than most painted/duratexed speakers. I've had Yamaha S115 and JBL MP215 speaker pairs and both looked very clean when I sold them after years of use.

What are you talking about prehistoric. The Bose 802 are still being manufactured today, only the design has changed and not by much!

They were Sonic speakers.

That's the equivalent of stuffing the tip jar... ;)

But, that story was a good Rick Ryan on your part -- you covered everything from battery terminals, to sharp edged cymbals, grumbling, jerks and even ethnicity -- hell, you even got some anger in there...

I'm proud of you :sqlaugh:

No I know the problem, you don't know how to read , if you did you will see that i went there and discussed setup with the band member. ;)

But....you did a site survey and STILL had a problem? It couldn't have been a proper site survey or else everything would've been ironed out. At least you didn't have to improvise. ;)

The purpose of a site survey is to come to an agreement on where you and your gear would be setup. If something changes on the day, you have an option to either compromise, if it does not inconvenience you and if it makes sense or you can stand your ground. In this case I decided to stand my ground.

I like performing with bands, but sometimes bands try to treat DJs like they were trash so I was not about to allow any disrespect. If one waits until the day then they don't have much wiggle room and most often will have to deal with what is handed to them, including being stuck in a corner.

Geez Canute...
that was a great report and an even better story.
Did you really have to go there on THIS one?

What is so wrong about that statement??? Now that YOU brought it up, is that something that upsets you because it is a regular occurrence on your part? You have to remember I actually see that happening here in Houston with some of these DJs. We all know that is indeed a fact that if it is left up to the Venue or Client that they think a corner is what is needed for a DJ. One one person can change that type of mentality. That person is a DJ who is not afraid to speak up and negotiate to get what he/she wants.

I did not bring it up, you did. And THAT is what's wrong!
The statement has always been true. I have never disagreed with it.
It's the fact that you have to take every opportunity to repeat it.
Like just now. You used MY post as an excuse to throw the same sh*t against the fan, all over again!
And for the record, it is not a regular occurance on my part. The only thing REGULAR is my response, which I mention every time YOU regurgitate the same worn out speech, to make yourself feel better. (or superior)
WE KNOW, ALREADY!!!

Whatever Mike, whatever. You seem to always get upset whenever I mention "in the corner". You know what, maybe it is spaced repetition, if it is repeated often enough, maybe some DJs will quit allowing the Venues to push them around. By some who allow this to happen to them they just create a problem for those who don't.

I really don't know why you'd think that. You never seem to see anyone else's point, even after "spaced repetition".
Then again, if you repeat it often enough, maybe you'll just p*ss people off!

Have you ever stopped to consider that you and others may have heard/read it before but we have newbies coming on all the time? Should they not have the opportunity to be informed? Don't be selfish!;)

Got the car back today. Wrecker came and picked it up yesterday. They installed a new Ignition Switch, plus new Battery. It seems like the malfunction caused a problem in the battery. Total cost to me $0.00. They even came and picked me up at my home when the car was ready. They also washed and detailed it. Service with a smile! :)
