Weddings Wedding traditions which should be dumped..

If I were king of the Wedding World, 2 things would immediately be gone: The garter part of garter / bouquet, and the Dollar Dance... Now, fortunately, in my area, it does seem like the Dollar Dance has gone extinct... I find that TOTALLY TASTELESS.

for as amuch as I hate some of the "traditions" at a reception...
I always seem to find a b/g who are totally psyched about doing
the dollar dance, the full garter-bouquet, etc.
so for as much as WE as DJ's may be dead-set AGAINST it
there are brides out there who can't wait to do it at THEIR reception!
and as long as THEY are into it...
I can't help but to join in the enthusiasm!

We go with whatever the B&G want.

For our personal reception, Ducky and I are looking at the following.
- Intro
- 1st dance
- toasts (BM & MoH only)
- parent dance (combining both the F/D & M/S into one dance)
- special Greek dance
- a specific last song as folks are leaving, but NOT a last dance

You know, I really should have thought that through more before I typed that one. There's a special group line dance thingy.

Ron, I'm sorry your family is dealing with this heartbreak. You're a great dad to send the ladies away to re-charge and think things over.

I may not have been a DJ at weddings but from personal experience, the garter thing has to go. It's awkward for the bride and the groom tries to make it look funny and then it's weird for the guy who catches it to put it on the girl who caught the bouquet. At my wedding, my young teen cousin caught the garter. Time to see who catches the bouquet, a cute 20ish friend of mine. Oh that boy tried hard to get the garter up to the top of her leg! LOL She was flipping out and not knowing what to do, the video is actually quite funny.
I still don't get what is supposed to be so special having the bridal party who didn't know each other before the wedding dance with each other. I know it's a tradition but why can't they all dance with someone of their own choosing as a way to get more people on the dance floor? I did that too but I made them suffer through 2 songs. First was the bride/groom dance, then the bridal party and then the 3rd slow song was for everyone to join in (while the bridal party still had to dance together). It was tradition but now I think it's corny and strange.

Sometimes, it's EXACTLY what makes it entertaining!
of course, it depends on the crowd.

not just a tradition, it's a chance for the photographer to get a nice, candid shot of the couples. I know, my wife enjoyed having them.

As for the poor guy and gal at your wedding...
I had a 14-year old girl catch the bouquet...
and a 30-something football player catch the garter.
never saw a look of horror like that...before or since!
needless to say, we congratulated them both and skipped the rest!
(to which they were BOTH grateful)

I can imagine just how relieved that guy was. lol

I really havent done much traditional stuff for years

most brides and grooms in my area do it how they want to do it and tell others to GTFOH
I wont repeat them here

but as most know its not a matter not to do them its when a bride and groom have told us NOT to do them

Ron,

As many others have said it is best she found out he was Gay before the wedding!

My second wife came home and found her third husband in bed with another man!

She was an emotional wreck for two years after that.

Ron,

Thanks for sharing that here. I know it took a lot to post that and open up. It's cool. I think you did the right thing by sending the girls to Florida to get their minds off of things. Smart man.

I completely agree with you about the traditions. I know for others to say that that's too tacky or too cheesy or I don't do that, I don't agree with that philosophy at all. Clients hire me to direct their reception, provide the entertainment and ensure that everyone is involved and has a great time. If the dollar dance is important to them, I find a way to pull it off so it's not perceived or presented as "cheesy" or "tacky". Good on you for what you did, and just like everyone else, better to find out now than later.

See, now here's the difference with some of us guys, or at least with me. If I came home and found my wife in bed with another women all I'd say is "can we keep her".

Our definitions of cheesy or corny may differ with those of the bride. If it's something the B&G want, it isn't cheesy.

All of us in this biz could probably fall asleep while Electric Boogie or The Chicken Dance are playing. We've done this so many times it's become boring ~ to us.

But to the B&G, it's something special on their special day. :)

*lol* We are so NOT doing the Electric Boogie or the Chicken Dance!!

We are doing the tosses, but no garter placement (there would be someone killed down here from that). We are not doing a wedding party dance, but we are doing a traditional first dance.

Them's fightin' words in NY Italian families... :sqerr:

We did/do the Chicken-Hokey-Alley-Electric-Conga-Tarantella-Bunny Hop

If the DJ can't fulfill our requests -- we uncheck our weapons at the coat room, and make our own fun... :sqcool:

We're just simple folks, with simple needs -- the DJ's job, is to shut up, and fulfill those needs :)

Yeah, to each their own. Which is why we don't want those things. I have done the chicken dance too many times for one persons lifetime.

Mike

Totally, that's you as a client and that's fine - it's our job to facilitate what you want - but so many dj's approach it as-if the CLIENT is interviewing for the event the DJ WANTS! :sqlaugh:

Talk about @$$-backwards!
