Transferring music laptop to laptop

I do it slightly different...

I have one master drive, with all music on it in WAV format. And I have two backups of that drive (one off site).

So I copied over the ones I might play (I'm not big on requests as I'm sure you know), to a folder called MP3 on the working master MP3 drive (which also has a backup). Then I ran a convert to MP3 320kb on those files while I was sleeping. Then that working master folder either gets copied straight over to new computers, or synced, depending on if I make changes. Five drives in total, not counting the ones actually in the computers, where the songs actually get played from.


Anyway, lots of the folks I talk to, have gotten those CL or eBay drives loaded with a couple hundred thousand songs that came off Napster and Limewire -- then they make copies for all their DJ buddies. While I try my best to discourage that, my software still has to handle that. Hence the extreme efforts to make sorting and searching faster.

Yuck...I see your point. Just obscene. I'm sure you get calls from people all the time wanting to do that.

Someone requests a song, I type it in the search and voila it is there immediately. I don't care if there is a nanosecond delay between one option and another. Fact is that it is there for immediate play. Where does sorting come about when you have to pick a song?

I sort much more than I search.

I like browsing through songs when I play -- so for example, I'll decide I want to play something in the country genre, so I click on that, and browse through the songs in that order. So, in Rockit, I just click the genre link on the left and pick country, which brings up all country songs -- then I will probably sort by artist, or maybe title.

If I want, I can sort on BPM, and find a range that might mix in with the current song playing. I can sort on time as well -- let's say I know we have 4 minutes until the cake cutting, I can quickly find a song at around 3:30.

I don't want to have ALL my music at events because that's way more to go through when thinking of a track to play. I'm doing the KISS rule here.

And if I need an obscure track, I always can hook up my Zune to mixer channel 4.

But I've never had to do that as I carry 12.000 tracks.

So Rick, will the DAC 3 play nice with RockIt? I need to decide between that and an HC 4500.

Jim forgive me here. How in the world are you using your software? What do you mean by "way more to go through when thinking of a track to play. "? You can create "Best of " Genres in the form of quick playlists IF you have to manually scan for a song.
I use Traktor, one of the features I like is I can hover my cursor over a song and it will pull up all songs similar to the one I am contemplating. I can't believe you are scrolling through everything to find a song.

That seems like a lot of clicks. In Traktor, the "tree" starts with The Collection which then automatically opens up all the songs sorted by genres. Under that tree, it gives sub directories by Artists, Labels, BPMs, Genres, Song Titles etc. Click on any of those on the left and it automitacally opens up and sorts your selected option on the right.
Even in Collection, I can sort by what I have listed to show in Fields/columns. #, Genre, Artists, Title, BPM, Time, Upload Date (Useful in finding the date when latest songs were added), Comments. There are also custom shortcuts searches that with one click will get me what I want.

Hmm...never thought of that. I have my music in folders by genre. But that would still require me to go through ALL my tracks to pick and choose what to use as "best of".

Rockit works similar -- you have just never tried it, so me trying to explain it, might be hard for you to comprehend...;)

It's not very difficult to use for computer literate people -- it mimics a lot of basic Windows functionality. The rest can RTFM and tutorials :)

Jim...I've got the same dilema. Bought a new computer (HP) and want to copy from my old laptop to new. Unfortunately, I don't have a software license yet for the new computer. This thread has helped me in my learning and thinking.

In my case, I'm thinking of doing the "copy" from external HD then from it to the new computer. The new latop will then become my gig/home laptop until I can purchase a "backup" laptop. Th OLD Laptop has issues and has been shutting down when using the internet when too many programs are being utilized. I also "disabled" the internet on that same laptop, tried a scan of my files for re-linking and the darn thing shuts down after it has gone through X-number of files. But, it works great when I'm at a gig and have only the OTSAV program and XL music library open. No problem...that's why I'm worried...just a matter of time before it craps out.

Anyway, thanks to all for helping me to understand the various ways of "transferring" data.

How old is the Laptop that is having issues? Why are you using it to browse the Internet?
 
Laptop nitially purchased in 2004; motherboard repalced, 2009 due to screen "croaking." Replacement was a "used" motherboard. Retained internal HD, however.
 
I've decided to make it real easy and make a backup of what's on my former main laptop using one of my external 500gb hard drives. Done and done...
 
From day 1 (old Red), I had a system where I did all my ripping and tagging. Made a nice lil folder called MP3. I know, very original. I also kept the Recordcase inside that folder as well. So each time I added, the recordcase also was in sync. Then, via my network, Folder Clone would make the gig units MP3 look exactly like the source master folder. Now I keep the entire library on both the main rip/tag system and a external 500gb drive. 53k tracks I have. Yes, a lot of filler, but sure beats prepping for gigs by moving tracks around. Just have it all with me is so much easier.
 
Hey Ed, speaking of Red 5.2, any idea why I had problems with tracks bought from Amazon and I Tunes (converted to mp3) not playing...i.e. getting an error message in the decks when trying to load? I'm guessing the tags were not to its liking.

Yes they were imported into the record case and they would show in the track listing.

Any idea how to fix those tags that RockIt reads fine but not Red 5.2?

If Rockit works fine and reads the tags then quit fooling with other inferior products. ;)

I have an old laptop with Red 5.2 that I use for playing tunes out on my deck and I'd rather not spend the money to get another copy of RockIt for it.

So there are a lot of newer tracks that I cannot play through it whilst out at the pool.

Just use Windows Media Player and Push Play!
