I'm done with this business. Too many family events missed due to working, too many late nights too. Too expensive to stay in with all the lowballers.

I've tried to add video, karaoke, light shows and more but I can't increase profit enough.

It's time to hang up my headphones and persue another course of income.

It's part of the job Chris. It has more good than bad, stick to it.
When I gave up DJing from 1995-1998 I felt like a fish out of water. I did it because my ex wife was a bitch and she gave me hell. I sold my 1200's, amps and speakers. After we broke up in 1997, I came back harder than ever before and I will never give it up.
Maybe it's the type of gigs your are booking. Maybe you are offering too much for a market that does not call for video and karaoke? I don't know!

Chris, if this is a joke, you are playing it out good.

If not, I would listen to Kevin and take a week and think about it. I has the same feelings when I stopped (mm, maybe I shouldnt be telling you this, lol), but as fred knows, I thought about it long and hard. Luckily, I had something fall into my lap which made the decision easier, but every now and then I do miss it.

He also forgot to tell us he's that because the Yankees haven't won anything for 7 years now he's become a Red Sox fan. :nah:

I know this is an April fools joke, but anyway....

Chris, I can't argue your time spent working, but you're gonna have to work away from your family. It's just part of life.

As for profits, the lowballers didn't hurt you. YOU did. Remember how much you enjoyed going out on the weekends doing simple gigs, block parties and such? You priced yourself out of the market by adding all the extras.

Why did you need light shows, video & Karaoke? I don't have them and I'm doing fine.

Sounds to me like you gambled more than you could afford to lose.

A solid sound system, huge library and professional MC skills are all you really need. The rest is fluff and you have to find clients willing to pay for it.

DON'T GIVE UP!
You need to sell all the crap and go back to being "Your Basic DJ".

Bigger is not always better.
 
Because of the date today, I'm waiting this one out.

The initial post was Today, 01:20 AM, according to what I see! I'm pretty sure that today is April 1, 2007. At least that's what my calendar shows.
 
Chris: I guess, I'm not buying it as I know you have a good sense of humor and like to yank our chains...:sqwink:

But if you are serious, don't get out of it completely (just be semi-retired) and take only the jobs that you really want to do.

And definitely don't leave here, as your contributions are greatly appreciated.

Chris has mentioned that it ain't no joke. I'm inclined to believe him.

This is indeed a crazy business. Sometimes it gets to be more work and worry than it's worth. There's nothin' wrong with lighting, karaoke and video... a large portion of mobiles have these investments.

Malaise is infectious. When the market becomes afflicted with it the service provider may feel the symptoms as well.
