For me it is Spike Jones.

From Wikipedia:

Lindley Armstrong "Spike" Jones (December 14, 1911, Long Beach, California – May 1, 1965, Beverly Hills, California) was a popular musician and bandleader specializing in performing satirical arrangements of popular songs. Ballads and classical works receiving the Jones treatment would be punctuated with gunshots, whistles, cowbells, and ridiculous vocals. Through the 1940s and early 1950s, the band toured the USA and Canada under the title, The Musical Depreciation Revue.

A few years back I had a WWII veteran that was planning a get together ask me if I had any 40's music. When I toild him I had a rather large collection he then asked me about Spike Jones and I told him that I had most of his stuff. That sealed the deal; he didn't even ask price.

At that function I played some of his stuff but I also got requests for the Hut Sut Song (Sammy Kaye); had it; Marizy Doats (Mares Eat Oats); had it; and so on.

One guy wanted "In Der Fuehrer's Face", a Spike Jones song making fun of Hitler. They were all singing it and being very loud with the Rasberries.

I did a couple more parties for these folks but, unfortunately, we lost the organizer last year and I think they are all just getting to old to do it anymore.
 
Ya know.....MOST of the people who remember Spike Jones are in Nursing Homes and Assisted Living Facilities.

Nowadays......when you say "Spike Jonez" its referring to the actor, screenwriter and director ("Three Kings," etc).

TO ANSWER YOUR QUESTION:

As I recall......there was a couple who were very much into Reggae/Ska........my huge collection of Marley, Burning Spear, Steel Pulse, Peter Tosh, etc.......sealed the deal.

(although as I recall....the reception wasn't so great because the couple's wishes of having a 100% reggae music reception was not as well received by their guests....) ;)

I have a very large reggae collection, as well as beach/shag music. So, I got lots of calls for that in my day.

Funny thing, last year I was in Jamaica on holiday, and the 'entertainment director' had his DJ rig going. He had lots of things to do, so he just set it up, hit play on his CD player, and walked away to places unknown. The thing skipped like crazy, and kept looping until it drove everybody (me included) crazy at the pool.

Skipper had handy dandy laptop with me, with my software and a few thousand tunes, and walla, I plugged in and let her rip on AutoMix :sqbiggrin:

He didn't leave the mic -- otherwise I probably would have gotten in trouble, as I had my fair share of local brew and other sundries :sqwink:

I know for a fact that REGGAE won me some business in the past.

On the flip side, I am pretty sure that my past fanaticism with it lost me even more biz.

BUN OUT DEM HOSERS, MON!

But I still ALWAYS play KING TUBBY & YABBY U during dinner!
 
Reggae works for me too, I have a large collection, plus I grew up DJ'ing West Indian nite clubs and was very popular in that scene. I love DJ'ing these types of parties!
Many of these clients are happy if you have alot of oldies,
such as "someone loves you honey" by June Lodge,
or "panty size" by Lovindeer
or "sorry" by Sanchez, not the one by Foxy Brown (ya mon!, test that Vinyl) lol! a real real roots ting ya know! ya cyaan't test dat bwoy!

this collection of Reggae and Soca/Calypso always seals the deal for me.
 
Wow, here I am thinking that having Spike Jones was cool. I feel old. LOL.

We have a decent collection of Bluegrass tunes. When I lived in VA, Bluegrass was quite popular for dancers of the over 40ish variety.

Few DJ companies carried Bluegrass music... so we had an edge there. We landed some regular shows with the Moose and VFW because of this.
 
You know what I find interesting? (probably not, but I will tell you anyway :))

I have a great C&W collection as well (bluegrass included), and I've found that
people who like reggae, also like country (count me in on that group).

That makes absolute sense.

But that is absolutely NOT the case in my town.
