Well a little late to this thread...

IMHO, the biggest (and most pointless) battles on DJ Chat were about:
1) Eating at a gig
2) Sitting at a gig

These would flare up about every three months.

I joined DJ Chat around 1999 never really expecting to be much of a contributor. My ex had volunteered me to DJ a mitzvah for one of her friend's kids. I had never done one and I asked my wedding DJ for advice and he pointed me at the forum. When I got there, I realized how much bad audio advice was out there so I started contributing. Five years later I was giving an audio seminar at Mobile Beat and Sid then decided to make me a moderator. I had met him a few years earlier as he and Bernie got me into my first NAMM show. He did that for three or four years before I officially started working in the audio industry (I mean, with manufacturers, not DJs).

Sid and Bernie were very kind to me in the early days. I rarely spoke to either of them but every Christmas, Sid would send the moderators a token gift. Moderators had no real standards to enforce. We made our own guidelines for intervening. I mostly focused on the gear boards which were generally tamer than the main board. After a while, I was the only moderator left on the site. Seems like each one had a falling out with Sid. I never had the time to read all the threads and stop all the fights by myself. After Sid blocked new members, the site started really dying off. If it wasn't for Rocky poking fun at Macho, there may not have been any traffic. Moderating is really a thankless job.

Fred and Shirl tried to get me to come here when this site first started. I stayed loyal to Sid because he got me into my first NAMM and made me a moderator. These two actions ultimately changed my career direction. Perhaps because I rarely interacted with him, I didn't get crosswise with him as some of the other mods did. However, I was missing the contributions as several good people were basically chased off the site (directly and indirectly). It is nice to see the familiar names here. And of course, some things don't change (Rocky vs Macho). I wonder how many people would show up at Mobile Beat if it featured a "Your mama is..." match between the two.

For someone that asked earlier, Bernie's full name is Bernie Howard Fryman. He often uses his middle name as his last name. He still KJs in Chicago and provides live sound services. He has kept his DJ profile very low since his retail business failed.

It was also reported that some customers and many of his friends lost money doing business with him.

I hope the reports were exaggerated.

There is some great stuff in this thread I pinned it for easy finding.

If anyone has stories to share from the board please do it here

I'm late to the thread. I think I was close to one of the original cats here. The Island Of Misfit DJs we were. I've been around chats since the AOL days, maybe a chapter in my book! LOL

IAfter reading posts here, yeah, I miss Jon and a few others, the guy that made Rocket? Shoot what was his name?

Big props to Dan for putting up a place. Since FB came around I don't hang as much as I used to, but when I pop in, I have truly enjoyed my time here and hope that people remember me fondly when I'm gone.... lol...

Happy Holiday to all no matter what holiday (if any) you celebrate - aloha

Rockit pro Dj was Rick. RIP

Funny, sometimes cranky hillbilly/hermit is way I'd describe Rick. He knew his way around computers. I liked him
