Are using cd's or mp3's?

Dude! That light set up has to go. I see where you are coming from with the keeping it simple aspect, but there are alternatives for them lights.
You are in the right place for lighting advice because some of the guys on this board run some really nice rigs.

More than the aesthetic part , because pretty and ugly is all subjective anyway, what I would be worried about is some kid touching those lights because they can get hot, or a bridesmaid accidentaly rubbing her leg against it and getting scorched.

Everybody is just too trigger happy when it comes to suing someone, you just dont want to be the one to give them the ammunition.
 
I am NOT saying I disagree...
BUT...
it just so happens that I'd love a big rig with all the bells and whistles.

here is my situation
1- a big truss system would not FIT in most of the halls in my area
2- I am a solo guy, getting older, with aching ankles...
3- this rig fits perfectly in my mini van, I dont have room for more gear
4- I dont always put it where you see it in the picture.

I if I had a bigger van
a bigger place at home to store it
if I played more gigs on stages, instead of being stuck in a corner
if I had a partner, or a helper, to make the loading easier

I'd probably have a different set-up.
But I don't

I'm a weekend mobile DJ who like beaing able to set-up or break down in 15-minutes.

Most of the time, I do setups alone. Sometimes I have my song help me (with private parties). A few times I have friends help me (My TIME crew).

In the video below, I did the entire setup ALONE, obviously - I was there early and it did take 1 1/2 hours to setup. But for me, it's worth that extra effort. Take a look...

Like most of us
If I had the time (and the money)
I would DEFINITELY have MORE STUFF!
But here in Eastern PA
we have MANY smaller venues...
that don't offer the room for big set ups.
in many cases, I barely have enough room for a 6-foot banquet table to put my stuff. I would never be able to do a truss and tripod light show.
but my little rig fits anywhere.

also, theres the question of "who am I trying to impress"?
I have never had a bride ask me how MANY lights I bring.
so unless the guests are also DJ's...it doesnt matter in the end.

keep in mind too...
my work is 99% weddings and a few small parties.
If I was booked for a prom, or a huge gig
I also work for the local concert production company
and would rent some extra gear

My 2 cents:

If you can't afford a lighting upgrade, I would buy a T-bar or two for a tripod, seperate your lights onto those...only bring one if space is an issue and get the lights pointing in the right direction.

If you do mostly weddings I would definetly worry about little kids getting burned and people running into them during open dancefloor. I would also worry about thier effectivness. When people are crowded on the dancefloor there would essentially be no lighting...or hitting them in the eyes.

When I used to have my lighting on trussing for weddings I would do the T bar thing when space was an issue.
 
Here is my latest wedding set up. Aside from the uplighting all I bring are the two truss towers which hold two 16 channel movers. The rest of what youre looking at is:

Black custom facade
Two JBL PRX 15's
One JBL PRX 18
 
Getting ready for a party! 2600 watts never looked so GOOD!
