Weddings Sometimes Requests Do Work!

Sometimes it amazes me when a young bride comes up with some song suggestions and you go....Yeah, that's good....Last night these 2 songs in particular..

I Only Have Eyes For You - Flamingos
I'll Stand By You - Pretenders


And one of the Groomsmen asked if we could kick off the open dancing with:

The Final Countdown - Europe

Believe it or not it really worked....Crowd was out on the dance floor pumping their fists, singing along, playing air guitar..it was awesome....:)
 
you would say yeah thats good even if you didnt particular liked it but for the reason that its her day and she chooses what she likes.i know some brides ask for suggestions but others seems to think that the dj has no clue.
 
Nah, they know I have a clue as I'm old enough to be their Grandpappy....:sqeek:

To be honest, she did give me a few stinkers which we stuck in the dinner selection.....:sqerr::sqwink:
 
My moment like that - years ago - was playing "I Want Candy" by Bow Wow Wow...... Place went so nuts it was actually a little scary.... but awesome, too. When I got the request I thoughtit might bomb.
 
Another request last night that worked that really surprised me was from another groomsmen:

Cyclone - Baby Bash

I can't remember the last time I played that song and it never went over like it did last night.

Bridal party was a very tight group and they were out to have fun!

I had Love Shack requested by the bride. All of a sudden the floor was pack with everyone doing a line dance to it. Go figure.

What? Listen to the client? I thought we were all-knowing, all-seeing DJs?:sqwink: Yup, sometimes they can steer you to some songs that will turn out to be gold for their crowd of friends and family, that is if they are in tune to their friends and family.

We played "Butterfly Kisses" by Bob Carlisle for the Bride-Father Dance. Yeah, it's an okay standard...etc, etc. However, yesterday's wedding was different in that by the end of the tune, we had a floor packed with father-daughter couples. We'd never seen that before...got some great pictures. :)

Funny you should mention that as that was the tune (and we haven't used it in quite a long time) that the Bride and her Dad danced to on Saturday.....and then later it was requested again, but for the second go-around I used the Jeff Carson version which is a bit shorter and a bit less sappier.....:sqbiggrin:

Didn't have a crowd on the floor for the Father daughter dance as the Bride just wanted it to be her and dad, but did for the second time around.

Now the Groom didn't want to be out on the floor the whole song (Song For Mama - Boyz 2 Men) all alone, so we had all the Mothers and Sons come up after about a minute or so to help him "hide" on the dancefloor....:sqwink:
 
Part of my music selection process for the B&G is to ask them if there are any idividuals in particular I should be sure to NOT accept requests from - They all have them.

All the brides have that one-shall we say-"single party girl" friend who like to dirty-dance to the latest club stuff, and all the grooms have the likewise single college buddy (be they 25 or 45) who requests something innappropriate.

One couple told me just not to take any requests from the "6'9" groomsman." Sure nough, he was a TALL mo-fo, and When he came up to place his first request of the night, I knew exactly who it was and why!:sqcool:

I'm a big fan of combining these two into a single "Parent Dance" when it fits the couple. Usually there isn't an issue, and I don't lobby for it at all - I just go in assuming they'll want separate selections unless they specify otherwise.

But if their mood is right (ie they don't particularly care for the "formalities"), or time constraints abound, or if you can tell there is just general awkwardness in the family situation/makeup/politics, I will suggest the combined dance as an alternative to make it shorter and get it out of the way, and they jump all over it.
 
There was a request for song I never played in a dance set. What the hell, that song packed the floor and they sang with the music. That song was "Build Me Up Buttercup".
 
Kirby no many how many weddings you do no 2x (two) are the same

so that isnt unusual to me...
