Software For Caveman DJ Thawed From Ice

Hey,

I've read a bunch of posts on DJ software here, but wanted to get some advice for my specific situation. My dad used to be a mobile DJ and has some interest in getting back into it. However, he likes the smaller systems guys are using now and how they can do it all on a laptop without lugging records around (he never transitioned to CD and still buys new vinyl). He uses a computer occasionally to check email and that is about it. I got him a small PA system, but now he needs something to play from other than his turntables.

My sister has an old Compaq laptop (Pentium?) running XP she that doesn't use. I'm looking to wipe it clean, reinstall XP or linux, buy him some mp3 collections and/ or rip some of his vinyl, and install some software for him to dj with. Basically, the only features he needs are the ability to put easily put songs in queue from a library and a manual realtime crossfade like on his dj mixer. The simpler the interface, the better. And, I'm hoping to find something open source for free is possible. If he starts actually doing some gigs, I can transition him over to Rockit or something (yes, I know I could just start him off on this). If I could find an iTunes plugin for manual realtime crossfade, that is really all I would need...

Actually, I see where WinAmp offers some crossfade plugins. This One seems to crossfade in realtime. Again, any suggestions or alternatives are more than welcome.

I'm hoping WinAmp would be simple enough to use. I never have, but it looks to be along the lines of iTunes.

Check out Virtual DJ. It has a free home version that might be enough for him. I used it for a while and then ended up upgrading to the full version. I also run it on a laptop running windows xp.

For a Caveman coming back from retirement and wanting to go digital the correct selection would be Rockit. VDJ is great but may be a tad complicated or have stuff you don't need.

If I could afford to give kickbacks, I would have bought an island farther south, and be hanging out with Richard Branson... :D

They do, on the other hand, get to read many of my semi-insane, late night posts regarding life, humanity, the number 42, and what the heck the mice had to do with a bulldozer (all of which gets channeled into my software somehow)...

Rick's one of the good guys, and the program works well. I'm glad to call him a friend. Try it for the Caveman. When he gets good and thawed out make sure to play Jimmy Castor's song "Troglodyte" for him.
