So how would YOU uplight this one?

Oh fudge, this is where I'm working this weekend. Private residence. When they said "in a barn" I envisioned at least having concrete on the floor. Client tells me I'll be setting up "to the right". I'm to provide uplighting as well. 200+ guests. Here's my package:

20 led cans (cheaplights studs & blazers and 4 chauvet slimpar56)
cake pin-spot
2 blisslight bl-15

The only thing I can think of is to just scatter the cans along the wallspace then make sure it's REALLY dark besides that. Man, I hate the notion of all that dust that I'm going to have to clean out of my gear. So, all whining aside, how would YOU uplight it?

I'd go with uplights where the support posts are. Focusing on the ones that specifically support the trussing.

My thought on uplighting is that it should accent and compliment the room's features. Yes it's a barn, but use that aspect to your advantage with the uplighting.
 
Rick, go to the $0.99 store and get some tupperware type bowl, that fits the par cans.

You can drill the bottom and put a screw/washer/nut to hold the par can and black spray paint. You can also cut into the side for the power/DMX cables. This will keep the light close to the ground to cover most of the wall. And if you ever have to do another event in a barn or similar environment you already have everything ready to go.
 
Ricky, I'm sorry to say this, but this one required a pre-event visit. Any time you have a function at a private residence that you've never been to before, it's a must.

If it truly a dirt and dust flooring, that alone may have been enough to turn it down for me.

Is the barn wired with electricity or are they just going to hand you an extension cord ans say "Go for it!". I shudder at the cost and time it will take to clean out all the equipment afterwards. Another thing to consider is the rattling of the metal or whatever the construction material may be. Nothing to absorb the music so everything will be reflected. That place is big enough for you to have a speaker setup in each corner. You can always run speaker wires along the ceiling beams.

I don't see it as a problem. Fortunately the new LED lights reduce power problems drastically. However the venues or places where the event takes place is the deciding factor. So you need to get all the information available, before giving a quote or providing the uplighting service so you can provide it at places where you are comfortable and not getting yourself in trouble.

I'm with SVO on this. Every issue in this discussion is manageable and "fixable," and without any grand intelligence...but those solutions are damn near impossible to fully, properly and proficiently implement without a physical site visit/evaluation AND a trusting, dependable, honest relationship wit the client.
 
The last wedding I did in a barn had no dance floor. The guests danced in the dirt - dust everywhere. It took hours to blow the dust off the amps, and clean the cables and mixer.

Post some pictures for us when it is lite up?

I did a barn party a few years ago. When I arrived they were "raking" the hay off the ground for the event. They put the bales of hay in the field next door until the following day. LOL

That barn is a metal barn that was built in recent years on the grounds. Should be a gorgeous place to have a wedding.
