Security at your House??

Something I considered when I moved my gear out of the house and into storage (which I primarily did cause I was tired of hauling up and down the damn stairs, haha), the perps coming to break in aren't gonna know you've moved the gear out. All they know is that they are hitting a DJs house.

I dont have any faith in cameras
they dont do anything to PREVENT the crime
a video record of the person who MURDERED you isn't very useful

a deterrent is your best bet

Mike, preventing a crime is near impossible. There are bad people that do bad things and have no fear. However, would you want a murderer to get away without something tangible to go on?

Cameras help solve crimes everyday.

Oh just taking to my Mate he is a shotfire (as I am, and can also transposrt dangerous goods, but you need licences)

anyway he told me he moved to a new house and it seemed quiet then trouble set in
so he told me he put a sign up out the front that reads....

"CAUTION" SHOT FIRE INSIDE HOUSE
(shotfire: if you dont know, we BLOW things UP) [smaller writting]
IF YOU SEE ME RUNNING FROM HOUSE, IN PANIC
TRY AND GET IN FRONT OF ME, AT ALL COSTS

he wants to rig a set of 5x or 6x Detonator caps in the front yard in certain places
so when he sets it of they go in 30 seconds after he is out the front.....

now that I thought YES, I want one....
so I am going to a sign writer and have a small one made up!!

that should keep them out

I can't discuss my security details. Too much work having to look for those that have read my post and taking care of witnesses. :tricool:

I have great neighbors they tell me anything that goes on. In fact a friend put a "house for sell by owner sign" in my yard with cell phone number while on vacation as a prank. My neighbor removed it and called me. Friend has also put my truck up for sell. $11,000 truck asking $500 O.B.O. Other neighbor called asking to buy for $100 then removed the sign.

Also security system with the sign helps.

While the gun thing is macho and cool -- without an early warning system in place, they are worthless... ;)

Without a good overall security plan and system in place to give you a heads up -- odds are that you will never get to your weapon in time, or worse, the bad guy will get it before you do...

You have to have time to evaluate the potential threat, prior to picking up a weapon to react. In many cases there are children in the house, so your weapon is locked up (or should be).

Cops, military and security personnel train regularly to react as quickly as possible -- even they get dead on occasion. Most homeowners are not prepared -- they get dead quicker, usually by their own weapon...

A good security system, cameras, et. al., will give you a fighting chance if the bad guys come.

trust me, I'm not that silly that I do not understand their value....
I was only commenting that "an ounce of prevention".....
sure, if you have a way to let the perps KNOW they are being taped...
THAT can deter them.

besides, a camera solving a crime is no good to me...
if I am already dead.

I just want to have one of these guys standing out the front all day!!

Yes, the APX system. The entire house (windows, doors, garage door, etc) are all connected. Alarm gets tripped, APX is contacted, if I don't respond with password immediately, the police are on their way in minutes.

It works well, I have accidently set it off & had the police at my door within about 10 minutes.

Guns are good, Alarms are better, Cameras better still. People knowing that the house is surveiled will generally cause them to move on. Dead bolts are useless unless they are double cylinder with a key on each side.

Many people have a front door with a window in it or near it on the side. If you rely on a standard deadbolt, your dead. I break the glass, open the lock & in I go.

The best defense is a plan. If you want to be safe from attack, you have to think in terms of slowing them down. every second counts. Especially at night when they are awake & your sleeping.

Having an alarm system & signs everywhere with cameras will discourage the majority of common theives. If they choose to cross that line into your house, you should be ready to kill them because that is likely what they will be ready to do to you.

My alarm system also ties into the house lights so when it's tripped the lights go on outside, & in the major living areas. This also make it easier to see who your shooting.

Interesting you mention that Drax -- my house has old doors for outside access, with large windows. I found a company in Canada that makes window bars just for this purpose, and outfitted all the doors with them.

The bars are very close together, and very strong (carriage bolted through the door) -- I also put steel grating where the locks are, so somebody with long fingers or a tool couldn't reach through said bars if they broke the glass...

If they really, really wanted to get in, they could -- but it's gonna take a bit of time, and a lot of noise.

There's a lot of work involved in doing this stuff right, so you have some sort of peace of mind...

Just don't leave the key in the lock on the inside.....

2 of my 3 exterior doors have glass in them, so I use the double cylinder locks. I keep a key hanging on a nail out of sight and out of reach from the outside, but easy for me to grab if I need to get out in a hurry. (fire, etc)

A bit... ;)

The biggest problem I've seen in many security setups, is the response issue. If the cops can't get there to check it out within a couple minutes, it becomes a complete waste of money - as your stuff will be gone, or you will be dead!

Cameras are great if there's somebody available to watch them, or you actually have them set to record 24x7. Alarm systems go off falsely so many times, that many folks have come to ignore them.

I've literally got 10's of thousands of dollars in security into my place, but I consider my dog to be my best security asset. ;)

BTW, never, under any circumstances, go outside to confront someone who's on your property -- do it from an upstairs window. Have a phone in one hand, and a weapon nearby if possible. Nefarious people want to catch you off your guard -- don't give them that opportunity...

Agreed on all counts, plus I'm kinda good security unto myself..

I would like to add: Never, and I mean NEVER, display one of those signs saying "Protected by (Name?) Security Systems" or some such. What you then doing is telling a pro how to bypass it.

As an EE, I have designed and installed my own security safeguards, which include some more agressive defenses. While some may warn of legal problems, allow me to quote an old Martial Arts/fighters' axiom: "Better Jurors Than Pallbearers". I might also add, after a tripping of one of said safeguards, that the court decided that the home invader kind of stepped in his own doo-doo. BTW- the more aggressive safeguards are on and in the house proper, not on the outside property.

Also, keep in mind that you can be sure that any commercial security system, like a commercial anti-virus, has already been beaten, and that knowledge is widespread among those who use it.

If your security system isn't connected to a wired line, it is impossible for them to disconnect the alarm to the monitoring station.

I disagree on the yard sign. It has kept our house safe while the neighbor's was broken into. The more things that tell them this is a secure location with monitoring, cameras etc. the more likely they are to just move on to the next house that looks unprotected. UNLESS they are specifically targeting you, they will move on to houses that don't have signs & surveilence as it's simply a choice for them of working to defeat an alarm or move to one without it.
