Apparently this came out two years ago, but I was searching on eBay and came by this light. I am surprised this isn't more popular among DJs. A Battery powered wireless Derby Effect. This is what the lighting effect companies should be coming out with. No wires will mean a clean set up for DJs. I wonder why ADJ, Eliminator, and Chauvet are not coming out with battery powered light effects yet?

This sells for $159.95 on eBay. Video says it has up to 8 hours of battery life, and it comes with a remote.

Rockville is not a brand I would stake my reputation upon. Best for home users and holiday fare. In 24 months or less you'll be buying a new one.

The "derby" is also a pretty dated effect, like moon flowers and mirrored balls.

Dated yes, but you could argue almost all effects are dated. The tech changes, and we have LED, and brighter effects now that use a reduced power consumption. Biggest changes. Perhaps motors have become faster for moving effects. Most popular effects were introduced into the market 30+ years ago.

MOST people won't care if the effect is dated or not. Just that it is fun, and looks cool and helps elevate the experience on the dance floor. ALL kids and teenagers, and even young adults love any kind of lighting effects. The problem/issue effects are STROBES. I get the "No Strobes of any kind" requirement far more often in recent years due to a single person attending or older person attending who can't handle it. I have even had some color strobing from my Venue mothership light at a wedding and have been asked to turn that effect off because someone there was too sensitive to it. ..It wasn't a strobe light bright flash, just colors that strobed for a few seconds in a program cycle.

Mini Kinta, Derby, Moon Flowers. Can all be fun and fine at parties today just as they were 15, 20, 30 years ago.

Another issue effect are laser effects, but to a much lower extent compared to strobe lights. I personally like lasers, but I know they present problems for photos, so I try not to use any until later in the dancing portion of the night when the photographer has gotten plenty of pictures of dancing, or the photographer has already left.

I have the Eliminator Color Wash which is the same version of that light, but without wireless DMX and it's not battery powered. Man that light is a heavy light. I have to tighten the clamp down HARD to get it to stay put on my speaker pole. Love the light, nice and bright, and covers a whole large dance floor, but wish the clamp was easier to tighten up and untighten.

I am surprised to see that the Both lighting battery powered version is only 9.5 lbs. That is impressive with a battery inside.

What you are describing is the thing most of us would simply use at no charge when appropriate.

Teen dances could often use some lighting because they might be locally small, short, and inexpensive social events. I would typically use something for my own benefit as a performer rather than pretending it's some kind of 'up-sell" and the cheap DJ stuff fits that application quite well. If the space doesn't need it - I don't use it. There's no "value" to be concerned about one way or the other,

My current dance floor lighting is a pair Eliminator Mega wash's, fantastic light, and bright, I don't have them at full brightness either. I bought a pair of wireless DMX dongles on Amazon to make them wireless, I am using a pair of won't last longer than 24 months Rockville speaker/lighting stand( the single pole) . You are right, they are on the heavy side, with the stands, its just a single bolt throgh the bracket on the light, no issues getting them tight.

I got them probably 6 months before Both released the Spider, if I had waited I would have gone with the Spiders, not much difference in price.
