Rock Band Parties

I think it's a lame idea... I've posted this same post several times over the last 2 years, but I'll do it again...

We tried the whole guitar hero / and rock band thing... I did it with 2 12' screens, and a full JBL SRX system with 4 18" subs , 2 dual 15" tops, and about 16,000 watts of power as well as moving head lights, LED's, and all that... I mean big time....

It didn't fly worth a crap.. Girls were still coming up all night saying "this is so ****in' lame.... can you play some music we can dance to?""

Several reasons why it doesn't work......

The idea is about 1 1/2 years too late... everywhere here in Atlanta at least has already tried it, and summarily scrapped it. If you're just hearing about this now, sorry, but we were playing rock band in the bar christmas 07'... it's not that it's not a cool idea, it's just an old, outdated, and proven failure for bars...

It's too repetitive... the patrons there don't want to keep hearing the same song over and over...

For rock band, one lame ass ruins it for everyone else... so if everyone's not in sync, it sounds like ass...

Everyone owns a PS2 or XBOX... the bar will pay you for two weeks, when the initial gee whiz burns out (usually about 2-3 weeks), they'll then decide to save money, and they'll continue without you for another 2 or 3 weeks, until everyone in the bar finally complains enough that they drop it.

It doesn't involve enough people... interest is lost very quickly...

The people who are into the video games are usually either under age, or don't drink... the video game demographic is not known for being big spenders... (this information is based on years of having done madden tournaments, dance dance revolution, Guitar hero, Rock band, and others...)

I'm just saying, I have yet to see a single individual do well with this...

it definitely doesn't have the potential to take over karaoke, as I rarely see it last more than a few weeks..

people can stay home and listen to their kids or little brother play that all week... no one wants to hear that at the bar....

now it's a great add on for bar mitzvah, kids parties, and even corporate parties... but not as the main entertainment...

I will have to say that I agree in some ways and disagree in others.

I do see the potential (in this area) that something along these lines could takeover karaoke in some bars.

I also see your point and agree that this could be a short-lived venture.

I guess personally, my company isn't out much if it doesn't last for longer that a month or so, because the income from the gigs I will perform in that time frame shall easily pay for the extra equipment I will have to purchase to accommodate my current system.

Then, with that being said if it does fizzle out early, I will have made the money I needed to purchase equipment I was wanting to buy anyhow.....

oh, yeah, I hear ya.... if you get enough to buy the gear, no harm, no foul...

and btw.. I didn't mean that you were lame...lol.....

LOL, I appreciate the clarification! :sqwink: Although certain people would probably say that!
I guess what I really am trying to say is that I have had several bar owners approach me about this, and I am willing to go out on a limb and see if it works. This venture is being entered into with a friend of mine, and I am hoping that with our combined effort, connections, level of talent in different areas, and enthusiasm, we can pull this off successfully!

I don't know... are you? Why not both? Maybe we need to think of ourselves more as entertainers than DJ's... especially with the rise of cheap music equipment and / or DJs.....

Slightly different to be sure, but I do kids bubble parties.... I do them well, adn I do a lot of them. Yet, to increase my possible revenue, I have added parachute games to my offerings. I also have ordered a few books from amazon on kids games for outdoors...

Think BIG PICTURE...... Think $$$. Think outside the box.

Papa, I completely understand what angle your coming from, your the versatile all in one entertainer. I prefer DJing insted of having to worry about all of that. Sure I'll do kids parties with games, hula-hoop contests, the whole shabang, but I personally like to invest my revenue into my DJ show, to make it amazing and make keeping people dancing and having fun during my show my number one priority. For example, a bar mitzvah requires 100% attention to the dance floor all the time. If I had a rockband system running, i wouldn't be able to focus 100% of my energy on my number one goal, which is putting on a good DJ show. Of course you can get into hiring extra help and putting on a multi-person show to include extras like that, but eh... for now I'm happy where I'm at DJing, and being the best DJ I can be.

I was thinking the exact same thing Steve, but you said it much better. My feeling is this is something that has passed...still popular at home but not in the bars.

I agree with Steve Lynch. A local bar was having a karaoke night on Wednesday and a Guitar Hero night on Tuesday. The crowd was big on Wednesday but not so big on Tuesday. They switched nights. Guess what? So did the crowd. It wasn't the night that was the draw, it was the karaoke. They have since dropped the Guitar Hero night.

As to what we are supposed to do in bars; simply put, keep the crowd thirsty. If they're dancing then they're getting thirsty.

Money spent

Right now I think when its all said in done to start we will have maybe 500 into it?? So 2 shows and its all paid for...just a thought and not to mention the fact I have spent money in worse ways!!!

Matt you have dial up and gain TV from an antenna (No high speed nor cable TV or Dish) You probably have an outhouse out back. I wouldnt expect you to own such modern technology.

how would you advertise this?

As Steve mentioned, word of mouth is going to hopefully get us off the ground after a few trials in some smaller bars. With my DJ business I have never advertised, everything has been done through references and I really like it that way. I guess to me it means I am doing a good job for my clients.
