How would you feel about becoming the largest DJ company in you market?

Or at least the one with the best equipment?

I'm at a dilemma of deciding too expand and take on a few nice contacts, and with that possibly take over the prom market or just stay my humble olé self.

I'm with an investor that is about willing to give me anything I want ( which could mean huge sales for Ben) but I don't know if this is a good idea.

I'm very lost and there really isn't anyone that can help me but myself. I love the opportunity but I just don't know if it's a good idea.

I know i can provide a very nice life for my family at the rate I'm going now. Expanding can be putting me to the next level but I really don't know if that's a good idea.

All tell.
Would you let someone work for you if the only reason being they gave you $100K. They have no experience, they are eagar to learn, but just want to have fun.

I'm so ready to hide under a rock.

I guess it would depend Cam...

Would you still be working out in the field like you are now?? or would you be
the office guy???

I'm also getting to the point where i could easily add another system, and keep it busy....So i too kinda have the same dilema as you...

I would like to do it also, But i really don't know if it's a good thing either

Cam,

Look at the investor as an opportunity to teach. Yes, they may have no experience and are eager to learn, and that is a great thing, but you could be the one to show them that having fun and working do not necessarily have to be to different things. We can all have fun while being responsible in the job you do.

Yes, expanding means greater responsibility. It would mean more time away from the family (don't kid yourself into thinking otherwise) and more work, but in the long run, it would mean you would be happier I think.

Can't speak for you exactly, but I think you have the type of personality that is looking for new challenges, and this is it!

Wow, I guess I better try and get a little sleep and put together the information I have for this guy. I'm 50 / 50 if he is truely honest or blowing smoke up my ass. I guess I will see at lunch tomarrow.

What's the rest of the story? 100K just to play DJ? Somethings missing here... on the surface it sounds like a keen idea... but, may need to scratch below the surface and see what lurks there to bite ya in the ass.....

If it's all on the up and up and you feel well suited to take on the task then go for it!

No the money is to purchace a large scare lighting and sound system to hadle prom, school dances, bands and other larger scale events.

If it would happen a Dynacord Cobra system would be my fist choice.

Then again with my luck nothing will happen and I will look like an idiot. I guess I should have keepen my mouth shut until it would really happen.

lol I seen it all - worked within dj companies that got too big and went bust

most locally would only have a max of say 10x djs

I went and bought trebleclef when I had 8x guys
slowly over 15x years I downsized with the way the economy had been going

now its myself and one other Dj that i send out when I cant do the jobs myself

most local comanies are as I said above max of 10x some have been up to 30x or even more and just went bang in the end

so yeah seen it all i'll let the young guys go for it when they get too big there is only one other way they will go and very fast as I have seen it

just gradually build up dont get too big or your find out with a chapter 11 as you call it and we call Bankruptcy...

Reasons I would not do this:

1. I worked hard to be able to control my own fate. I am not going to put it back into someone else's hands.

2. Growth means more work, which means more hours away from my family. This is another thing I worked hard to get back by working for myself.

3. More money is great to have. However, most of us that get more money tend to end up with the same financial woes we have now. When you have more, you spend more (unless you're crazy disciplined). You may have a few more luxuries, but are they anything you're truly missing in your life?

It really boils down to what's important for you and your family. We all have risk and sacrifice. The question is how much of each are you willing to give?

Not a problem with either.

Willing to do it only through a private invester who wants to be active in the business? Not on my life. I believe the bible says something about a debtor being a slave to someone? I will not put myself in that position with a person; we used a bank who approved our business loan on its merits, not on another persons whim and desire to be involved. I *might* (a big might) consider a private investor if they had no interest in being involved in the company.

Take a look at all the pros and cons of each and decide

Ben says yes. Kat says if it's going to make Ben happy and get him off my back for awhile then definitely yes.

I say, good for you but only you can make that call. I would like to expand but finding competent DJ's is hard to come by.

Good luck to you.:sqwink:

All have made awesome points, but I'm with Dennis in a big way - companies that try to grow that rapidly are unavoidably going to have a surge in their overhead that is disproportionate to their ability to sustain it.

If you do try to expand like you are saying there are all sorts of things that will creep in... ESPECIALLY if you are going to get into a system that can handle "bands." (a TRUE live-sound system for live sound reinforcement is a different beast alogether than a dj system of ANY size, and $100,000 won't actually go as far as you would think in a pro-level live-reinforcement system if all things are being properly considered.)

With all that equipment comes the need for a place to store it, a way to transport it, someone to help set it up, and if you do go into live sound reinforcement for bands, someone to run it. A dj isnt going to be able to do justice to "real" live sound reinforcement without a SERIOUS learning curve.

There could be potential in small-to-medium sized systems I suppose that you rent out to garage bands and small local bands, but then you have the headaches and continual expenses that go into rental business.

Just take the decision slow, think it through, and be smart... You'll end up fine!

If the offer was presented to me I would jump on it. I currently have 2 systems with a third one on the way. I love gear. My gear would be left out of the loop for the deal though.

I have a local Multi Op in NJ I would love to partner up with. This company makes a crap load of money and they are very well established. The main guy just strikes me as a weasel that would leave you hanging out to dry if things did not go right.

Have a lawyer review the business plan and use your best judgment.

You have got to be kidding me!!! This has to be a joke. Let me first say I like Cam I even consider him one of my friends and he's a good dude that works hard and has a good Karaoke show. But he's so full of S--T. If you wanna make up your own little world do it where no one knows you! Even if he had a half million he still would be even close to the biggest entertainment company in Pittsburgh.

I wish I could DJ Proms. It would be so much fun. I have done a few small ones. Here no school wants to spend more than $500 on a DJ for a Prom.

I have even tired to educate them. I did 2 Proms about 2 years ago and I said I would do it for the price of $500 and after I showed them a good time the Price would be normal the next year. When They called back for the next year and I told them $1000, they said I was great but they don't want to spend that much money.

Tickets are $100 to $120 a couple I feel $5 a person should go to entertainment. Meaing the average school would be $1000 to $1500 here as the average prom is 200 - 300 people.

So I ask you this if he can't sell a prom for more than $500 Is he planning on taking over the market by doing $500 proms with his 100k system. I haven't met a DJ that doesn't exaggerate but come on. This isn't a personal attack its just the truth.

I just took this exact same leap of faith. I have an investor that gave me wads of money to upgrade and is booking weddings and splitting the big gigs. He had no true DJ experience but is learning quickly. He has already booked 6-7 weddings and continues to come along to every event I do. Here was how I did it. He is basically a 50/50 partner...but doesn't touch anything I do solo (weddings). The relationship is also on a 5 year contract at which time either of us can walk - no questions. It's been hard figuring out percentages when I work so much more than he does right now, but it's great having another person helping with marketing, loading, and paying the bills!!!

Good luck :sqwink:

hey atleast he has a website. When was the post made that you are quoting and are you sure you know whats in the works here? I think only Cam can go down in flames on this or rise to the top, but you my friend are just a bystander. In his old quote he mentioned doing a couple gigs a few years back at an intro price. Perhaps things are different now. Saying someone is full of excrement is a bit abrasive especially if you are a real friend.

lol I'm not getting in a pissing matching with you. I'm just saying I don't believe it to be truth I hope he can prove me wrong I wish no one anything but success but until he does, I call bulls--t. And for the record a website doesn't make you a good DJ. And also I never said that Cam is not a good DJ or that he couldn't make it, in fact he got one of my nights at a bar because the owner thought that his karaoke show would bring in more business than me dj.ing. Cam does very well for himself I just don't believe that someone is going to invest a 100k into a business that makes 10-20% that in profit a year it economics 101 is all. I wish him nothing but the best and I will work on that website... I was wondering why I get no business LOL.

Nar Dee Nee my friend has hit the jackpot.

okay Chris lets clarify my comment about the web site. I have never seen any of your wares and having seen Cams I atleast know he isnt Bull ****. Not claiming he will be successful but as a friend I wish him the best and certainly wont cry bull**** or call him a joke. your busy status or lack there of really makes no difference to me.`Im curious as to why you felt the need to call a supposed friend out on this forum. Pissing is for the weak.
