Brother Cam,
You and your compadres know your market better than anyone. Only you can determine with any semblance of accuracy if a large, sudden growth will be financially responsible.
I can't speak for the rest, obviously... but my thoughts on aquisition of new business equipment are thus: DJs love to call it "toys", we in the collective enjoy buying new equipment etc. But remember, this is business. You don't simply buy new equipment just for the bragging rights. In truth, you're investing profit back into your business. There has to be a return on that investment.
We've been running the same Carvin passive FOH rig for years. It has a fine tone and has paid for itself many times over. I've seen 'em come and I've seen 'em go... the Eons, the L1... and now Dynacord is the cat's pajamas. For you guys who feel like you've just got to rush out and buy it, good for you. For our part, our nine-year-old FOH is making money for us and giving good satisfaction. The decision to invest in it was made after many months of research and reading reviews. It was
not an impulse buy... and it wasn't all purchased at one fell swoop. It was planned and purchased over time. That research and planning paid off. We don't
need to replace it. Not one of the "must-haves", before or hence is a necessary expenditure for us.
The purchase of business equipment is a necessary evil when growing your business. So are hiring and training employees and the additional expenses and time that come with it. So you want to squeeze as much return from your investments as you possibly can. Taking a loss on resale of an L1 set is not a good return on your investment, sorry. If it's only been loaded out for five shows, did it really make a profit for you?
Oh wait... a bunch of people said the L1 was the latest and greatest. It slices, it dices. So let's all fork over a lot of money for a little line array rig with the Bose logo on it. Why, customers will be beating down yer door, just because your rig has a Bose logo.
A 100 grand shot in the arm overnight won't suddenly increase your gross receipts overnight. And if this partner or investor thinks otherwise, you're in line to get a royal dicking. So please, think this through.
