...there are tidbits of valuable information in the book. But, because of his character, I' won't be learning any of it from HIS book. The information has NEVER been an issue with me. I simply refuse to line his pockets with my money.

If you want to make yourself a better entertainer, spend 8 bucks and buy my DMX book. Then, if you want my certificate of completion and testimonial that you're a first rate DMX light technician, with a certificate to prove it (with a gold embossed seal) , that'll cost you $69.95. Take your pick.

Hey! You charged me $10...... though I did get $8 of info from it! :sqwink: So, can I get the certificate for $67.95?

On the aspect of part time...

Most of you know I work full time for Playtex Products in Dover. This plant makes the Gentle Glide and Sport brands as well as the infant care line.

Booked a bride a few months ago. As we chatted on the phone we learned that we both worked at the Playtex plant. She and her fiancee are on 3rd shift, I work 2nd shift. She's in Pack, her fiancee and I are in Forming.

Graveyard was in early for a meeting one night and we finalized the deal before the meeting. She paid in cash and I wrote her up a receipt right there on the production floor where my tool cabinet was parked.

I see 'em both on occasion during the changing of the guard. We BS around for a few. They're two of the sweetest people one could care to meet. :)

Now if this isn't half-assed, part time DJ company professionalism, I don't know what is. :D

Are there any prerequisites to join the DMX Director Guild? Do you need video of us doing electrical work? Do we need to submit video footage or pics of us getting electrocuted? If we are killed in said electrocution can we get a refund so we may pay the funeral ? ;)

Fine, I'll do this without the quotes.

We're all starting to argue about semantics here but I will not back down from my statement and I'm sure no one else will.

It's obvious that seemingly no one can take my question/challenge at face value and answer the question. Kirby you attempted to but it was back to square one if I'm reading you correctly. So you DO feel there is something to be gained from the book...maybe $25 worth but you're not willing to spend the money. Ok...not willing because it's Peter Merry and that's exactly what I'm trying to get you to NOT focus on. If the goddamn book was written by anyone else, then maybe folks could see the forest for the trees...

I give up...............

Kevin did you ever take in to consideration that the type of client that book is geared toward isnt the type of client most of us are marketing toward. A good portion of the weddings I play arent a total budget of $5000 let alone the entertainment budget being that much. Ive done $100,000 weddings and Ive done weddings where I cost more than the dress and flowers combined (and Im not that expensive). If I focused on only high end weddings in my market I would starve to death because simply there just arent that many here

The fact remains that Mr Merry did write the book and the fact also remains the Mr Merry has collectivly kicked all of us that dont meet his standards (which incidently he dosent meet either) in the balls

I have requested the book at the local Library now im waiting to see if they get it. I will read it. I will get something out of it that I will use im sure. But as far as paying for it I dont do business with people that wouldnt do business with me

I think I see the forest......

Good Lord, find out what your customers want and provide it for them at a fair market price for both parties.

This entire debate could have begun and ended right there.

I believe that I was pretty clear in what I wrote every time. You want to reinterpret it to fit your own opinion..that's fine. That's your right.

Bottom line.

I'll read the book if it's on the library shelves.

Uh Oh, Peter Merry is in trouble now...

Yup! My wife read the section from his book about p/t vs. f/t and pricing. She's angry and is writing him a letter...

Just found this thread and damn I've quoted! A first I think!

I used one of the ideas from the book last night...releasing tables through the buffett using songs assigned to the tables. Worked great.
The book has it's place, right next to the toilet in my house.

In our home, that happens to be a place of honor....currently "The Video Hound Golden Movie Retriever" (1,400 pages) is the book which inhabits the place next to the throne.

Only a very top reference material would get prime placement as throne reading.

Kudos to PM.....I think he's crafted a fine literary reference book.

Its re-sale value is PRICELESS, because every person I know who's bought the book, is willing to part with it.

Looks like PM has a best-seller on his hands!!!

(And since I'm full time DJ who works part time......I love the controversy!)

I was at The Best Wedding Reception Ever website to get my copy of the bonus materials the other day. It has an e-mail address to send your request to if you own the book. Well, I e-mailed my request. Still no replies. I wonder if Peter knows it is me.

Also, I went to the Wedding Entertainment director site he specified in the book and all that is there is a link to the book site, a link to Peter's site (hmmmm, me thinks I smell a rat), some links bashing the "average" DJ and bands, and a blurred image of something.

Kind of makes me wonder...

Does Peter really have a definition for Wedding Entertainmnet Director is this all just BS to get nationwide attention to Merry Weddings?

Hmmm Im not going to look for it to prove it but I posted the same thing about 2 or 3 months ago somewhere

Does he need one?

I mean, his plan should be obvious. He wants to market himself as an authority figure on weddings. It's a popular advertising approach. Being "published" is a necessary part of that approach.

Many people do this locally through magazines, radio, and cable television, or regional publications. They may even produce their own series of informational materials.

You also find many new versions of this type of marketing on the web also.

Two things stand out about Peter's application of this standard fare selling technique:

1. His target area: DJs are typicaly local services. But Peter wants an exceptionally high price tag - so he needs an exceptionally large audience. Travel seems to be something he wants to do, and a "public profile" something he desires to craft. The minimum requirement for that is a the authoring of a "book".

2. His hang up: Other DJs. Writing a book for brides is good move - but including your pet peeves about wedding DJs is self sabotage.

The success he really wants won't be realized until he finally makes up his mind. Peter, do you want to be important to Brides or do you want to be important to other DJs? You can't debate two topics with one argument.
