funny aside........yesterday I got a call from an entertainment & talent agency based in Orange County CA.....the caller lives in Ladera Ranch (PM's neighborhood)......and he has NEVER heard of PM....

If you are a PT DJ, giving this to a prospective bride could actually cost you the job. If the brides question your ability to provide excellent entertainment just on the basis of your status it's a loosing situation for any part timer no matter how good you are.

That's what I think tarnishes the book. There is a ton of information for the bride and also for DJ's to improve what they offer which will result in polishing rough areas in your presentation at the wedding.

I don't think bad mouthing part timers is going to accomplish anything except building up more hate in peoples minds. In my field of work a large percentage of people have "elitist" attitudes thinking they are better than everybody. Just sad IMHO.

Bad mouthing others as a means to promote yourself does not work for DJ's, Attorneys, Real Estate Agents, Bankers, Inurance Brokers.....that type of promoting oneself is not accepted by the buying public. When that reference does in the book, is it makes the Good that's there, undeliverable, because of the negativity in the text. It's not neccessary

What really surprises me is this (negative treatment of your competition) is one of the "basics" in Selling philosophy as well advertising philosophy. It's not "Rocket Science" ????:monkeyconfused:

Mark Beecher posted this at ProDJ, and basically it's also my opinion. I hope you don't mind Mark.
"Peter's generalization that "good djs are full time" and "bad djs are part time" is misleading and offensive. To me what is offensive is he is directing that biased propaganda to brides in his book. He is taking advantage of peoples inherent tendancy to categorize people. He knows that even if words are not entirely accurate they will sway a person to his way of thinking. It's sneaky. It's dishonest. It's Peter.

He would make an excellent Television Evangelist"

Simply put, some of the best DJs I know are part time.

If the library system here ever puts it on their shelves, I'll read it. But there is no way I would pay money for it.

Just a biased opinion of a "part-timer."

Cripes Kirby...maybe it's because I have a few drinkypoos in me since I just got home and I'm feeling a little whatever but...c'mon! What is going on with you guys? I give up.....yes...there is ABSOLUTELY NOTHING THAT I CAN LEARN FROM THIS BOOK SINCE THE GUY INSULTED ME WITH THE WHOLE PART TIME REMARK.

Talk about throwing the baby out with the bathwater...I hope more people in MY market think like you Kirby! Awesome!

If PM didnt feed the garbage of PT/FT....I'd buy the book!

I have but no hard feeling against any dj!

There are djs out there who will diss other DJ's to get the job! Is this horrible yes................but whos at the advantage, if you dont feel bad about doing this! Business is business, wether you "sugarcoat" it or not!

I dont bad mouth other DJ's, I state the 100% god given facts on things these djs have done in the past! I dont care if they dont book me, but I still want them to make an "INFORMED" decision on hiring someone "THEY CAN TRUST!!"

I am all about the client, and I will always cover "their" back and help them decide who is right for them! I dont not tell them who to hire, but I certainly dont recomend the DJ services who have s#$T on their clients in the past! EX...not showing up for a wedding because he had a vacation in mexico, another dj got caught stealing from the bar he played at!

I dont feel this is "BAD MOUTHING" them, its presenting the "TRUTH" on helping your client out!

This issues strikes a chord with me, and I am more than glad to offer me two cents.

Most if not all of us are here for our the client! We dont want to hold a gun to our client, and "make" them pick us, we want them to "hire" us, and make "us" part of their "special" event! It makes us all feel good when they say "Are you still open for that date??"

I have only heard this phrase over 15 times, but I love hearing that! After offering suggestions on the bad DJs in our area, I tell them my services, and prices, and let them have a few days to make sure they let it "sink" in on the deal I gave them!

I dont and will never rush any sale, I want my clients to be "more than comfortable" on booking me! Thats how I work!

If I am booked, I recomend the DJ services that I would personally hire, and I tell the clients the DJs repitoirre! Example...this dj from this company has a great personality, very interactive, and will cater to your needs....this dj is fair for their price and they deliver a well balanced show.....

My bad mouthing is simply this...if a dj sucks...this particular dj has a hard time reading a crowd, yea you can get him for $200, and thats fine if that what you want to spend, but I wouldnt recommend his services. But I have facts to back me up! I could care less if the client books with another dj, but I do care if they are looking for the best bang for their buck, and they compromise a wedding on a horrible dj, when they couldve spent another $300 and gotten someone with a better reputation!

Not once, have I ever bad mouthed a dj for his personality....just the services they offer! But is it bad mouthing if I am stating god given facts! I am not biasing dj services, I am just giving proper recomendations.

I am curious as how you guys feel on how I do my business?? I have thought more lately about selling my services, and not comparing to other djs.....but comparing is also an advantage a 60% of the djs suck in my area! Now thats personal opinion! But I dont tell clients that!

But of course, I only speak from being in the biz for a year, so this might not pertain to other djs....I dont know!?!?!?

As far as the book..........the PT/FT thing makes me angry!!!!!! I dont run ft, but I guarantee you I give one of the best dang shows in northwestern minnesota....I would rank myself #2, behind another dj service with 20yrs experience, and 9 set ups! Gonna take a while to catch that one!!!!!!! By the way...hes a FT!!!!!

And hes a great guy, he is djing my wedding next weekend!

So with no PT/Ft thing....anybody can accomplish anything! Although I bet the book has lots of useful info, I prefer to get a general opinion, as on this site...than on a biased book!

But bottom line, congrats to PM....hes filling his pocket.....so without guilt or not........hes putting supper on his table! So congrats for him, I just wish, he'd thought twice before he rambled on to put other djs down in "black and white"

Dj's and ego's are a wonderful thing.:sqembarrassed:

The thought process of "peter said something I don't like, therefore, I won't listen" is undeniably the dumbest thing I have ever heard a dj say in my life.

Do you think the same way about...

Your parents?
Teachers?
Preacher / Pastor?
Friends?
Spouse?
Boss?

There hasn't been one of the above mentioned people that havn't said something to me that I have been upset about and disagreed with.

Just plain ignorant and pathetic.

******************************************

So many are also bitching about him now trying to divide the industry.

Since the late 90's Mark Ferrel has been trying to unite the industry. Stating you are worth more unconditionally.

The "industry" bashed him, called him names, and didn't want to be united.

Now Peter says fine, some are better than others, and comes up with some pretty darn good guidelines that even he can't yet meet.

Now the battle cry is "he tearing us apart." Hogwash.

Make up your friggin mind and decide.

Peter says plain as day.

THE AVERAGE PART TIME DJ...

Are you the average part time dj?

Must be... everyone getting so offended.

I am not "average". That word don't bother me in the least.

No we dont need to divide the industry, but to paint a picture like he did, definitely changes the way I feel about him! Do I hate the guy...HECK NO! He has achieved only what some of us can dream about!

But if your going to talk DJ, and write a book..none the less....you need to say something like of how part timers can deliver an excellent show just as much as a full timers!

I would also like to mention, we are all different, and we will never all agree, but thats the greatest thing that can happen to our business!

I have been making my own trail in the DJ world, and I am doing great! I started all by myself, and I am becoming very popular! Some members on the other site.....kept telling me how wrong I was doing things, and do you think they were wrong...."YUP!!" But they were only trying to watch out for me!

I can only run "my" business the way I see fit. I will take the ups and downs in pride! Isnt it the downs we learn from??

So yea, maybe if we just jumped on one side of the fence or the other on PM, we can finally tear down the fence, and congregate and make our herd stronger??

I totally can see how PM "inadvertantly" divided us djs, but thats only one man right??

So why cant we get over his "mistake" and keep building ourselves as we do on this site??

I'm ready to let this one go! Are you??

Mabye its not the message its the medium?

If the worth movement had a true leader people would listen. Sure there would still be detractors but the majority would fall to logic and come onside

Lets face it Dan if you went to buy a new car and the salesman called you an idiot would you rush to hand him your cash?

Peter has shown very little aside from he is a good salesman....to brides not to most DJs he is certinaly not a leader

DJMN:

Exactly!

I have a question think and be honest...

Do you honestly think that most dj's in your area even..
visit chat boards?
have truly legal music libraries?
go to seminars and trade shows?
have insurance?
want the client to have the best "fit" for a dj, even if they loose the job?
Carry back up equipment?

These are just a few off the top of my head that I know for a fact doesn't happen around here. IMO these are musts just to be in business, let alone "average".

True. I don't agree with everything. but it is a start in the right direction. Untill something "better" comes along. He is the man. Just like Bush. He may be a moron, (ok, Bush is a moron) but he's IS the leader till something (hopefully) better shows up.

heres something to ponder!!!!!!

I bet if we all got together and wrote a book, it would "hit home" to more djs in the real world!!

I'd bet my business on that one!!

Thats the sad truth!!!

I know only 4 out of 7 djs in my area...er...have illegal downloads......I dont go to seminars....2 probably come on forums.......4 have insurance.......2 look out for the best interest of the client!!

So brides dont exactly know all this!...or clients for that matter! Because quite frankly...40% of clients in this area are looking for price!!!!!!!!!!!!!

**40% is a guess** **NOT A STAT** Cuz, i dont bet on stats!! Its that 1% that gets ya!
