Okay, so we're 33 days into our brand new DTV service and it dies. Tech call, resets, etc. A technician is scheduled to come on-site tomorrow. I asked if we were within the cancellation period. Um, no. That only lasts 24 hours. It would cost $468 to cancel the service that doesn't work. ARGH. Fair warning. They suck.

Then you need to demand credit for the time it was down. You should not have to pay for something that is not provided. It does not happen often but every time Comcast is down in my area I get a credit for at least a day's time.

I enjoy watching my Dish-neighbors scraping snow off their dishes every winter.
Canute is right, even my cable company offered a discount when they were down.

I won't touch a dish service. I had Direct when I live in KC, everytime a cloud drifted by the service would go out.

I have cable now. If the service goes out for more than an hour I get a full days credit.

The older systems would blink out in bad weather, pretty frequently. They have improved all aspects of the equipment in recent years. As with anything, you can still get a bad unit (lemon) on occasion. As a subscriber since 1995 (when you still had to PURCHASE the entire set up), I can assure you...they don't "suck". You couldn't pay me to go back to cable.

I found the issue about 10 mins before the service tech got here. There's apparently a 20-volt power supply that's inline with my son's TV, upstairs. For some reason, he had unplugged it, not knowing that it would take down the entire network in the house. Ugh.

Here in Toronto Bell Canada has now offering tv over ip via phone lines. They have come out with this since most rental buildings will not allow dishes on balconies.

If you take it to the regional MGR, you might be able to get it out. We bailed after signing up because they lied to us. They initially refused to let us out but after all the fighting, they finally agreed. We are with Dish now and LOVE it! I'll never ever recommend DirecTV! I have only experienced 2 outages with Dish since last Dec.

Two words Fi Os.

We have wanted FIOS but it's never been available in our area.

Just got rid of DirectTV and went back to cable. ****canned my Verizon DSL for cable internet. 15X the speed up and down on the 'net, full boat TV with all the pay channels. $48/month less than we were paying before. We had finished out our contract with the dish folks, bye-bye!

crappy service because you unplugged part of the system...hmmm...jes sayin :)

No cable where we live. Had DISH for probably 12 years now and had outages I could count on one hand. It's just not that often on a properly installed dish. It takes very very heavy rain or a thick snow buildup. BTW I have knocked snow off my dish twice that I can remember in that time period.

DirecTV in my case had a big problem with storms. Since switching to SkyHD the problems have been reduced 99%.

I spoke with a co-workers this morning who has DirecTV. He said his dish is passive; no power supply needed. Not sure why mine is an active. I like the service, as long as it works but when equipment breaks I have little to no patience.
