One Of The Biggest Problems

Actually, I think that only comes down to who can afford it...

A certificate of insurance, is simply that -- it's a bond. If you've got the cash, you can buy the bond -- it does not mean you will operate in a safe manner.

in fact
the guy who is NOT covered may be more careful with his gear
while the guy WITH insurance has nothing (less) to lose

Mike,
Nobody likes to make a claim on their own Insurance policy whether they are at fault or not. Why? Because it then makes you a statistic. Which means your rates/premiums eventually will go up. It is better to have the other person's (Who is at fault) Insurance pay for the expenses. An Insurance Policy is simply there so YOU don't first have to cough up the money in case of a claim. Someone can sue both YOU and YOUR Insurance Company.

If YOU don't screw up -- it doesn't matter. So, don't screw up :)

Did anyone in the bar notice the bad sound aside from you.....I would be suprised if you said yes and that is the biggest problem they don't learn because they don't have to

The "DJ", Bartender, one other guy and myself were there.
You don't even have to be there to know that( On one side) one brand and Model of powered speaker on one side with a signal coming from a master on a DJ mixer with (One the other side) a Passive speaker powered by one side of an amp that did not have adequate power, (It was clipping from the getgo) with a signal coming from a Zoned, output would sound like crap.NO SUBS.

This is the same club that I use my 4 scoops and it barely makes it. Another chap uses 2 JBL SRX for Bass and two JBL Vertecs for tops. There is no excuse for not offering the public/promoter/client a better product. I do hold the Promoter responsible too.

Someone CAN'T sue your insurance company. Your policy is a contract of indemnity between you and your insurer; it agrees to defend, indemnify in the event of a "covered" loss...

Joe Public isn't a party to the contract; there is no contractual relationship between them and your insurer You get sued, your insurance company defends you, pursuant to the contract.

Canute
my point was only that people without insurance tend to be more fareful
because they are NOT covered.
Like driving his car without being covered.

I have a theory now as to why so Many DJs are going powered speakers and hooking up straight from mixer to Speakers. They don't have a clue as to how to hook up equipment that includes processing etc.

I have every clue and defy you. I get compliments by venues, vendors, clients and YES, other DJs all the time about my sound and my compact system.

Although your knowledge of audio is factual, your theory is bunk and not enough people give a damn.

I sound damn good out there and I have done everything from a VFW hall to a football field without processing.

I am not criticizing your setup Hank. I was generalizing. Even some on here have admitted that they use powered speakers with no processing because they did not know how to hook up amps and other processing. That works for you. The kind of Gigs that I do calls for processors. Try running 4 corded mics, 2 Wireless mikes, a keyboard, a floor monitor and a three way system with separate tweeters & amps, separate midrange and amps and separate bass bins and amps without processing and see how far that will get you.
Can a dentist take a pair of pliers from a hardware store and pull a patient's tooth? Probably! But is that the best tool for the job? Of course not!
All I am saying is that with Laptops, powered speakers etc it just makes it easier for the wrong people to get into this business for the wrong reasons.

I do not believe most DJ's who have gone to a laptop & powered speakers have done so because they are "challeged" on the knowledge of sound reinforcement. I think that in most cases it is because they are embracing the technology that is available to use that makes our chosen profession easier, more compact, less heavy, and in general better sounding. I myself use powered speakers and a laptop program ( yet I do use some processing - a bbe and a gate/limiter/compresser to be specific.) In fact just about all the DJ's I know have a strong working knowledge of sound equipment and their uses. And to a person they all want to provide the best sound possible to their clients.

Then why is it that we get so many people coming on here asking how to hook up a system?
Why do some take one speaker and turn it towards one room/direction and the other speaker facing somewhere else?
Why do they wear their speakers like headphones?
Why do they use "Y" connectors backwards?
The list goes on...............

Because everyone starts somewhere and asking the questions shows they are trying to improve themselves. Houston, you have to realize your way is not the only way, nor necessarily the best way , i'm not saying it's the worst either. Don't knock those new to the business asking the questions because it only shows they respect some of what they've read here and would like the members to help them out. We all know there are guys out there that don't know what they're doing or need help and if their willing to learn and ask for help i see nothing wrong with that. We all started somewhere. I started running Sound in a church when i was in Middle School and now i run concerts for 2-3,000 people and with my own gear. EVERYONE starts somewhere. Just putting things in perspective.

I know everyone has to start somewhere, some are new to the business and some are new to the hobby. A lot of them do not treat DJing as a business, to them it is a Hobby and even then, they don't do it right. There are always going to be exceptions. I know there are hobbyists on here who know what they are doing and then there are some who call it a business and don't know what they are doing.
It pisses me off when they use the excuse that I or others don't need processing etc. Why on earth do I want to sound like just another DJ?

Canute what pisses you off? First of all you offer something long gone with the dinosaurs and Im sure some remaining bones are younger than you and some of that gear. You make it work with processing. Alot of modern gear has buiilt in processing which alleviates one less component in the pile of bones. Why do you have to dislike or get angry that someone does this for fun and at any level of minimal compared to you? These guys arent taking your business but its a good thing I dont live in Houston cause I would. Chill out you act as tho you have to discern minuet details which at times we dont even know enough details and at times even talking down to folks as if your the ruler almighty or their parents. I know you here but if you chastised me in public like you do some here I would tell you to get the H E L L out. You and LeBlanc should meet up sometime for a beer and enjoy a laugh together life is too short. I rail on people true enough but its without any anger whatsoever. Im usually laughiing and my replys are purely for humors sakes in any given situation.

Jon,
I am not angry with anyone. When I come on here and share technical facts with those who I see are doing things incorrect, it is only to help them. I have received several PMs from members who have thanked me for sharing with them that spreading speakers helps improve their sound and coverage. What do you call talking down? The truth? There are too many thin skinned people around who are just looking for a pat on the back.

Some of my equipment may be vintage but it sure does kick azz. If I went to buy a new Cerwin Earthquake now it will still weigh a ton. JBL SRX728s are not light. Regular DJs are afraid of them because they are too heavy. Those were not designed for the average DJ. Processors were not designed for the average user. Manufacturers are always improving things and bringing out new models because it is called sales and marketing. They want you to keep buying. The manufacturers could care less if a thousand wannabees enter the business because it means more sales to them. Why would I want to get rid of something that works? My profit margin is much higher because my investments have paid for themselves many times over.
I do get upset when people try and tell me that what I am using is unnecessary. I run a totally different rig than most and they are very limited as to what kind of gigs they can do. I can offer more to different clients. Am I more aggressive than some? You bet. Am I more assertive than some? Absolutely! Why? Because it gives me the confidence to achieve what I want.

Two words that you hear very often on here and those are "Light" and "Cheap", yep that sickens me. I sometimes feel like I am among boys instead of men.

Use softer kid gloves your experience will be taken a bit softer. Also jut because you see text doesnt reveal the whole picture. Making an educated guess may not be the right choice when you cant see the whole picture.
