New Bose Compact L1 system review

Sarge,
I only heard them in the studio at Bose so I can't say for sure how they will work in a specific situation as you've described. I don't know the venue, seating, etc. But if you think 2 JBL EON 10" G2's would handle that ceremony then using two compact L1's will work great. Of course in my opinion. Even if I have already used them in such a setting it would still be just my opinion, others will have a different view.

As soon as Cap, me, or anyone else who gets them will provide more information once we get them into live settings.

I've used my B52 Matrix 200 in that situation and it was fine.
If that works for you then I'd stick with it. I'm not trying to change you mind on what works for you, I'm just saying I've found something that's 100% better than what I'm using now. I can supply a better quality sound for wedding ceremonies than what I've used in the past. As a benefit, it's lighter and easier to setup. So, for $999 we both win.

I think if you heard this system side by side you'd have a better idea which one would work best. If Bose offers the 45 day return policy then you'd have a perfect opportunity.

On another tread the topic of loss of electricity came up. With a small generator or even a battery powders backup this system can run for hours. With a laptop or mp3 player and a mic you'll have a working system. I like that feature as well. A few years ago I did a wedding on the beach at the Cape. The couple rented the bulky heavey battery powered speaker. It worked great and served their needs. But if I had one of these, that rental fee would have been mine. And the compact L1 is less than half the weight of the other speaker.

honestly you dont need audiophile sound for a ceremony its mostly elevator music and if your single EV speaker doesnt have an issue with feedback its cheaper and does the job just as well as the GOLDEN EGG. A single yamaha as well. I have done it and yes you can hide it in the back or side just the same. Dont claim unchartered territory when its truly not there. Line array is awesome in some instances but in a ceremony it really doesnt have a stick to stand on.

I also ask Ron you make reference to cleaner sound. In reference to what? This being in concerns for a wedding ceremony.

This, I can agree with.

I think Bose is always going to have the power to stir up a debate.
Obviously, I have yet to hear the Compact L1, but I fear I will be less than impressed with sound. I just started working for a company that tends to use the L1 frequently. The more I hear it, the more I dislike the sound.

But it's very aesthetically pleasing and is very light and easy to carry and provides a very fast setup. But for a ceremony and most corporate parties it's all you'd ever need.

For some people I could see it being very handy. I think the it's just one of those things that's not quite for everybody. But, hey, that's how the world works.

I don't see myself picking up any of the Bose stuff anytime soon, but I'll let you know when my back stops working from lugging around my QSCs. :sqlaugh:

yesterdays ceremony effort with a SXA 100 got rave reviews for the quality of sound from the music played (MP3) and a soloist acapella. You would have thought I had a Bose or something however when I was asked what brand of speaker I was using once I told the few who asked they all said gee we usually see those kind of speakers at concerts and live performance no wonder it sounded so nice.

That's great Jon. Then the Bose is definitly not for you. It's true, Bose is not for everyone and everyone likes using different stuff. Some use JBL, while others use QSC, Fender, Community, etc, for their own personal reasons.

So, this thread wasn't to change anyones minds about what equipment is best for them. It wasn't about why Bose has a much more superior sound over JBL, it was about a system I heard. A system that works far better that what I am using right now. I know everyone's uses will vary.

Took the L1 Compact out for it's first job Saturday night. I was setting up in a 2 story very open above the dance floor. Since the L1 model 1s do not project sound up or down just straight ahead I needed so fill upstairs. I setup the L1 Compact in a corner, it completely filled the upstairs area worked great. Some of the bass from down stairs did come up, so the sound upstairs was very full.

Very happy with the purchase, might use it again next weekend. I have a small band plugging their mics into my system they will be using their own amps for the keyboard, and two guitars. Depending on where exactly they setup they might need a little vocal monitor. Guess I would use it with out the extensions for this.

During a wedding ceremony, no one should see you working. You should be set up before the guests arrive and during the ceremony, except for pushing play and controlling the mic levels what do they need to see you do? In fact during the ceremony you should be practically invisible. I have never heard anyone complain that I was getting paid to stand around. As far as the easy and quick setup goes that must means there's less equipment in the way. But my clients are getting an excellent sound experience.

What the bride and groom and their guests should notice is that the music is crystal clear and the vocals can be understood. They don't hear feedback from the mics and they are not starring at two speakers on either side of the bride and groom. The compact L1 has little to no feedback within about 2 feet from the speaker section when at high volume. If the L1 is placed off to the side then there should be no feed back issues. Because of the sound array the L1 can be placed in the back or side of the ceremony area which will keep it out of the way of photos.

I've seen a lot of different ceremony setups where you have the alter area and on either side are two speakers on sticks. That to me is the most ugliest looking setup. Speakers are now in every photo. I understand that not everyone setups their ceremony system like that but with the Bose you won't have to worry. The compact system can be places off to either side and still get plenty of coverage. I can't get that much coverage with my JBL Eon's.

Again, in my last post I said "wedding ceremonies" could be setup in 5 mins. When you work alone and must setup both the reception and ceremony knowing you'll have top quality sound with less setup time is priceless. If you feel guilty then charge your clients less for the ceremony. Since I'm providing high quality sound from Bose it's not about the time as much as it's about the outcome.

Let's not the "speakers on a stick" crap again.
Any DJ that sets up ANY kind of speaker right up front near the bride & groom during the ceremony is an idiot & needs to get a lesson in proper setup.

ok now that I have checked out the Bose compact It especially looks good for a table top unit when you remove the two stick post pieces and connect the speker top right into the box. It looks like a boom box. I might consider it for my ipod. Honestly though I didnt have it for a gig I heard it in the sound room with the Bose rep there demoing it. Its a great monitor and not a whole lot more in my honest opinion. It compares nothing to the L1 and I will continue using my EV's for ceremonies. Those have to be the tiniest transistor radio sized speakers I have ever seen.

Why is the Blame always on the DJ? Won't you think that the wedding Planner/venue/setup person should know better? By the time the DJ arrives to set up he usually does not have much choice because all the rest of the setup is probably already done.
I guess you guys enjoy jumping through other people's hoops! :sqerr:

I agree that the L1 compact does not provide the same coverage that my L1 model 1 or L1 model 2 provides.
However, after using it for a few ceremonies and a few events, I can say in my gig experience, these things do a great job for ceremonies and small parties while providing the ability to set up, tear down, and/or move the equipment in minutes. If those things aren't that important to someone, this is probably not the system for you. Like any system, they are not for everyone and EV's will do just fine.

Not every event we do is a 300 person rocking it out wedding. I just booked a 75 person day wedding reception in someone's back yard. This system will be perfect for that. Another recent booking is a birthday party for 50 people. The compact will be used for that. I did not forsee the compact being being able to do the things it can do when I bought it. I really thought it would be pretty much just a ceremony system. I'm sure we'll be adding another one soon.

The compact provides me with options when the model 1 or model 2 is more than needed.

Im giving my unbiased opinion and though it is interesting it is not the end all that some have portrayed it to be. I could easily do the same with the mini Dynacord system. I have the EV speaks and dont require either.

I can't speak for anyone else but I never said it was the end all. For me it's the best I've use by far for the uses I've put them through. No one's begging anyone to buy them, try them, or fall in love with them. I made my observation about this unit compared to what I already use, and it is by far superior in many ways.

The best anyone can do is to stick (pun intended)with what they are comfortable using. For me the L1 compacts are the perfect addition to my line of equipment. And as only I and everyone else in my area know Bose is the name everyone has heard and remembers as beautiful sound.

Used the L1c as a monitor for a small band that hooked into my system tonight at a reception, they loved the sound, from the 1 L1s, but were beside me and back some so I set the L1c about 10 ft in front of them and pointed it at them, it worked great, well it all worked great till I guess their mixing board developed a problem after about 30 minutes and had no output on one channel and very low and scratchy on the other.

Jon,
If you did buy the dynacord mini system, I think everyone would want your opinion on what they could do. I would. I and a lot of other people here respect your opinion....especially on stuff you use. Hearing what people have to say about equipment they actually use is very helpful. There certainly are a lot of great options for us DJs and I hope that never changes

There is no equipment out there that is the end all. If someone is saying anything is, they are probably losing a lot of credibility. I also don't think that someone should go out and buy equipment if what they have is giving them everything they want already.
