It's a holiday here in NB...so I took the time to intall the crossover in the rack, set it up a bit and hook up the SB2A' s with my 310A's.

Preliminary thoughts....The 310A's will outrun these subs big time...I'm not surprised by that thought. I had to dial them back..

Here's how I have everything dialed....Please chime in if I'm "gaining incorrectly.

WRT my mixer, My goal is to peak at the upper most green, to stay out of the red...The gains on the mixer channel are at 1 pm, the master slider is typically at at unity (0)

I have the 310A's at 1 pm as well as the SB2A's

I'm running the xover in 2 way stereo - Inputs gain is at 1pm (+2 db...)

The high out is at 12 pm (-10) the low out is at 2pm (-6)

low high cut is at about 90 hz...... after playing around, this seems to be the sweet spot....


Thoughts?


These little babies kick.....One thing I have noticed... is that they do sound a lot different than my 705AS...the RCF hits you much harder and seems to go deeper..... That being said...the "kick" drops off a short distance from thew sub...

The EV seems to be more of an overall "tone" bass. There's kick.....but not heart stopping...as I expected....The bass seems cleaner, if you get what I mean.....The overall sound is really pleasing to the ear...even cranked....

I'm going set up the 705AS and try some tests...side by side....

I think the 705AS may be louder....not sure.

I do have 2 SB122's on route..it will be interesting to see what these add?


Anzyxx - what's your experience with the limiter light....I'll get it blinking occasionnaly.....Any worries?

Ben - will these units shut down if pushed too hard?

Steve, when you A/B them, do me a favour... Try playing Day N Nite (Crooker's Remix) through them and let me know what you think... I love the sound when the bass kicks in at 1:15 in on this video. It really makes the 705 sound good!

As I said ...I think the RCF has more "kick"....it should given that it's a 15" 800 watt sub in a birch cabinet.....but for what i do.....I think the SB2A/SB122 will do the job more than plenty.... I could blow a candle out with the air coming out of the front of the SB2A....for a 35lb plastic box...I was really surprised....
 
it is after all a distant relative

to the Power Sub 315 which the air pushed can blow out a hundred yr olds birthday candles. The tone also incredibly deep powered bump.:sqwink:

You have the 3145's...right?

So I did an informal a/b....in my family room....The subs are all in front of me....
2 SB2A's vs 1 705AS

Tried Poker Face (or for some Poke Her Face/ F9ck her face) and Flo Rida - Low.....


that latter typically brings the 705AS to a limit light pretty quick...

I think the 705AS goes a bit louder before the limiter light flickers; it was pretty close though.....

As I suspected the 705 seems to go a bit lower; the EV sound seems fuller/clearer...The hits on low definitely sounded different..

Again I'm really curious to add the SB122's

Steve, the limiter blinks on my subs from time to time. I don't worry about as long as i don't hear any clipping.
I run my subs at 3 pm, in the store they run them at 6 pm :sqerr:
I have been told that the harder you push them the more cooling is produced and is very hard to overheat them.
I'm sure that Ben will be able to tell us more.

The only song that gives me trouble is Rasputin. I'm not able to play this at the very high volume (i can hear a lot of clipping) with the ZX1. No big deal, is still loud.

I'm looking forward to see what do you think of the 1-SB2A/SB122 combo vs. 1-705AS

Steve I think the EV rig will leave you looking for more out of it later on in the near future.

I guess you are looking to scale back on weight, but your RCF 310's and the 705 sub are a very nice match.

The EV will make a nice small wedding system for older folks, but if you end up with a crowd looking for some serious bump it may run out of gas too soon.

Either way. Good luck with your new rig.

Rasputin - don't know what it is...but that songs literally makes my Maxx 6A's fart like crazy...I have to scale the bass back as well....

John, it's a weight thing for one....just looking to try something different.....Our weddings here versus in your local are likely very different. Look at my and Jeff Romards list; we rarely play a lot of "new" stuff...I never get a call for it; never been asked to "turn it up". Venues are typically smallish...

John - The 310A/705A is a nice match....one thing I'll have with the SBA2A's and SB122's are 2 small systems, for the very small event...

Honestly, the 705AS does not "bump" to any great extent....at least that's been my experience running it for 2 years....

Right now - 2 SB2A's to me are so close in comparison to 1 705AS..adding the 2 SB122's might mean the difference and put me above the 705AS....I've got a gig next week in a decent sized ballroom. That will tell the tale...

Rasputin sounds incredible through a Dynacord system. Better than the clown sound and anything I have had the pleasure pumping it through.
