I get monthly MP3 from TopHits/RPG...fills in the blanks that PrimeCuts may not have yet in their weekly discs.

Mac, you can buy tracks from I Tunes and then use the "create mp3 version" when you're in the "purchased" section.

I stopped using Amazon since almost all of their tracks are variable bit rates, and they are difficult to forward and reverse in RockIt.

So for me, it's Prime Cuts and I Tunes for stuff I missed.

Well, since we're cd based, problems with computer programs don't bother us :tritongue:

As for iTunes, well I have a strong dislike of Apple so I don't buy or support any of their stuff.
 
Related note... mp3 is a lossy codec especially on a low bitrate. I notice once i really get mp3s pumping on the volume, that it seems to just miss stuff. it sounds garbly, etc. It doesnt happen with wav files (as wav files are lossless) does anyone know of any services where you could but cd quality wav files? Id love to switch a good majority of my library over to .wav but i just cant find any services that have good quality ones. Any thoughts anyone?

I report on Music directly from the Labels so I get a free download in return. Its only a few things I am not able to get so I buy from Amazon. I am not overly worried about the Bitrate because my DJ software has an Automatic Gain Feature so the level remains consistent at about 320

But in that case your output bitrate is 320, but if you have an mp3 at 128, your software cant recover information that has been previously lost due to bitrate compression.

MP3's can be done @ 320 as well. Some choose to do them smaller so that they can have more room. Some also think that they're not 'loosing' anything and that no one will know the difference. The majority of my digitized library (95%) is 320k.

That gain feature is for VOLUME only.

There is nothing available that will take a 128 bit rate and "gain" it up to a 320 bit rate. Once it's been ripped at a low bit rate, you cannot recover what was lost.

Mac, I too am not all that fond of Apple (or Walmart) and their strong arm tactics - hence my use of a 160gb Zune and not an I Pod.

I use I Tunes as there is no other site with a huge catalog where mp3 tracks are available at 320cbr.

If Amazon did, that's where I'd be.
 
Prime Cuts is great, if you want to pay for stuff you may not use. I avoid itunes mostly because i hate the software frontend and its bad enough you are losing quality when files are encoded into aac, even worse when you have to re-encode it to mp3.

Amazon is my main source for all of my general mobile gig tracks, beatport for EDM.

My question is related to the legality of playing tracks acquired from amazon. Is it a "grey area" for licence fees or are you in the wrong?
 
I'd say it's a grey area - sort of. Usually the limitations are on public performance of said tracks (i.e. clubs, car shows, radio, etc.). But birthday parties, weddings and corporate type stuff are all private events.

I sleep better knowing that every song I play was purchased. It's the guy who purchases a fully loaded harddrive off ebay that could get in big trouble if caught.
 
Wes the sad thing is I dont ever see that happening. There is a guy in Canada who even calls DJs from different ad materials, FB, Craigs, website info to offer said HDs with lifetime upgrade. They have been pointed to the Subscription services along with the AVLA and pretty much told we cant do anything about it.

Thats where processing comes in to play a big part. Once processed, I can hardly tell the difference. Its hard to process music when one goes from mixer straight to powered speaker.

Seconding this. I'm vetting my catalog over time, i have a lot of ripped music from my own collection of cd's from the past, very often ill come across cd's for sale on the cheap and snap them up, then rip and add them. Binders of cd's everywhere......everrryyywhereeee...
 
I've been doing that for YEARS. I have SO many CD's! Aside from the pools, I buy used CD's and add them to the library too.
 
I am in an INSANELY great digital record pool. The guy has just about everything that comes out for dance, pop, country, hip-hop.... you name it.
You go in via FTP and can pick and choose from a huge catalog (over 50,000 I think from the 50's on up)

A music subscription is the only professional way to go. This is how the radio stations acquire their music--music subscriptions. There are over a half dozen good services out there . After using several of them myself over the years, I have found that Prime Cuts provides me with everything I need. This service edits out ALL objectionable lyrics. Other services often add a footnote that a tune contains lyrics with parental advisory recommendations. Prime Cuts has never presented me music requiring such advisories.
