I am a lighting designer by profession, but I am also a sound engineer (but no, I am not a DJ) by trade. I know why you solo a channel when using a CD, I do the same thing. But I do it because I can not see a track title. When I am using an iPod or a PC it depends on if it is my iPod or PC. If it is my library, then I do not solo the channel because I have done work on the front end and know everything lines up. If it is someone else's then I do.
I am not a DJ, but I am not stupid.

I'm not calling you stupid, just pointing out that you may not fully understand the thought work that goes on behind the board.
For the record, there are cd players that will display the track title, album title, artist, etc.
Regardless, none of this discussion has to do with my original post. I've decided to stick with CDs and the occasional vinyl session for the sake of not being the average DJ. You can call it spite, call it fighting change or progress, call it being old-school; I call it having fun and being comfortable behind the board. Yes, CDs might someday be replaced with all-digital formats and songs may never again be released on vinyl. When that time comes, I'll roll with it. In the meantime, I'll keep bringing in my CD collection to events and let people be impressed.
I call it using what you are happy with and using what helps make you the best DJ you can be. Good for you.

Not having used cd players in years, i did not know that. I thought it had to be an mp3 cd player to display that...because of the tag information. I was not aware that audio cd's were putting the tag information on there...are they?

I didn't mean average as in having mediocre skills. I meant that I stay off the beaten path; I don't tend to stay with the mainstream. Sorry if I offended you there.
For the record, I would like to point out that I(as well as most PCers) never said that every DJ should use a computer. I don't think that's true. I simply said that the computer has given ME many advantages over the way i used to do it with cd's and I certainly encourage anyone thinking about it to try it, but it is not for everybody. Just as cd dj's could have problems if they don't take the time to put cd's away properly and it the right place, pc dj's could have problems if they don't take the time to tag things properly and organize their library to take advantage of the software's abilities.
A lot of the higher end models will display the tags. You figure that the tags must already be on the cds because you can put a cd (especially newer ones) into a computer and the program is able to tell you the artist, track listing, etc.
I was under the impression that when you put a cd into a computer, it get the artist and track info from the internet, not from tag info on the cd. I could be wrong though.

3) No, as previously mentioned on that other forum, not normally. ESPECIALLY not normally for me. Others will attest to this. Please read through the forum to find out how rare this really is.
However, I would also add, since I'm the one that invited you here, that sometimes it's best to lay back from a debate until you know the players.
Despite all the heat you see being thrown around here, we all have a great and mutual respect for each other. I even have great respect for that New York bum. If you have software questions, he's a "go to" guy!

5) Not quite right. Comments from CD users are usually REACTIONS to PC users' comments. On the other hand, PC users seem to feel comfortable jumping into any thread and pushing their media without being asked, or without it being germaine to the thread.
Especially Kenwood cd players for your car are good about showing the titles and such, and unless you've got that onstar type stuff, there's no way for a car to get the internet.
Depends on the manufacturer ( AND the age of the CD), but now, in most cases, yes. Of course, the easiest way to tell is to slip one of your discs into your PC while running your music program. In many, but not all cases, the tags show up.
However, I've found some discrepancies, even with MP3s. Napster won't read iTunes tags, for instance...
I read the contest description. It was a rigged contest. That is why I put that clarification in the points.
As I said, if a CD DJ gets to line up his CD's in the contest, then the PC DJ gets to make a playlist of the songs ahead of time. I don't see how you can beat a 0 second cue time.

I beg to differ. In every industry even mine there are nuances that comes with the gig. The fact that you do these things without thinking (automatically, muscle memory, instinct, whatever you want to call it) doesn't mean they don't have to be done.
Just as I call out channel or unit numbers by the same instinct (I do it without looking or thinking), it still takes me a certain amount of time to actually say the channel numbers.
It is a false dichotomy, even if something is instinct it still takes a certain amount of time to do.
