I have no lighting and was wondering what would be an initial light set up you could get. For doing School dances, Christmas parties, things like that.

I would recommend you look into LED lights for room uplighting and dance floor washes to start with, and then look into come moving lights or scanners for movement and exciting.

Definitely some LED PAR cans, panels, or strips for dance floor wash. If you go with PAR cans then you could also use them for uplighting when no dance floor lighting was required. An American DJ REVO III would be a good choice for some action, and I know it has been said here over and over, but if you can find a used Martin Acrobat on eBay you would love it.

2 colorstrips or mega pixel LED's and an acrobat would be a great place to start. An EFX-500 is a comparable light. For schools especially, you'll want somethign that will produce a lot of light beams with minimal setup...thats the beauty of the acrobats and efx series.

I have no idea how much any of this costs, so before I wanted to set a budget, I want to get a rough idea of how much these things cost. I can assure you my budget will not be very much as my wife already wants to shoot me for spending on the things I did already to start up. lol

Tom - 2 Colourstrips will run $500.00. This will give you a ton of wash.....Then really, it's down to effect lighting.....
Personally, I'd look at a Chauvet Swarm.....or ADJ Tri Phase (basically the same light). It gives a nice effect; I've use it for slow stuff...You're in the $200 range...even a Kinta X would be OK....
Look at the Revo 3 for a moonflower effect,
For weddings, a 12" mirror ball and a cuople of LED pinspots add a nice touch
Alos a dmx controller.....
Expect to spend $1500...that will give you a very decent show.
In theory though; 2 colorstrips in sound active ($500) a 16" mirror ball and motor ($75), two ADJ pinspots -LED ($80)...an ADJ Duratruss ($350.00),,.. and an Elation SC8 (switching pack to turn it on or off) ($100)

LED are def the way to go. Low power consumption, low heat, lightweight and long life (some are rated for 100,000 hours. That about 11 years straight..lol)

Weddings and school dances are 2 very very different setups... would never show up to a school dance with my wedding light setup and vis-versa, would never show up to a wedding with my school dance setup...
They are 2 very different things... For Weddings, U can get a way with an H20 Light, and a Vue with the option of a few LED par cans for up lighting , where as a school dance you need a few moving heads/ scanners minimum

just bought my first LED light from NLFX (thanks Ben)
it was a colorstrip that I plan on using to REPLACE about 60% of my current lights. nice color wash, with nice effects when needed.
if you really have to watch your budget, you could practically use the Colorstrip (or something similar) all by iteself.
but I'll give you about a week until your dying to buy more LED lights!

Tom - I think a light show can be crafted for both weddings and schools.
i have a couple of Chauvet Insignia Barrel Scanners that I use primarily for middle schools....you can still use the color strips and mirror ball at school dances....for the latter there are good effects lights that can be had at reasonable prices...By school I'm talking a couple of hundred kids - middle school....
High School - a whole other beast, I don't touch..
I may have a package of old school lighting; Kinta, Oceana, Starballs (II), Vue 3 (Led) and a Chauvet Elan (LED)...that I may be parting with..
While the Oceana and Kinta and Starballs are not LED; they are big room lights....They do weddings as well as school....good "starter" lights...
