Are you an entertainer, or a DJ?.... I call myself a DJ, Chuck The DJ,,, I'm tired of trying to educate people and using terms that they don't understand. It takes more time to educate them than is worth asking for more money....

Can you entertain the crowd without music?... yes

If so, how do you do it? .... Anything from full on games, Hula Hoops, Limbo, Scavenger Hunt ,,,, to just "mouthing off" if I need to to kill time... Like Ruben I have a gift of gab and a fairly quick mind. No script, just off the cuff.

And he is right, you either have that or you don't, can't be taught.

I'm not an entertainer... I'm a simply facilitator. IMHO, that is what we should be first and foremost and above all-else. If you have the natural-born ability for something else above and beyond, or have worked hard to cultivate and develop other things within your personality and abilities, then more power to you - use it and market it.

For everyone who wants to get the job done splendidly and have the time of their lives, there's a dj like me out there who can do them just fine. For everyone who wants to throw "something more" into the mix, there's a wannabe stand-up comedian or game-show-host audition reject waiting to charge and "GWTW." :rofl::sqlaugh::rofl:

But seriously... Like everything in life, there i no right and wrong here... only what each individual can offer, and what each individual client is looking for to best suit their needs and wants for their event.

There are dj's and clients for everyone.

The folly is when either "side" of the "dj-scene" tries to put value-statements or estimations on any one approach over the other.

Why are we so eager to treat the subjective as if it could or SHOULD somehow be objective?:sqconfused:

When you go to do a gig, do you take all that paraphernalia with you every time, Hula Hoops etc?
 
If the power goes out at the movie theatre, when you want to see a movie, do you want the projectionist to come out and start telling jokes?

This is the kind of lucid thinking that is so lacking among DJs - and is the true demise and tragedy of the "industry."

Instead, the clarity of our role is drowned out by the tin can clashing of every Tom, Dick, and Harry who can shove a grape up their nose and call it "entertainment."
 
Silly Rabbit.... Sticking it up your nose isn't what's entertaining... it's BLOWING IT BACK OUT that's the life of the party!

Let's try a mango. Do I entertain YOU? The point of the matter is, though, that my kind of "entertainer" is not necessarily the kind that would please everyone at a wedding, especially when people want to dance, drink, and be merry. Or I could break out my rendition of LOVE STORY. Eh?

I stand around and ask rhetorical questions like, "Hey, when are they coming out with LAPTOP HERO?" I really want to know what it's like to be a real DJ, but I don't even carry around a spare cake cutter.

I think I know where your question is going and I will try to answer it!

Actors are entertainers, comedians are entertainers, singers are entertainers, clowns are entertainers, TV wrestlers are entertainers, Football players are entertainers, Baseball players are entertainers, strippers are entertainers, hookers are entertainers, and yes even DJ's are entertainers!

One doesn't have to do what all the others are doing to be an entertainer, what you must be able to do is hold the attention of your audience for a given amount of time to allow them an escape for a short period. If the lights go out the party is probably over anyway hard to do much in the dark anyway. But there are many games that can be played if the DJ is adapt at it, standup can be a time killer as well again if the DJ is capable of it, there are many things that can be done but it really all depends on what the audience is really into. 9 times out of 10 if they are there to dance the DJ putting on a clown suit or doing magic tricks isn't going to hold them.
 
When the lights go out, my priority is doing what I can to get the show up and running again, not get my tap shoes out and do the soft step.

About 2 years ago, we were doing a wedding up at the hotel at Cedar Point. A big storm hit and killed the power. Tornado like winds were coming off the lake. It killed the power to the hotel. I asked one hotel person if there was a Home Depot nearby where we could get a generator. He said we have one in the basement, went and got it ...fired it up and the party went on.
 
Had the lights go out on me once (Blown Transformer outside)when I worked in the Club at a Resort. There was a stage so I went and got my Bose AWM which is also powered by 10 D Cells and used CDs. I did it because neither anyone or myself had anywhere else to go. We were all there for the weekend. We used candles for a light source.
 
when the lights go out. 1. If it is close to Halloween I invite everyone to sit in a big circle on the dance floor while I get the eldest of guests to share ghosts stories from the past. (Gramps usually will tip me handsomely for helping him to get folks to listen to him once again).
2. I invite my Uncle Bud to do shadow puppets on the wall. Of course using my handy dandy crank up flash light.

3. I get out a blow up guitar and pass out ear plugs so the guests can choose their own favorite songs to imagine playing through the fake guitar as I get the Party planner to perform her impression of Air guitar for them after all she is the most important person in the loop.

If I share more you will have to buy the DVD.

Funny you should ask that question, Rick.

When my son was visiting Florida two weeks ago we went out to the beach for some seafood and music. "The Cafe on the Beach" hires a one man band guy who sings along to instrumental / drum tracks while playing his guitar.

My son watches the guy play his first selection and says "so he's a real entertainer, not just a DJ".

I just looked at him feigned offense and said "thanks a pant load, son".

He says "Oh Dad, I didn't mean it that way".

We had some good laughs about that slip up, but you know I never let him off the hook for the rest of the visit.

At least according to my son I'm "just a DJ".
