Name an artist who you think will be around for a long time as a best seller. Category does not matter, it could be pop, country, R & B etc.
My pick is Michael Buble

....just look at Madonna, she was not been able to sustain her success into the 2000s.

Think on that for a second... She got the nod for the SB show, almost 30 years after her career start. People still play her music all the time.

She's also the best selling female artist of all time, from what I understand.

Hard to argue she is not in the lifelong category... ;)

But here's the thing, people do play her music all the time.....but not the new stuff....when was the last time you heard someone say "wow, that new Madonna tune is great".

Yes she has had longevity in her career, but it all based on the first ten years of her career, not the last 20.

You might want to read her discography dude -- she's still cranking out stuff that sells big... ;)

as Rick said she still can get the big gigs the Super Bowl is her next one. Hung UP is still used and heard on the radio. The 4 minutes was very big. Her new album is releasing soon. She has had one or two fairly popular hits from every album to date. Lady Gaga will continue to transform and share her other talents as time moves forward. Her new video is going to make a big waves good, bad and ugly but she is keeping herself in the news and it helps that she really is an accomplished musician namely the piano. Brittany Spears has rebounded nicely as well. I thought for sure she would be a one hit wonder but she continues to put out songs people like amongst the masses.

Look at the chart positions pre and post 2000. ALL her hits came before 2000. "Die Another Day" was from a movie, so it had that promotion push behind it, and 4 Minutes has Justin Timberlake on it, so that explain that songs popularity. Outside of that, peak chart positions: 23, 37, 35, 58 71 and then 7 for Hung Up. Not exactly burning up the charts there.

Do you really think the Super Bowl is bringing her in because of her current stuff? Of course not. Look at when Petty did the show a few years back, he did ALL older stuff and nothing from his new discs.

Patrick -- she's good at what she does, there is no denying it.

I consider her the female Paul McCartney. Very talented, and business savvy.

I wish I could do what they do, but that's not in my cards (although I play cards well, and pool better). :)

It doesn't hurt to give credit to folks who work hard at what they do, and are successful...

Calvin Cordozar Broadus, Jr

I'd pick Nelly. I think he's one of the few r&b artists that has staying power & writes some reasonably good songs.

Lady Gaga definitely has talent & she can sing really well as demonstrated on her collaboration with Tony Bennett. Madonna will still rock in 10 years time. True her new songs arent as good as the old ones but she is still an A class superstar.

I tink Lady Gaga has the writing and performing talent to last a while.
but I think she will decide to quit while she is ahead.

Madonna may not of had a hit since the 2000's
but let's not forget she ruled the charts for 20 years or more
not bad for a pop princess

my first thought was also Michael Buble
great voice (without straining), honors the classic artists, is not a publicity whore,
is not seen out partying all the time...
and seems like a genuinely nice guy

I don't get the whole thing with Buble or Gaga -- they seem like copycats to me. Every artist has inspirations, but unless they innovate, they are merely cover bands...

I'll give ya the meat dress was sorta cool -- but not that cool...

You have to constantly redefine yourself, in order to have longevity in this business -- are either doing that...?

Rick....it's ALL been done before.
EVERYONE who started in the music biz after 1960 is a copycat in some form.

as for "redefining yourself"....
every artist who tried to do something that was different than what they were known for....has failed...

so that playing the "same old same old" has worked all that well, either.
but in TODAYS music world, longevity is NOT the goal.

How would you describe lets say Pink Floyd then...? MJ comes to mind as well.

Take a full listen to Abbey Road some time, and try to find the influences...

When folks can take it to a new level, and still be successful (and we still listen to, and play their music) -- that is longevity IMHO :)

I'm not saying there is nothing "original" out there
just not anything original ANY MORE! with a VERY few exceptions!

but even with the few talented people out there...
there are no more classic artists or classic songs. it's all re-hashed these days.
the era of Freebird and Stairway to Heaven are long gone
because artists today don't have the staying power that Pink Floyd and Michael Jackson had.

they are content to replicate, duplicate, steal, cover or sample songs from the past
make their money, and move on
