What I am getting at is that it is EASY to replace equipment and computers, but what about your music?

This thought just occured to me while on another board where someone was talking about what you would grab, if you had a chance, if your home was on fire...

This very week, I will make ANOTHER hard drive copy of my files and put it in my bank's safe deposit box. Doesn't do me any good to have a backup HD in my house if my house burns down, now does it?

Good idea Papa/Chuck.

If there is a fire or our house is destroyed otherwise, we would be out of business. :(

I have back up hard drives at the house and the office. The question raises a good point even though we have a KILLER insurance policy and payout would be fast, fast to the insurance company is about a week, In our area it would be VERY VERY tough to repenish equipment if we were robbed on a Thursday night. We do have sprinklers and just about everything covered if they were to go off too if there was a fire

Papa : Having preached the off-prem backup copy for years, allow me to point out a grevious oversight in your plan. What banks are open Friday night, Saturday's and Sundays?

Make a duplication of your music AND your complete current and historical data and store it off-prem where you can retrieve it in a heartbeat. Minutes, not hours nor days Even a weather proof vault in your back yard is better accessible than a bank vault. But, yes, keep another one there too as a backup to the backup.

Absolutely

Both the house and studio would have to burn along with 5 seperate loaded vehicles to completely destroy all the gear and music!

I would be alright.....

A cd player....some flash lights....and a mickey mouse mic...I would have it all back! Well...ok...no cd player....just a computer and limewire!

I actually have two setups in two trailers....and I dont normally double book...so mostly yes I would be ok.....but possibly no.

We also have a rental place around here that could set me up. I also think if I really needed some of the other dj companies would help me out! "I would return the favor in a heartbeat!"

So I hope to say yes.....but it could be a no!

I have several copies in several different places plus the originals....

The queston remains how legal is it to use the copies if you lose the originals?

Since my office is located in an industrial zone (in fact flameable materials are stored in my building) I stress the following. a) Emergency fund, a no bs plan where you have excess funds saved to allow you to go out and purchase a replacement sound system at a retail store on the spur of the moment! b) Insurance plan

I don't wait for insurance to cover something if I lose everything in my business. I do carry backups. My building is "grandfathered" with an old alarm, system, it passed inspection, surprised! However, it does work, and I have wired it to notify me instantly if it goes off via my alarm system. I can hop on the cameras at the office remotely to determine false/true alarm, and react accordingly.

Heck the alarm would call me 10 times in a row, I stopped that! I found out the Acknowledge & Kissoff tone (frequency in Hz), now when it calls, I just hold up my cell phone to my laptop speakers and it will stop :D

Basically (if you have a monitored alarm) the alarm will talk to the central monitoring station, essentially playing "music" like a fax machine does, only a much easier to harness communication protocol. Thought about writing a Visual Basic program for it, go figure.

Of course? Backups for EVERYTHING are stored at a separate location. That doesn't mean I don't insure the heck out of the stuff though...

I'd be fine. About 2 months ago, after upgrading to a new desktop at home, I set up the second computer at my wife's daycare business to run the business from. I have seperate external hard drives on each and can talk to each computer via internet (not sure exactly how this was done because my computer geek friend set it up) and I'm able to sync the externals which contain my music and client information.

DO NOT PUT A HARD DRIVE IN A SAFETY DEPOSIT BOX.... Please everyone... You should never put a hard drive or floppy drive in a safety deposit box... They are made out of magnetic material, and you will go to plug the drive in and will be corrupt to no end... My advice would be find a friend, trusted DJ partner, or some where else... The only thing you can put in safety deposit boxes are CDs and DVDs

Good points.

Personally, I keep a backup a my mother-in-law's house. She's the only one I can trust to not hook it up to see what's on it or copy it. Heck, not only does she not own a computer, she doesn't like technology so much, she doesn't own a microwave oven!

Of course, she doesn't own a microwave because they cause cancer. (Never mind that she smokes over a pack a day.)

heard of a bunker / fireproof box in the backyard ? somewhere away from the house ?

I store all my digital files, pictures, documents, music at www.carbonite.com. For $50 per year you have unlimited storage and retrieval. I just has my main hard drive crash. Once I was able to get my new HD up and running I could then go online and retrieve all the files I needed and only those that I wanted. I could also have retrieved them to another computer if I had to.

Besides that I have 3 other duplicated drives and one stored at a friends house. As for the equipment, I have enough around to handle emergencies. It would be frustrating but easily taken care of.

If anyone is interested in carbonite.com let me know. I get a few month if anyone signs up. I don't really care about the free month but what the hell.

Should be fine, a pain but I could survive. I have at least 4 copies of my music one that I keep offsite. As for sound, if it is a weekday, I can have a new set of Bose L1's within 1-2 days, I could come up with a laptop use overnight. Until I got a new mixer I could plug the laptop direct into the L1s with a 1/4" cable, and use the handheld Bose mixer. I could come up with a wired mic fast, plug it direct into the L1. My current client list is online, as well as offsite. Lights my take a little longer to replace, but I could grab a couple local to get me through a quick crunch.
