I did a 50th wedding anniversary party today and had awesome coverage and sound in the room and I am not being a jerk here it really did sound good and covered every inch of the room.
I used 4 10 inch speakers placed them under the DJ table with the speakers panned 180 degrees across the room. I cut everything above 10,000 hertz and everything below 100 hertz.
The sound was clear as a bell and you could hardly tell any difference in the volume level anywhere in the room as long as it was playing at a low level. Once I began to crank it on up to the 100DB range the sound was much louder on the dance floor but not too loud in the rest of the room.
So I had a system that no one could see, sounded great for dinner music, didn't drowned out any conversation, it just worked damn well for a group of older people.

There are some street performers downtown with JBL 10s and they kick. You don't know where the sound is coming from and then you're amazed!

Steve what unit are you using to achieve this? My mixer has a low pass filter, but nothing for highs.

This can be done with an active crossover or a rackmount EQ unit, buyer's choice. It's all in how ya set it up.

The best explaination for the results that I can come up with is that frequencies above 10,000 hertz are much more reflective off of surfaces in the room as those below 100 hertz are. Perhaps placing them on the floor made a difference as well, I will have to do some more experimentation with the setup when the chance to do so comes up.

Thunder : That's all I ask of my system. Unobtrusive, nearly invisible, pleasing to the crowd, crisp, clean, clear, real, no feedback, and easy to set and break. I don't care whose label is on it. When something comes along that's better than the L1s in all these check points, I'll buy it yesterday.
Interesting you should mention your testings. I gave a listen to a Dynacord (specs are out there) system and have to say it was very nice (I think ProDJ's Nicky B runs one). Considering a test run just for giggles. A bit concerned with the "loud" factor.

Cap I have and though an old fart as well Im buying the Dynacord as it takes up less space.Your systems were my original choice and I do like the sound of them.

I have not listened or even seen the Dynacord systems, but I am seriously considering it. I have to wait until my accountant (wife) says I can spend the money. I am considering the D-lite 2000 system but I want 4 of the D8 speakers with the 315 sub.
To be honest with you this past Saturday was the first time I had ever tried this configuration and setup and was honestly suprised by the sound and coverage. It's not a setup that I would use where heavey bass was needed but for the group I was playing for it worked out fantastic. I think keeping the DBs down below 100 was a major key to the systems coverage, perhaps the low projection height was part of it as well as cutting certain frequencies out of the mix.

I've been noticing similar reaction to my Eon 10 G2s, since I started using them in place of my Eon 15s.
1) the smaller size is rather disarming, but they put out ENORMOUS amounts of sound volume in a large area.
2) because of the smaller magnets, they are MUCH LESS (almost never) likely to produce Feedback from microphones getting too close to the loudspeakers.
3) they look really nice atop the dual ACT-18's. Only one of the 18's gets power, the other one is a "dummy" to provide symmetry and a matching stand for the Eon 10s.
For the last 2 weddings, I've used my 15 inch powered JBLs for the ceremony--- leaving the 10's for the reception hall!
(The 15's do a better job outdoors, with background noise from roads etc)

I don't think you need to worry about the loud so much, you can always turn them down and still have the kick when you need it.
Spec wise I am really not impressed with the D8's 1W1M rating but using four of them and considering the gigs I intend to use them for I think they will work. The plus will be flexability of the system with the 4 8" speakers being demunitive in size they will be easy to hide around a room.
I don't mind lifting the 100+ pound B-52 cabs NOW, but I could imagine a time when they didn't work for me (older, more frail, back problems).
By then, I'll have some kind of ramp device (or wheelchair lift) for my equipment, to save my aching back!
Meanwhile, I like the look of dual 18's in a room, very compact but hefty in size means business!
When the booty rap music starts playing, they all notice!
Although when I'm too old for those 20-30 year old couples, the nursing home circuit won't appreciate those dual Eighteens!!!

I am going to jump in this thread late and offer my 2 cents worth (probably only worth a half a cent with the value of our dollar these days!) Anyhow, I must say that I am not overly intelligent when it comes to the specifics of certain systems and what companies do or don't do to make them sound they way they do. What I can say is that back in May I purchased a Dynacord D-Lite 3012 from Ben at NLFX (the 3012 being two D12-3 tops and one power sub 315 and a sub 115). Before Ben had mentioned DC to me, I had never even heard of the company before! Much to my surprise it is the best sounding system I have ever encountered. I am not here to bash another brand or whatever because I believe in this simple phrase: "to each his own" I can say that the Dynacord has done way more than turn heads for me! I have gotten so many compliments on the clarity and coverage of this system I would have to write for days to express them all! The system itself has booked me many events recently because bar owners want to hear it in their venue to see if it can still perform in their over-sized cement rooms! And to their disbelief, the DC never has let one of them down, and have re-booked every venue I have played at thus far. I did two outside shows for surrounding towns the last couple weekends, one for 400+ guests and the other for about 250. Last weekend a woman came up to me who lives 5 1/2 blocks from where I was playing and said she could hear the music in her living room with her windows and shades closed and it was just as clear as if she was right next to the system. I have never pushed the limits of this system (never turned it past half way actually) I booked 4 shows from that performance! But my rambling is probably boring most of you, I just want to give my input to the Dynacord because before I purchased mine, I researched DC online and didn't find many testimonials. And I know that no where did I read that those two 15" subs would rattle drink glasses up to 100' away outside! I am truly impressed and would gladly tell people more about my DC experience if they wish to hear! I have to give props to Ben at NLFX for hooking me up with above satisfactory gear and top notch customer service! Thats my half cent worth!

Just to be icky: Being a brilliant EE, I have thrown both scope and meter on several EV speakers, as well as a BUNCH of others ( I don't trust my hearing as a judge point- too subjective). While I like ( subjectively) several different brands of speakers, Electronically speaking, EV results are:
1) best full range response
2) Probably the only ones that I've tested that actually fully meet the published specs. Unfortunately, way too many mfrs. fudge. If not the specs, then the way they are presented.
No knock on the sound of anyone's favorite, just speaking electronically, and only from those EVs and others ( EV, JBL, Peavey, Bose, Gemini, the dreaded Techni-Pro, Mackie, Audio 2000, etc...) that I tested...which I do before buying anything. A portable oscilliscope (and meters) will save you a bundle of money and troubles.....
BTW- Techni-Pro, a cheap EV knock off, actually sound halfway decent, as long as you remember that their max wattage is about 1/3 of that presented, and starts to distort at about 60% max ( in other words, junk- I was being sarcastic about the sound)
