I know a DJ that uses a Bose Sound System.

I tease the "BOSE'ers" (not bash), only because I want them! :sqlaugh:

The truth is, I have 4 working speakers and I am a working DJ. Nothing is broken that the Bose would fix. I want them for vanity and that's just not worth the 4K.

I think the clients would appreciate their quality, but I don't think they would make me any more busy. I also refuse to bump my rates to compensate for upgrades. Alas, I"ll have to wait for extra dough.

Hey, how about a "Logos for Bose" campaign?

Man Ill tell you I love my logo bro. I just got my shirts and they are so cool. When ever I get comments on how professional it looks then I tell them about you.

The Physics of Sound don't change regardless of brand name
So based on the logic of that superfluous statement, there really should only be one brand of speakers, one speaker design, and one manufacturer that employs the "perfect specs" according to the "perfect law of physics". If so, someone needs to explain why there's so many brands, some many designs, and such a wide diversity of prices. There's something that probably none of the people on this forum would've thought of on their own because we're all stupid and are incapable of evaluating what we hear and how it works on our own.

Thank goodness for the Audio Cops.

But some of the less ignorant have come to realize that, physical law is constantly being retested, reevaluated, and manipulated in means and by methods unknown to many during their audio formative years. Physical science has grown within physical law and some haven't kept up. While wallowing in those 10 year old text books, audio technology, especially in the field of psycho-accoustics has made great leaps while they've been asleep.

It is true that the "Basic Physics of Sound" don't change such as what affects it's ability to project and the direction in which it takes....

But, there are Advanced Physics of Sound that affect it too. Such as direction and reflection. Hence why some manufactures of standard speakers tote the angle of dispersion from things like horns and then there's the whole shape, size, diameter, and length of tuned bass ports...

If the Physics of sound was so basic none of the above Advanced Physics would have an affect on the overall sound of a speaker or system of speakers.

Cap is correct... sorry.

There is no honest method of comparing the L1 to conventional PA systems. How many times does it have to be said? :)

Each system has its uses. Each has its strengths and weaknesses. Everything has a limit ~ there's a law of physics that won't change.

Cap brings up a good point ~ 30 years ago, an expensive FM radio or stereo system sounded great at the time. Today, one can get a better tone from a bookshelf stereo from China that costs a helluva lot less than the '70s vintage hi fi set. The improvements in tone and response didn't happen by trial and error. There have been many years of research and calculations involved in design alteration since then.

Since the laws of physics can't change, we need to change how we apply them. This has involved the close study of sound wave propagation with computer assisted design. The days of getting a good frequency response and projection from a single driver never existed to begin with. At one time we thought it was good. Technological advances in electronics and enclosure design have demonstrated that it can be made better.

What do you think prospective customers really care about? That you have the tools to do the job well? I should think so.

OKay maybe this will help the thread with this scenario................

Groom asks you point blank that he has met another DJ that uses the Bose L1 System and he likes the other DJ and You.

I am asking for help on how to respond to the following question.

Groom says - Why should I select you and your system over the other DJ with the Bose L1 System.

My only responses I have to that question so far is..............................................

The chances of the DJ with the Bose L1 System are greatly increased that they won't have a back up tower.

I could lie and say that the chances of failure are greatly increased with a system that uses many drivers especially if they are in a sequence so that if you loose one the entire system will go down. (I don't know if that is true but what would be the chances of the Groom checking on that)

There is a awe factor with 18 inch woofers for those that like their music loud. In other words as the guest are going through the cocktail music the dinner music and waiting in anticipation for the Party Music they are looking at the 18 inch woofers and the more know speaker configuration that most DJs use knowing they won't be disappointed where as the Bose L1 System is a unknown factor whether they will perform as expected to many of the guests.

You could point out that the tabs that allow the Bose Tower system to connect to each other are weak points in the system as compared to conventional speakers that don't have to be snapped together like lego blocks in order for the speakers to perform.

Any other thoughts or suggestions that would allow me to answer that question asked by the Groom in my favor.

Why should I select you and your system over the other DJ with the Bose L1 System....

I have heard the BOSE system and it is a very good unit. I personally use XYZ equipment and it is also very good. The bottom line is as far as sound quality goes, we both have the same. I would hope that what will help you make your final decision is how you feel about me personally and if you feel that I will be able to help you have an outstanding day and make your dreams of a perfect wedding day come true.

It doesn't matter what type of equipment I use, or what type your photographer uses, or what type of mixing bowl your chef uses. It really comes down to, and you should feel the same way about all your wedding vendors, if you think that we are on the same page about the feeling you want to have at your reception...... blah blah blah

and BTW this is not a BOSE tharshing thread so stop it or I will have it closed....

Cesar,

To be honest, I dunno. If a groom was pressuring me to compare sound systems, I'd be asking some questions of my own. Like why, for instance. Why has a comparison between DJ companies become a comparison between business equipment choices?

Seriously, I'd be asking the groom what they want from a DJ company.

If the B&G want a low-key affair with your basic itinerary and dancing, the L1 will serve nicely. I'm not convinced that potential failure of the L1 would be an issue. Any sound system can be misued. Anything can break. Experience with the system of choice would be the deciding factor. Or should be, anyhow.

If the B&G want a dance club atmosphere where the walls rattle and the bass response pushes the curtains out the windows (and we've seen a few), there's your argument for a conventional FOH system. Yup, you can load in 18" sub cabinets and headroom-heavy power amps and rock 'em all night if that's what they want.

That being said, the DJ company that has an L1 can load the same big, beefy FOH if that's what the venue calls for. It's a matter of selecting the right tools for the job, that's all.

Does this help?

Chuck

How can you say equipment doesn't matter. Ask the Photographer who is still using film how many Brides are concerned about that?

I think I came up with a original question that is designed to look for the short comings in the Bose System. If you want to close it be my guest.

I have the bose system and love it. But I found out on this website the other day that I cannot provide the "party atmosphere" because I do the love story some times.

Guess it's what I do and not what speakers I have!

Cesar,

If it's shortcomings in the L1 system you're looking for, why didn't ya say so. :D

The L1 is what it is. It's a smalled down line array system with preset EQ and other processing. It does what Bose claims it will do. In your groom scenario, I would have cause to wonder if the groom has personal experience with the L1 system.

Thoughts?

Cesar,,, if you are wanting to start a short comings thread, then that is not what I like to promote... here or with my clients.

It's not a good business angle to point out short comings in anything because no matter what you have, who you are, what you do, somebody can easliy find short comings.

It's better to take the higher road and try and re-focus on something positive. In this case it would be how you can make their day special.

Taking the focus off equipment, that is not what we sell. A bride is NOT going to care if a photographer shoots film as long as he has the "eye". When she looks at his portfolio, if she likes what she see's, that is what is important.

If it comes down between two DJs, photographers or whomever, and it hinges on what gear you have, you haven't done your job selling yourself.

I would suggest some selling classes for those people.

Chuck here is a story for you concerning B/G and Equipment.

I'm at a nice Hotel doing a Wedding Show. I have a one of a kind DJ System. I have 19 years experience DJing. I have a Music Library that is hard to beat. I am recognized by many Full Time Professional Vendors as someone they hope to work with.

Bride comes up and asks if I have a computer for my music. My answer is no but I have all my music cataloged on a Lap Top and it tells me where everything is. She dismisses me without a second thought as her Dad tries to explain that it is not a problem.

Equipment does matter to a select group of B/G and I like to be prepared for all of them.

Again I ask, so what? I wouldn't care less if that happened to me. Your hang-ups are your own. This topic is silly.

If a bride or groom asked me to compare my system, my computer, or whatever to someone else's, I'd simply say I couldn't. I'll be more than happy to give you my areas of expertise and the advantages of going with me, but I would not be able to tell you why my system or set up is specifically better than anyone else's.
Some DJs are skilled enough to get the best out of their sound system. Some are not. We strive not only to use the most modern, effective equipment, but also to be able to use that equipment to maximize it's benefits.
if you want to compare equipment, mr. customer, I would encourage you to ask each DJ why they chose the equipment they did, why did they choose to use computers or discs, and what do they think the advantages are.

It's still about as relevant as what groceries I bought last week, but I'll play...

*I bought my speakers based on the best sound I could get for my budget at the time. (10 years later my EONs are still working great)

*I use a computer for convenience. Quicker response time. No scratched, stolen or misplaced discs. Easier to transport. Less setup space required.

Now, I must insist that you all do exactly as I do, so that the public will no longer have to choose. We shall all be the same and the world will be a better place!

As a fellow Troll your inputs are appreciated but the silly comment is uncalled for.
The story I shared wasn't silly to me as it made me go out and buy my Lap Top, Hire a assistant to rip my music and maintain my Library, Have a custom case made to deploy my new system and many other changes in the way I do business because of that one example.

I don't know what number of events you like to do a year but I have a hunger that isn't satisfied by letting a Bride get away because of something as a Businessman I didn't think of.

Short comings of the system in question - anyone?

P.S. Cap every day this thread exists my respect grows for you, Your are a class act in my book.

I will be werry short.

IF THE DJ OWN A BOSE SYSTEM IT DOESNT MEAN HEs A GOOD DJ!!!

P.S.
I own a pair but i know for shure that im good but out there are a lot of fantastic Djs and that is the fact.
And only for info:I know a Dj with Bose and he realy dont have a clue-Hes a rooky and his Dad and Mom buys him the Bose.

Well... I would suggest getting an L1 system and do a trial run. That's the best way to find shortcomings, if any with any equipment.

All I ask is that you set it up and run it the way it was designed to be run. Cap can assist with that. If you're not happy with it, you don't have to keep it.

Reason I say this, it's probably the best way to discuss equipment choices with a prospective client. With hands-on experience with both types, you'll be prepared to discuss both types.

Thoughts?
