How Would A Client Rate a DJs System?

While it is possible to ruin a perfect steak by serving it well done, it is impossible to make a silk purse from a sow's ear.

P.S. I used a bride because it was an example from my actual experience. For the sake of discussion it could have been a stone eared bar manager.

BTW, I am one of those that like my steaks well done! That way, I know its cooked!

If you're getting a steak from the grocery store you want to make sure it's well done. Kill anything growing on it. But if you want to buy a fresh cut of expensive meet that you can cut with a fork then Medium Rare is just enough. Just like sound systems I guess, different tastes.

if the sound/clarity SUCKS...
NONE of the other qualities are gonna matter.

the purpose of a sound system is to play music.
 
I would rate them this way:

Wedding Client, Older Crowd/Class Reunion
In order of importantce-
1. Sound Clarity (Bass, Mids , Hi)
2. Size
3. Coverage
4. Brand/Label or add in Appearance
5. Power

Party Crowd (High School, College, Bar/Nightclub)
In order of importance
1. Power
2. Sound Clarity
3. Coverage
4. Size
5. Brand/Name/Appearance


We (djs) tend to overanalyze this. For MOST people (99.5%) of the public, if it sounds ok, is reasonably loud, reliable/no cutting out/static, and is in decent shape (not too worn, beat up, dirty, raggedy), and is pro equipment, it will probably be great.

I think people recognize Bose, JBL, EV, etc too, but rarely make too much judgement on this sort of thing. What about Mackie, QSC, FBT, Dynacord, EAW, KV, RCF, DB Technologies, Cerwin Vega, Turbosound, and on and on? Good stuff as well, but the public probably really doesnt care or notice....
 
Unlike those of us here, I I figure the genpop doesn't, on average, have a whole lot technical knowledge.

Only very generally speaking, I believe the biggest sellers to the uninitiated will be power and appearance.

If 2 DJs had identical looking setups, but one was 3000w and the other 8000w, the client would pick the more powerful- even if it wasn't needed at an 80 person event. It just SOUNDS cooler to them.

If both were the same wattage, and one older and beat up looking, or even just set up sloppier than the other, the client will think the neater looking system was better, even if the neat one was a set of $100 TechniPro speakers and a home CD player, and the sloppy one was a ( insert favorite brand, I don't wanna hear about it) setup.
 
There's truth to that, Joe. Playing around with numbers is an old and successful sales tactic. Like the bookshelf stereo sets that carry decals promoting impossible power ratings. :)

In all honesty, OU812 and the others are right. DJ companies are paid to play prerecorded music. The customer and guests are not being unreasonable when expecting a certain quality in tonal response from our services. In our experience, that's what people compliment us on. Our system tone.

Not how loud it is or can be. Not because it's aesthetic (it isn't). And certainly not due to the brand. We don't display logo plates anymore ~ they've been removed.

I wanted so badly to answer a post with a pic again. Isn't there ANYONE here that can tell me why my "Manage Attachments" button won't do anything? It depresses when I click it, and nothing. I've tried using the control key with the click-nothing. It's like it's disconnected... ANYONE? PLEASE?
