How many here are ADJA members?

Cap is right on target with my thinking here, and has provided some very good responses to questions and concerns. I'm only posting to mention that fact, and to mention that I not only agree, but I agree in a market with NO LOCAL ADJA chapter. I do not focus on weddings (ok, don't market or target them at all) and do not take advantage of pretty much any of the ADJA list of benefits. I am still a member. I still back the organization 100%. It's largely due to the points Cap has already mentioned. He's much better at conveying the reasons than I.

Don't belong to ADJA.

Why? Because if I joined, then the only local member can't claim that he's the first and only member..and I wouldn't want that to happen. :sqerr:

It may be fine for those who currently belong and I would never second guess your decision to belong, but at this point it's just not for me.

I was ADJA for one year. Now I am in NAME....

When my membership expires I won't be in either one..... Neither has a local chapter.... though NAME is HEADQUARTERED about 20 miles from my home. Some DJ called me and said he would look me up in Vegas about his efforts to get a Philly chapter.

As of right now I can say I have no tangible benefits, except a small discount with some purchases.

Yippee.

I have belonged to both. I now don't belong to either.
Neither represents themselves very well, why would I want them representing me?
Their incentives to join are pitiful.
The leadership (particularly a.d.j.a.) is amateurish, bewildering and with a very odd but consistent odd combo of naive, bombastic and maniacal tendencies.
No thanks.

Please explain what you mean so we understand.
How innolved were you with the ADJA?
Also, what exactly where you looking for?

I watched this thread for a long time with a stitched lip...maybe I should have not posted. I don't want to publicly post/express my specific negative feelings toward several members who I have a problem with. I don't like two faced people and the adja seems to breed them.

In our area, 3 yrs ago, most wedding DJs were getting $650-$795 for a gig.
Today, thanks to our ADJA local chapter's efforts the bar has been raised. Most all our members rates start at $1,000+

Thanks to education, networking with other wedding vendors & educating consumers that there is a difference in skilled DJs & the fly-by-nights.

It has made a huge difference in our market area. Not being afraid to share ideas & networking is they key to success.

When I see DJs posting that they are charging $595 for 5 or 6 hrs, I'll bet they don't have an ADJA chapter in their area, or they refuse to belong & stay stuck in neutral.

Bill little Clue............ Did you need the ADJA or did you need the DJs who met together? It was a successful bunch of guys who met in Phoenix. ADJA doesnt spell success you and the Phoenix boys spelled it.

A combination of everything.
The ADJA has the programs, seminars & leaders that are paving the way for our industry. Before our ADJA chapter, many DJs refused to share ideas, tips, secrets & would not support each other...we all looked at each other as competition & many would lowball & undercut each other. That's not the case now.

I network with fellow wedding DJs that are getting $1,500+ per gig & I thought what are they doing that I'm not? and guess what, they are more than happy to share their secrets.

Yes, there are still the $595 DJs here, but they think they know it all & refuse to check out what the ADJA is all about. That's fine. If they are happy being stuck in neutral & charging 1990 rates, more power to them.

I was a member initially, when the ADJA first began. It didn't sound any more attractive or viable then than it does today, but I was willing to offer my limited support with an initial membership.

Any interest in the group expired with that initial membership.

Those of you who would put some form of "unity" or "bar-raising" idealism before any real or tangible individual member benefit are naive. You cannot lift an industry by committee.

Excellence is achieved through individual accomplishment, and standards of quality are proven by repetative customer experience.

Any organization that cannot define, target, and deliver important or productive service for it's individual members will hopelessy languish in the purgatory of wishful thinking and personal testimonials.

So Bill why arent you charging the biggest price or close to it in your area?

It gives me something to work towards.

I too, was an ADJA member back about 10 yrs ago & became frustrated with the leadership then. I was invited by a fellow DJ to attend a meeting a few years ago, Became inspired by industry leaders like Mark Farrell, Peter Merry, Etc. Today's ADJA is not the same. It is so much more than just a bunch of guys with logos.

Unless you give it a try & GET INVOLVED you'll never get it.

You get out of it what you put into it. Too many guys think all they need to do is join & sit back & get referrals. It's not that way.
The ADJA is about networking with your peers, educating & advancing your skills to the next level.

I think I'm done with this subject here. Too much negativity.

I don't think it's negativity Bill, in as much that's it's been beaten to death on every DJ board on the planet.

Many folks here are independent minded (me included), and get bored with the DJ politics...

Probably why we congregate here ;)

Yeah, we very rarely talk DJ politics..... Why would you, when we can talk back hair? :sqwink:

As I said, we have no chapters in PHILLY! Such a big metro area and no chapter. This, IMO, is inexcusable, especially since NAME is headquartered here.

Why does everyone see something as negative when they don't agree with it????

Once again what do they offer that I couldn't get on my own and without paying a fee for the pleasure of it

umm Bill you asked I answered as did others. It serves no purpose for me in Canada however we do have a few similiar associations but they are strictly Eastern based. However my rates are pretty much equal to all the back east members and I am a member of CODJA. I gain proper insurance ,AVLA licensing and legitimacy with my membership Im not doing it to give back to the industry. I would like eventually to see more given back and am making effort to work the possibility for more things here in the West when I visit with my Association president in Vegas MBLV2008. There is always more than meets the screen here online Bill. I was hoping you would give more creedance clearwater for the association than a buncha guys sitting around BSing about how hey we can make prices go up. You guys did that the ADJA might have promoted the idea but you the members did it. Betcha the Delaware chapter hasnt made any strides. See it wasnt so negative after all.

Presumed ignorance? This is not something that requires a leap of a faith. An experienced and educated individual should be quite capable of making an informed decision without a taste-test.

But accepting your premise - if there is value in the ADJA isn't it the responsibility of the ADJA to demonstrate that to potential members?

You get out of it what you put into it.

Then who is serving who? In that instance, wouldn't it be accurate too say the purpose of the ADJA is simply to sell memberships?

Too many guys think all they need to do is join & sit back & get referrals. ADJA is about networking with your peers, educating & advancing your skills to the next level.

I doubt anyone is looking to DJ associations to be referral services. But I'm sure they are asking: "how does the DJ association serve it's members?

Also, how does peer education (a lateral exchange) take your service to the "next level?" I think it's more accurate to acknowledge the "learning" potential exists mainly for the new-comer or small vendor with limited resources and exposure.

The most telling evaluation a DJ associations and it's depth of resources often lies in the list of who is not a member.

Maybe not, but when I was in the ADJA, my very first party getting back in business was an ADJA referral.... my only one, but I did get one.

If one does not belong to ADJA, or NAME, or any of the others, you have no right to criticize anything about their direction or activities. You don't belong? You have no rights to cry about the inside when you're on the outside.

Yet, the direction of any organization can also be driven by a lack of membership.
