There were four or five teachers and a couple of chaperones. Their eyes were pretty much glued to the screen all night and there was not one even slight wince or finger waggle.

The over lay? Not sure what you mean exactly by overlay.

If you mean having a "crowd cam" and be able to switch from music video feed to live video feed, it's easy...and expensive!

You'll need a quality conference camera with easily controlled pan, tilt, and zoom. Something like my SONY EVI-D70. Then you need to put that cam in the air and get a video cable feed, controller cable feed, and power to and from it.

Now, you bring you camera input to a small rack mounted triple lcd monitor unit such as my Numark VM03MkII. The middle screen has what's showing on the monitor while the third monitor is the output from the laptop music video source.

Now the cam output and the laptop output are connected to a video mixing board such as my Numark AVM02 so one can mix everything together either audio and video as one or video separately or audio separately.

All in all, a few thousand bucks will get you into it.

Now if you're talking blue screen or green screen overlays, those are chromas and are a function of everything invloved...camera, laptop, video software, and most importantly, the mixer, which must have the chroma ability to begin with.

I figure I'll have a total return on investment in about 20 years.

If you mean editing each and every video and doing the heavy pixel blurring over suspect scenes or activities, Sony Vegas software will allow that but will take a two year degree equivalency in how to make it work. Learning curve is steep!!!

absolutely not, but we as djs should know what crosses the line , question for you, do you do many middle or hight school dances the reason i ask is have you listened to the words of most of the songs, ill bet 50% have something that come close to crossing the line or something that would or could be interpreted wrong. This discussion on music is a never ending battle and every taste is different but like i said before the FCC regulates what can be played on the air waves so maybe thats were the blame should start, if they ok the song then shouldn't i be able to play it

cap on your young ladies, last night i did a sweet heart dance affair for high schoolers well let me tell you there was one little girl maybe 17 as she came across the dance floor over to me her breast were 2ft. ahead of her, she had them puppys pushed up and out so far i realy dont know how they stayed in the dress my point being if and i say if i played anything that would of crossed the line who would of heared it they were TO BUSY looking at her

I really don't care that much if I don't have every track that was released that week, or in the last two weeks.

Not saying that yours or anyone who may read this thinks I'm slamming or think there's a putdown against them hidden in this, there isn't. It's an explanation of one mobile DJ career world through one narrow set of eyes...mine.

My job, as has been the philosophical mainstay since the first show in 1978 is to be the entertainer and to offer a show that is dynamic, energetic, and totally enjoyable. It means using all the learned tools from the entire career to work what's in front of me, that moment, that place, that group, which as we all know is never the same nor will be ever again.

While often called a control freak because of strong adherence to the philosophy of being impromptu and improvisational, many clients today want a script, defined out to the minute and exact songs, which may make them happy, but their guests are miserable.

While those songs may be considered old, the Starship Groove drew instant attention to the monitor, and the bass output of that track is not short of butt tickling. It served its purpose...a smack right upside the head, right out of the gate, but with something they didn't know establishing who will be in ultimate control throughout the night.

The Axel F followup parlayed the attention to the monitor, the video is fun, and they actually started to dance and get into it.

The Cold Play track was to get the guys involved because that early in the event, they were the huddled mass in the back of the room. I probably could've selected something a bit more enticing. It was a bit too adult for the house. My bad.

Thriller (the video version) had a remarkable impact. There was as many emulating the dance to the video as was doing the chacha slide. Even the guys!!

All of the other "older" songs packed the floor, they sang almost every word, and were smiling and laughing the whole time. Bingo (not dingo).

Ahhh, the joys of being an entertainer.

I only took a few from the top to show no matter what is on a TOP 40 list some groups of kids say that they are still old

EVEN if it was released last week!

now that is why I am saying what do we do if this situation comes up for even you

a group of kids that take control of the school , boo to songs that are played (thinking a week old song is new) but isnt at all.... its old to them

I been told that a few weeks ago (plus I reported it right up the top posts about what I had in my hand that they wanted NEW music (ha ha new music can only go so far)

anyway as you partly say or i'll now say, "huh the so called joys of being an entertainer"

If such as small group is willing to joust with me for what they think is power and control at the expense of the vast majority who are actually enjoying the presentation, they will be dealt with swiftly, directly, and honestly... add painfully if need be.

As I am held responsible for what I say, how I say it, and when, so shall they be. It's fair.

I started my DJ career spinning clay tablets. There are rocks in my driveway younger than me.
 
As a veteran DJ of church dances for the past 14 years, it's been my experience that the January & February teen dances are the toughest to program musically. Thanks to the vacation that the music industry takes between Thanksgiving and New Year's Eve, there's usually a drought of new music available, and what does get released is the garbage that wouldn't stand a chance of being noticed during the summertime. Case in point: "Laffy Taffy" by D4L was a hit in January of 2006 and quickly faded away.

It's not that you feel old and out of touch; it's that you want to make the dance better than everyone expects it to be and the musical tools are a little bit rusty this time of year. Wait a couple of months and I think you'll find that the "groove" will come back almost automatically. It always does.
