I've been known to slip in the Gipsy King's version of Hotel California at non-wedding events...just because! ;)

I'll normally pull out the Commitment version over the Wilson Pickett one, even though I prefer to hear his version but the other version seems to get a better response "most" of the time. ;)

YES i own it.
NO. Never played it.
But I have played similar songs, that were more familiar without success.
Why would I try something that even "I" wasn't familiar with...
when there are so many other proven songs to choose from.

I always play the remakes of Mustang Sally and If You Don't Know Me By Now.
 
Arrow the original version of "Hot hot hot", i play it a lot. I always bring it in at 13seconds, mixes in much better that way. I used to play the Buster Poindexter version until i discovered the Arrow version which works better.Theres a newish version of Hot Hot Hot out by Crossfire Vs Elephant Man which is great too.
Twist & Shout by the Beatles is always a winner for me too. The Animal House "Shout" isn't popular here.

I see that you like your comfort zone, stay in the box environment, eh! ;) Why buy a song if you are not going to play it or for that matter even try it?

Just a a singer stays with songs he is comfortable singing, or an actor picks roles he is comfortable playing.
I have a reputation (good or bad) for presenting a certain kind of show at my gigs.
People who see me at a wedding want to have me for THEIR event because THEY LIKE WHAT I DO
and they know what I will deliver.
Why should I not take advantage of that? What is wrong with being comfortable? Why should I try a version of a song that is NOT well known, popular, or requested (in my area)? I have thousands of songs I have never played. I have them, because I may get a request for one of them. And if that version is known and popular with an audience, and they request it...I'll play it!

Your question doesn't make sense, Canute. Comfort comes with doing something you are familiar with.
I am VERY comfortable because I play songs that I know will fit.
I have THOUSANDS of songs in my library that I have NEVER played.
Just because YOU play that version, and it works in Texas, that means that every DJ in every state should play it, too?
Do you know and understand the kind of people that live in the little ole Lehigh Valley of Pennsylvania?
Am I a bad DJ because I don't try a song that I am unsure will work...at SOMEBODY'S WEDDING?
A song that I have never gotten a request for?
Maybe I don't even LIKE the darn song. There are a lot of songs I do not like.
But I will play them if they are requested, and it fits the moment.
What are trying to accomplish by pursuing this issue?

Well my friend let me tell you something. Hot Hot Hot is a Soca (Calypso) song. The Genre is highly misrepresented in the Buster Poindexter's version. I am from the Caribbean so yes I do know the difference. The point I am trying to make and share with others who don't know is that if one is doing a Tropical/Caribbean Theme Party the authentic version of Hot Hot Hot by Arrow is the one that should be played. If someone, especially from the Caribbean requests that song you better not play the BP version. It is literally an insult to do so by cultural standards.

Hi Mike, i'm thinking a possible reason you don't play the Arrow version is you dont have a good recording of it?? That was my reason initially because even though i was aware of it & had it ,i always played the Buster version until a few years later when i found a better quality recording of Arrows & have been using it ever since. As mentioned i always bring the intro forward to around 13 secs as it mixes in better that way.

Save your breath Andy, when people are stuck in their Comfort Zone they won't do otherwise. I would think that a DJ would be a person who would take every chance to be creative on the dance floor and be innovative with the music selections, I guess I was wrong. Gawd, how I love the Jukebox DJs!
