Court: Christians can be ordered to violate beliefs

It's funny -- I'm certainly not a Christian anymore -- but I don't really agree with the whole gay thing. What they do behind closed doors is their business, but I don't want to watch it, or be a party to encouraging it.

So, I believe I have just as much right to not do the gig if I'm uncomfortable with it. You shouldn't have to lie to get out of it, but if that's what it takes these days -- make up a good one ;)

It really comes down to this notion of "protected classes" and whether homosexuality should be one, and when if ever there should be none.

Even race as a protected class is acknowledged to be a "remedy" - and therefore it is implied that at some point and time there would be no protected classes.

The unique difference is that race and "identity" are not to me analogous. Race is scientifically verifiable. Since it is not known what makes a person gay - it is impossible to distinguish homosexual behavior from a homosexual state of being. I can not choose to act black simply to advantage a law or accommodation - this is why I think gay rights as opposed to human rights is just bad law.

I certainly don't intend to discriminate but, I see no way in which such laws serve to do anything except punish those unwilling to participate in the lifestyle choices of others.

I would think a die hard Christian wouldn't want be a dj to begin with. All the bumping and gyrating we cause on the dance floor couldn't be christian like either. Alcohol at a majority of events and other stuff they wouldn't approve of. Not to mention the music most crowds would want played wouldn't be christian like. Goes back to me saying that christian dj's should advertise themselves as such or just hang up the headphones.

There are no religious objections to DJing that I am aware of (and forgive me for I haven't been up on Christian religious teaching since CYO back in the 70s), but there can be objections to lyric content and such, and there are those here that are or are trying to accommodate that by pairing down what they play.

I don't think someone needs to advertise themselves as Christian, just as I don't think a GLBT person needs to advertise themselves as such. I do think that a private individual should have the right to associate and serve those that they wish to. Suppose the tables were turned and a gifted GLBT photographer was asked to shoot pictures at an "Abiding Truth Ministries" event (a big anti-gay association). Should they be allowed to turn down the job because they disagree with the organization or its agenda? I would think so, but then I would think the photographer in the case above should be allowed to as well. Need to be consistent.

I just meant if being a dj will put you at risk of being exposed to many different things that a christian would feel uncomfortable around, why even be a dj.

Sound reinforcement in churches is big and would be right up that persons alley. They get to still play with electronic gadgets while recieving the good word at the same time, win win.

Leave the dj'ing to us sinners.

Doesn't put ME at risk .. But it doesn't have to put anyone else either if they can decide which opportunities to do. And it's not what they are uncomfortable with, in this case it was what their religious doctrine allows them to do. I mean I wouldn't expect a DJ who is Jewish to play on a Saturday if they were observant. Doesn't mean they can't DJ .. just not on Saturday.

I would think that if I did weddings (and I don't normally), that if I decided I was not a match for a couple, for whatever reason, that I could pass, and not worry that they have legal repercussions that could be brought against me becasue I did not want to do their wedding.

I am a Christian. Jesus taught tolerance. I'm happy to do gay/lesbian weddings. I sell a service, I do not sell my morals, they apply only to me.

Best,

Paul

I don't consider myself a Christian, as I haven't been active in 30 years, but I respect religious doctrine for those so inclined. Personally, I don't care, but that individual did. A photographer is also different from a DJ in that it is their job to capture the "loving, touching, squeezing" (as Journey might say) intimate components of a ceremony. If I had a problem with that, I would think I would decline it as well.

I would not DJ a KKK rally, nor a Communist Party gathering for personal reasons .. I would hate to think at some point I would get brought to court for not accepting that if they somehow became protected.

Interesting, as I've done the former, but not that I know of the latter (don't count Uncle Vlad in that -- he's democratic).

The Ku Klux Klan name is in the public domain -- anybody can use it. So you have a zillion groups using the name, some good, some not so good. Most is just symbolic crap -- you don't see many hooded riders on horses these days, hanging people from trees.

There's a few rogue groups I'm aware of -- but they're pretty much nutcakes/White supremacists to begin with. Not much you can do with them -- they're out there in the ozone layer.

You have to cherry pick on the KKK groups -- most are just regular people who like some symbolic ritual, just like a priest doing mass, with his funny outfit on, and some incense and wine.

Crap, so now I have to throw away my white sheets and pointed hats??? Dammit :D:D:D:D:D

Seriously, buying an island is starting to look a lot more interesting.

You'd be surprised Jacob. Most of those folks are fairly normal.

It's sorta like Wicca -- it's mostly symbolic. The cross burning is very similar to the circle cast in Wicca. I've never seen anybody hurt another in either case (if they had, I would have intervened).

I've met some in Texas, not your typical radicals and they basically keep to themselves. I don't know if I looked different they would've reacted the same way but that's something I'll never know.

Hell, yer in Mexico City now -- that's as safe as Amsterdam... xf:D

Yes, but my bunker is pretty well protected :D:D:D:D:D as well as using the tank. I get to go to a wedding in a little while so it'll be a quick sprint back home later on ;)

By the way I had a very good experience in Amsterdam when I was there a few years ago.

The problem is rules are being changed ... A catholic hospital which ran under catholic rules for decades if not longer, now has to provide something (contraception or abortion) that is against church policy and isn't a job of the hospital in the first place.

A judge ruling that photography or DJing is an "essential service" and is bound by law is absurd.

I do believe this was changed. Right after Obama came out with it there were huge protests from many Catholics and the Catholic Church in general. And I believe faith based hospitals where excluded. Though I'm not 100 percent sure.

OK, personal beliefs... I AM NOT A CHRISTIAN!!!

The Christ associated with Catholicism and all of the sects that broke off from the Roman Catholic Church on or after Martin Luther worship a pagan deity that has parallels to the Messiah Yahoushoua of the New Testament. The feasts of those churches are pagan. If this hurts some folks, sorry, wake up and smell the deception.

I am an Israelite that follows Torah and the teachings of Yahoushoua as best as I can.

Modern Christianity, for all intents and purposes, was created by Constantine, a Roman dictator, in order to keep his empire together.

Leviticus 18:22 and Leviticus 20:13 describe going to bed with a man as with a woman as being an abomination. Leviticus 20:13 indicates the punishment for it is death. I am not without sin so I will not cast any stones; however, I will use scripture to teach as indicated in 2 Timothy 3:16. If the teaching is rejected then I will wipe the dust of that place from my feet and move on as indicated in Matthew 10:14 and Luke 9:5.

There are plenty of sites that a gay couple can use to get vendors for their wedding; all they have to do is search Google for "Gay Wedding Vendors". Many of these vendors pay to advertise on these sites so they want business from the gay community.

At one point I was of the opinion that their money is green and it should not matter. I did one wedding and found it personally revolting. I was advertising on the Rainbow Wedding Network at the time. Afterwards I contacted the owner and told him that I was dropping my advertising and just said that gay weddings just weren't for me. He understood and actually refunded part of my money for my honesty.

So, the bottom line is that gay couples can find vendors that cater specifically to them if they want to. There is no reason for this law suit.
