Best Hazer? Please help me pick!

Here are a few pics 1 HOUR after the two minute run. The light beams are still visible! Not exactly how I would like my show to look during a gig, but still visible. Now there is no air intake to suck the haze out, but there is air being pumped into these rooms. I don't consider these rooms air tight, especially the patio. Look back at the previous pics that shows the big crack in the door, even with it closed. BTW, I have plans to change that door soon.

Conclusion of test: It doesn't take much to make the light beams pop out. The oil base haze fluid has a very long hang time compared to my previous water based units. I would think doing a one minute run every 30-45 minutes would keep the light beams visible. Of course a gym or hall with a big HVAC will play a big role in how often you will need to freshn' the room up. One key thing here is fluid consumption due to hang time. Less run time on the unit = less fluid used. I'll have to report back after doing a few gigs to give a better estimate on run time in bigger rooms with a decent HVAC.

Cheers~!

Wow, what a great thread!

Shannon, thanks for the research and feedback.

dobby10 (Mike), what is your experience using your hazer in various Jersey venues? Do you check with them if it's ok first? Have you used it for a wedding? And BTW Mike, it was great meeting you, sharing a meal and talking business while at DJ Times. We'll have to get together again soon.

Looks like a well built little unit, nice! If you want to know the exact power draw, get one of these: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...ctronic+Gadgets-_-P3+International-_-82715001

It'll be the best 20 bucks you ever spend on DJ gear. You can plug in each piece of gear separately and then write down the draw with a Sharpie right on the gear for quick reference. :)

Thanks Steven! Great item, and I just ordered mine.

BTW...did anybody watch that whole "Haze Machine is King" video that Shannon posted? Towards the end, he basically admits to setting off a smoke detector in a venue with a fog machine. Haha!

Hey Wayde, it was great meeting and sharing a meal with you as well!

I just got the hazer in the begining of the month and have used it at one venue so far. I didn't ask, because I didn't want to be told no, haha, but I also didn't run it as much as I would have, had I had permission. I ran it for about 1-2 minutes every 20 minutes and it gave just enough haze to make a difference in the lighting. Of course the venue saw the machine, I didn't try to hide it, it was sitting right under one of my speakers, no one said anything. (Venue was the Crystal Spring Country Club in Hardystown it is a newer building.)
I purchased it because I have 2 parties coming up who specifically requested one and they cleared it with the venue, so at those parties I'll really crank it up. The next party is next weekend on October 2nd (Sweet 16). I should have some good shots of it as they hired a photog through me as well.

For my weddings if they are going with lighting they're typically going with uplighting so it wouldn't make a difference, but I wouldn't hesitate to use it if they went with a dance floor lighting package.

UPDATE:

I recieved my P3 Kill A Watt and connected the HZ-300. The P3 measured 295 watts & 2.4 amps with the HZ-300's compressor running. So the tag on the unit (150 watts) and the manual state (500 watts) something different from what was actually measure.

So I did it... The hazer set off the fire alarm last night. 2nd time I used it... it went off after only about 2 minutes of haze... must have been a duct detector sucking it in. The client said she had received an okay from the venue for haze as I require.
Well the fire department showed up and walked around the room as the dance floor was packed, I played a techno version of The Roof is on Fire, no one noticed the haze machine, nor did anyone notice there was haze, Matre D had no clue, he came over later and said they asked him if there was a fog machine and he said he told them "I've been here the whole night, I haven't seen any fog". I kept my mouth shut, guess the client really didn't get approval.

Lil sneaky there! :tricool: Love it!

I know this is a DJ forum, but this thread is about the haze machine. My band played this Saturday and I used my new HZ-300 for the first time on a gig. I only bumped it for about 10 - 15 seconds every half hour. No smoke detectors were set off. Here's some video footage from the gig. My camacorder stinks in low lighting to really capture the DMX lighting, but the pics in the first part of the video should give you a better idea how it actually looked.

I am controlling the lighting from my drum kit using a Roland SPD-S via midi out to a lappy which is running Freestyler. Not the perfect light show, but there was simply no room to add more. The teaky hut thing gets in the way.

BTW, my wife was a lil tipsy while shooting the video. So, just hang on for the ride! LOL

Thanks Jon!

Something I should mention here that may not be obvious to some. Since I DJ as well, I know what music makes peeps get on the dance floor. Our band plays a wide variety of music and our set list is all around keeping folks on the floor shaking their booty! Most bands put lighting on the band to make them stand out and shine. I put some lighting on us, but I also give the crowd some color too. In that video, I had two Vue 2's on the dance floor and one Vue 3 aimed at the ceiling. Although you couldn't see the ceiling in the video shots, the Vue 3 was adding some bling bling to the room as well.

Peace!

Shannon check your PM's! Anyone else out there own the MBT HZ-300?

I am thinking about getting one so I can use the haze all the time, and some fast dissipating fluid in my smoke machine for effects during the shows.

No experience with that one, sorry. One thing I know for sure is that I want a unit with a pump and not a heater. No fog machine 'wannabe' hazers for me! I like the looks of the inside of the HZ300, looks beefy. Can anyone post a photo of the inside of the American DJ Haze Generator? With the price of the HZ300 on Ebay, $435.00 delivered, I guess it's a no brainer. Too bad I have a brain. ;)

Unfortunately for we DJ's, Smoke/fog/haze machines have long been banned from most high end venues.
Different types of smoke detectors react differently to the visual as well as the chemical composition of haze.
With the advent of no smoking in public, venues have now installed super sensitive smoke detectors in the return ducts of their HVAC systems to garner reduced insurance rates.
False fire alarms can cost the venue hundreds of dollars, as well as valuable time in municipal courtrooms.

BOTTOM LINE---stop using them--they can only lead you to an unfortunate confrontation with the venue management and the local fire department.

AND CHECK THIS--

If the venue can show that they informed you that they have a no haze/smoke/fog policy, and you ignore it and use the fog, and set off the alarm, the fire department can issue you a summons for setting off a false alarm. This can be quite expensive!

Hi folks! I just wanted to give an update on the HZ-300. It's been 8 or so months now since I purchased the MBT HZ-300 and have nothing but good news on this hazer. I use it 2-3 times a month on band gigs with the remote control set on the timer for 4 hours straight on each gig. The haze hang time is great and fluid consumption is AWESOME! I filled up the unit up the day I received it and have NOT added any fluid since then! The fluid level is currently at the 2nd mark below the full line right now! That is unbelievable! I love this thing! Below is a video of my band playing while using the HZ-300. I use some of my DJ lights on the band gigs. On this particular gig, I even brought the laser along to see how it would go over. I use Freestyler to run the light show and I trigger Freestyler from my drum kit using the midi out function of my Roland SPD-S.
Cheers!
Shannon

In that particular vid, I used 3 Chauvet colorstrips, 3 Chauvet 200B LED pars, 2 Chauvet Legend 2000 MH's, 1 ADJ HyperGem & 1 Tektonic RGY laser. On other occasions, I use Chauvet Vue2's and Vue3's on the dance floor along with what was previously mentioned. In the videos below, I used 3 colorstrips, 2 Legend 2000's and 2 Chauvet Q-Spot MH's. One Legend 2000, one Q-Spot and one colorstrip per T-bar on each side the stage. And a T-bar with one colorstrip behind me. The small stage and tiki hut roof in the Congo Lounge makes it hard to get good lighting on the band members without blinding everyone on stage. I wish my wife would have shot the video a lil further back so you could see the MH beams from the crowd point of view instead of being right up close to the stage. Oh well...
