B-52 Act-18XV2

DJ Extraordinaire
Has anybody heard this new bad boy? I really like the new look of it now without those three round ports on the front.

http://www.b-52pro.com/products/ACT18XV2.html

It looks like the amp module is completely re-designed. It now has three selectable crossover frequencies and 135dB max output! I am thinking to pair it with my RCF ART705AS subs for larger events. Since both models of subs have selectable crossover frequencies I thought I would send the full range signal to the Act subs with the crossover set at 70Hz. Then set the ART to 120Hz so it would only reproduce from 70 to 120Hz, sending everything above 120Hz to my FBT 4a tops. I bet that would kick some serious butt!

Can anyone recommend a B-52 dealer?

wow thanks Kirby I didnt even know they sold the B52 stuff.

Both of you guys just need to visit that site more often so that you can become more familiar with Ben's complete product line! :sqwink:

....the preceeding announcement was a paid endorsement...

:sqlaugh:

I inquired about B-52s once with the above endorsed dealer and they tried to convince me that they're junk and that I should buy EV instead. :sqerr:

I'm sticking with the JBLs and Yamahas that I bought from my dad for now, but my next group of passives will most likely be B-52s. It's good to know that there are others who will sell B-52s.

Ducky - I'm sorry that you felt someone here (maybe even me??) led you to believe B-52 is junk. While we have experienced a high failure rate with them compared with brands like EV, we ultimately leave the purchase decision in the hands of the customer. I believe what our customers appreciate most is our integrity and honesty. We don't simply take the easy sale when we believe that we can go to work and improve our customer's experience. Believe me when I tell you it's much harder to tell a customer that they really DON'T want what they asked for, but it has earned us loyal customers for life. That was likely all that we were trying to do for you. It depends on the particular model and the application too. There may have been a better fit for you with an EV product, I don't know. What I do know is that none of our DJ products sales reps are paid a commission, there is no "spiff" or financial incentive to sell one brand over another. For what it's worth, we are authorized dealers for the following brands of speakers:

American Audio
B-52
Cerwin-Vega
Community
Dynacord
EAP
EV
Fender
Gemini
GLI Pro
Grund Audio
JBL
Mackie
Phonic
QSC
RCF
Samson
Tapco
Turbosound

As you can see, there is quite a range in quality and featuresets. Trust me when I say that whomever you dealt with was only trying to put YOUR best interests first. I'm sorry it left a bad taste in your mouth.

Ben

Ben....
that is EXACTLY what I would want to hear from you...
and it WOULD give me full confidence in you and your staff!
and I can bet that Ducky was glad your rep spoke their mind!
I know I would!
(although I cannot speak for her)

I think part of the problem may have been the only EV speaker we own was modified a few years ago into a coffee table because the horn driver died and it was going to cost more than a brand new speaker to replace.

Yeah, it's amazing how expensive quality drivers cost. They rape you. You might want to consider using a less expensive different brand of horn driver to get the speaker back in service. You should be able to find something roughly comparable. It may not be quite as good, but it may be good enough.

They were correct.

B52 is junk. I hate to break it to you like this but it's the truth. 3 of 4 other DJ's on another board are having problems with the Matrix system and the double 15 cabs.

The customer service from B52 is bad also. Why would anyone want to waste money on this stuff is beyond me?

See, funny thing is, B-52 is what I used in college and they proved to be more durable than the EVs (please keep in mind that an average school year for that station saw and still sees between 30-60 gigs in a 38 week time span).

We purchased the SR-1515's when they first came out and now 7 years later, they've been running with zero problems. The only problem I had with B-52 was one of their SR-12's. The horn blew on it and we called them up. The previous guy who ran the station and purchased the SR-12s didn't register them. But B-52 told us to ship the driver back to them and they'd send us a new one.

Now, I'm not sure if that has something to do with the whole active/passive bit, but in case it does, the B-52's I used were all passive.

On a side note, when I said the old EV was turned into a coffee table, I mean it was turned into a coffee table; magnet removed, lights installed, grill repainted.

I use b-52 folded horns that are 8 years old and no problems here. Every company has duds....

If memory serves the old B-52 passive thump boxes were a standard for DJs. I dunno how they worked out when they went active.
