A Song On YouTube

To many ads? Support ODJT and see no ads!
Having many tools available to you whatever the job is an asset. If the connection to wi-fi is strong and stable and you have a good use for it why not take advantage. I have worked with video guys that do live video feeds over wi-fi so family all over the world can see parts of the reception live and i am not too anal to give them a live feed of my mixer so they can have better sound to go with their videos. Because of this I have booked gigs because the video/photo guy has requested/refered me to their client and visa versa...

I don't think we're talking apples to apples here..

Someone doing a live feed over the web (using their own dedicated equipment) and using the out of your mixer is not the same as you downloading or playing a song off of youtube (or other site). I would have no problem with someone needing the output of my mixer either.

Let me also add that the online viewing of said party is probably not as important as your system 'hiccuping' on playing a song from youtube or other.

Bride Says: Can you play "Super Duper Lover of Mine" by the Cheese Crew I'm so sorry I forgot to put it on my list and your final payment and possible tip relies on me hearing this song... can you play it?

You have two options here if this song isn't in your library:

A. Sorry Mrs Didn't ProvideEnoughInfo, but since I didn't know you would die if I didn't have or couldn't play this song but, I don't have it.... to which she runs to the bathroom and cries the rest of the night.... you don't get paid and definately no tip...

B. Let me log into i-Whatever music source you use.... and see if I can get it.... a-ha... the only way I can play it is if I stream it from Youtube,,, give me a few minutes to let the video cache to memory... Tada done... I can play your song now... to which she hands you a fat envelope full of Benjamins and Franklins.... plus a few more Benjis from her mothers perse.

Which option would you choose? A or B
 
If I don't have a song then I just honestly say I don't have it. If it is a special event such as a Wedding and the song was not put on the list for which I asked beforehand, then again tough luck.

I have the ability to go online and either Buy a song/file or if it is new and on my review list that I get, I can do a quick review in less than a minute and get it, however I won't. I DO NOT GO ON THE INTERNET WHILE RUNNING MY DJ PROGRAM, period!
 
Rob, if your final payment depends on them springing a last minute request on ya you need to rework your contract. :dontknow:

Sometimes you have to learn to say, sorry .... "NO."

See it's this "Sorry Charlie" attitude that gets me when you do have the option to satisfy a client you refuse to... why, because you don't want to go on the internet... it just makes zero sense to me....

Do you back yourself up into a corner by guaranteeing (In your contract) that you have EVERY song?

Part of your selling skills and negotiations should be to get paid before the event starts. Think Airlines! What if they had to wait until after your flight to see whether or not you liked the bumpy ride?

That wasn't really the point... I was exaggerating to make a point. I have time and time again made a client extremly happy when I told them that while I didn't have a particular song I would try and download it... and upon succesfully downloading and playing have recieved thank yous and the ocational kiss on the cheek... money aside that made it well worth any risk of going on the internet durring a show.
 
Yes, Robbie....you are correct. ... it's ok to grab a questionably illegal file from the internet instead of being honest with the client?

Why would it be illegal.... ok forget the youtube part jeezus... I purchase it from iTunes.... make ya feel better now?

Paying and downloading is much different than streaming a YouTube video, don't ya think?:trirolleyes:
 
Listen folks... you're never going to win an argument against using tools such as internet access at a live gig to get the job done as being a bad thing to do.... there is just no way you'll ever convince me of that..... if it's on youtube then the rights holders can not bitch if it gets used in a private party..... no rights are being infringed upon when it's on a public website such as Youtube for anyone at anytime to play.

BTW, would you download a set of EV's if you didn't have enough oomph? Sounds like you would, if that was possible... Just to please someone you'll never see again...

It's pretty simple.... if it's up on Youtube it's in the public domain to stream...
