How many here are ADJA members?

I used to be. Joined for the access to insurance and promo only discounts.

But the fiasco about killing the non-profit aspect and run by the membership approach made me wonder if I should renew.... and I have yet to make a decision.

I am a member, and the only reason I re-newed my membership this year is because the local chapter Prez (a friend of mine) asked for my support by serving on the local BOD. When my term is up I will re-evaluate my membership and see if it is still something I wish to be associated with.

I have been saying all along that the ADJA is a for profit venture and should lose the non-profit status, so I can't argue that point.

What does concern me is the departure from being a membership run organization. The national Prez is no longer elected by the membership but appointed by the national BOD which means members have no say in who is spending their money or how it is being spent. I also don't like how the ADJA is slowly stripping local chapters of their individuality.

The first thing the Emperor did was abolish the Senate......Star Wars

I am a member and happy to be one. I feel the organization is promoting the industry in a good light to places that make a difference (not to me personally, but the industry as a whole). I would like to see them focus more on school events as there are several of us who target that market rather than weddings. I've discussed that with them many times and am happy with the conversations. If I had more time myself I would be more active. Too many irons in the fire for me right now to do more than I have already committed to.

I too am a member of ADJA as well as NAME as well as DJA and a few other regional groups.

If one wants a say in the way a group operates, the direction they take, how they should take it, and perhaps wish to be influential, you must be a member.

If one does not belong to ADJA, or NAME, or any of the others, you have no right to criticize anything about their direction or activities. You don't belong? You have no rights to cry about the inside when you're on the outside.

Granted, this is old school thinking but so am I.

I agree with Cap... I am a member and besides liking to have the logo to place around, I do like belonging and feel that in a small way, by belonging that I am supporting the industry that makes my living...

It's the same reason I get Mobile Beat mag and DJ Times mag.... If you aren't supporting the industry in some way... shut up..

I am a member, but joined only to establish credibility. I don't know enough about the org to debate it. But it gave me a logo on my website and therefore served my immediate purpose. Whether I will remain a member once my jobs build up is, at this point, an unknown.

:sqlaugh: :sqlaugh: Another old school concept.

"While there is strength in numbers, there's also guilt by association"

That last part is why I've opted to be institutionally and promotionally "logo free". :sqlaugh: :sqlaugh:

I, too, am a proud member of the ADJA. I truly believe in Drax and the direction that the ADJA is headed in. I am also a board of director for our local chapter (New England). It's my way of being able to give back to the industry that has treated me so well over the past 11 years.

I believe the raw member benefits:

http://www.adja.org/member/benefits.asp
http://www.adja.org/member/newbenefits.asp

negate the cost, dollar for dollar. One of the big things they're working on for a benefit is free web hosting for all ADJA members, webinars with renouned folks like Michael Port (author of Booking Yourself Solid) and industry folks (Scott Faver) are huge, amidst a lot of other things.

I was once a nay-sayer of the ADJA, but with the current administration and current direction, you couldn't ask for better industry representation and commitment from those individuals as we continue to further ourselves.

I think the devil needs an advocate......

OK so sell me Chuck what would any association give me that I cant get on my own?

I am not a member.
I do not feel their benifits justify their cost.
I also feel most members are only members so they may say they belong to the group.

What Cam said. I might add that I do not know anyone personally
( meaning someone with whom I have had face to face conversation) that has found any benefit to them. Insurance can be had for the price of membership- or less, with proper shopping around. No other "benefits" have materialized to my knowledge.

For those that are former members, how involved were you with the chapter meetings? Did you attend? Participate? Or only join for a logo or liability insurance?

Did you think by paying dues & putting a logo on your website was suddenly going to make you a better DJ? You'd suddenly get more $ per gig? or get you a big load of DJ gigs?

In order to get the worth out of your membership, attending meetings & the training seminars & webinars (which many are free) is how you can become a better entertainer & command a higher rate.

In our area, I think most of our members rates now start at about $1K for weddings, There are quite a few who's rates start at $1,500.00

2 yrs ago, many DJs in our area were still at about the $600 starting rate & wondering why others can command more per gig & saying $1000?...NOT IN THIS MARKET!

It's all about education & advancing your entertaining skills & networking & sharing ideas & leads with fellow DJs in your area.

If all you need for credibility is an association's logo, then how credible is the association?

:sqcool:

I* might add that ODJT doesnt sponsor or support any association as we are an open forum full of folks who do , dont and have or have no need for these things to support the industry. I support my industry by being sure to give above and beyond service enhancing credibility for the DJ industry. I also support it trying to provide a positive site for members to improve their business's as well. I also attend Mobile Beat Show Las Vegas to meet and learn with folks in the industry especially ODJT members.
