I have offered to chip in if someone was bearing a heavy amount of the cost and the event was for a close relation.

BYOB or potluck is also a common request. But doesn't work if the event is being hosted at an event hall.

It sounds like these "events" should be in a back yard but instead they are choosing catering and other things that can't be afforded by the host.

i could see if it were a big dinner at a restaurant....attendees handle their own check...and the host takes care of the guest of honors bill...

but to pay a large cover charge for a private party (not at a club) you are invited to is absurd.

It happens here occasionally in community halls but there's no cover charge
