So i joined this forum several months ago and truly enjoy all the banter and information.... but i have slowly realized you guys all have a history here together.. ive heard you speak about chatting on a different site i think...as well as a facebook page if im not incorrect?

So i was just curious...what is the history of this forum and its predecessor?

How long has Mix been like this? lol

sidenote : I was a member of a mixtape forum called Rapmullet for several years and racked up around 60,000 posts before it ended up shutting down... we had tons of famous dj's and rap artists on there... going back and forth...fighting...etc....had some meet and greets as well...a yearly barbaque ... we had the normal characters like Mix and Proformance with similar M.O.'s .... i was a moderator for a while but hated it and quit... everyone wanted ya to pick sides and throw people off...and im not a cop...im a dj... lol.....anyway...i say all that to say i understand forum dynamics

I'm a relative new-comer. Lots of people here that have been here longer than me but the other forum is DJChat.com. To me, it was just too harsh. I'd go there, looking for help/input and every time you'd post you could expect to get slaughtered. When I came here, I noticed the people were magnitudes nicer. Yes, there still will be fights sometimes, but for the most part people respect each other and the tone is more helpful. Now as for Mix, there's not a lot to say and I don't know why he's allowed to remain. I'm glad you're here, Chris. You're one of the good guys.

Big Dan has maintained a near crime-free city here with the aid of some excellent cops, um, I mean mods.

I have no idea how long I've been a member but I do have an impressive array of battle ribbons.

The $1,200.00 War.
The Bose War(s).
The Digital vs Vinyl War.
The "Gotta Be A Real Lawyer" To Understand Contracts Conflicts 1, 2, 3 and will probably flare again in the future.
The Chocolate Fountain Skirmish.

Those are just a few. The others I've retired to the memorabilia closet.

All in all. this remains as my last foothold in the forum world. All the other majors has slipped into the abyss of who gives a shyte.

Kudos and well done, Big Ban.

I don’t know the story of this forum (or any forum for that matter). I’ve been here a little more than 4 years. I don’t even remember what brought me here. I originally stumbled across a different forum first, but that forum was brutal, especially if you made the mistake of identifying yourself as a Christian Conservative. I come here to have fun, and mostly I do. I got into it with one of the mods (who is no longer here) and left for 6 months, but I came back.[emoji4]

I also belonged to DJ Chat. It was difficult to get hooked up there, as new members were not being approved. @steve149 contacted the owner for me and got them to approve me, but it was never as good as this forum, though some of the same members belonged to both forums. The original forum I joined has changed completely... new mods cleaned it up and stopped the all the bullying, but they also lost a lot of the members and participation declined significantly. Seems DJ’s LIKE all that bickering and bullying???[emoji1] I still participate there when someone posts a question I can answer, but very rarely start new threads there. I’m not a social media kind of guy; don’t FB, Tweet, or Instagram. This forum is about as social as I get.[emoji1]

I think the thing I’m attracted to about this forum is there are more members around the same age as me. I’ve only been DJing since I retired. I don’t do it for the money... I don’t do it for free though.[emoji1] I DJ because I needed some activity to keep me engaged (physically and mentally). I already had a huge digitized music collection, I was (am) a computer geek, but I knew nothing about PA systems, lights, and other DJ gear. Much of what I know about DJ gear now, I learned from the people on this forum. Too bad I had already bought my original setup (most of it from my local Guitar Center) before I discovered DJ forums. I didn’t know that the sales people at GC are not really qualified to give good advice to DJ’s. Since being on THIS forum, I have pretty much replaced everything I started my DJ business with, much of it based on the excellent help and advice I’ve received here.[emoji4]

I was a long time lurker over at DJChat.com I've watched Mix have the same interactions with forum members for a long time. It was my personal form of entertainment. I stumbled across this forum and noticed how many DJs from DJChat were over here. I'm still lurking but at least this time I made an introductory post. I've also been wondering if DJchat and Ourdjtalk were related in any way.

I joined in 2008.
I actually was on DJChat first....
and much like Rick, I really hated the attitude there.
If you were new to the business, new to the forum...
or you just had the audacity to ask a simple question...
they'd be all over you.
Found a link to ODJT, and never looked back.

Part of the reason DJChat has this on their home page:

We are working on the issues. Be back soon.

I'm in my 8th year here and was probably on DJChat for most of that time as well. This one is family .. that one had some great folks at one point. I've met Sid and his wife .. but it doesn't seem like it has been a priority for him for many years. Before it went down a year+ ago, it was in limbo for almost as long (no one new could get in) and it wasn't modded much (except by Sawdust).

This board had even more colorful characters when I joined .. Jon Tuck (though I don't miss 2 am calls), Softjock Rick, Canute .. and as many squabbles (Ceasar comes to mind) as today, but in the end, it's more of a family here.

I have personally met, talked to, or privately chatted/emailed with many of the frequent posters here ... I have even seen Ausumm's skirt ( :) ), though I haven't seen the ODJT Pimp coat. I've even met Mix (even after he blew off the dinner invite :) )

Like others, I have bounced around the web for quite awhile - and never really found anywhere that wasn't harsh - or they would take forever to reply and the response had no helpful information. I found this place and would read the posts. At some point, I had some questions to ask, so I joined and almost immediately felt welcomed (which makes you suspicious ;), when compared to the other places). I was not a member of dj chat, which is where a bunch of the folks here came from.

One of the big members here, Jon Tuck, began to barrage me with questions and wanting to know my background and all - that set off a bunch of alarms - and he loved to call at like 2am.

Since I joined, it felt like home. I have never been to a site with such a great group of people - and we have our special members of the family, just like every family does.

Like Steve, I have talked to and met a few - and this place really feels like a family. I haven't met Steve or Mike yet (it's on my to do list) - but I drive by their houses quite often! I also need to meet up with Hanky! In truth, I'd love to meet ALL of you (yes, even Mix)!!!

IMO, this is the BEST little spot on the web! Thanks @Big Dan and @Skippy

Well, we're in that discussion phase of getting together in WV to throw Jeff a bachelor party (about 16 years late) ..

I'm also one of the newer here, with a similar story with DJchat - joined it, but couldn't post for over a year. I did read the mail there, and for sure it was never as comfortable as here. Another tip of the hat to Big Dan!

I have a strong background in Physics, so I have a tendency to get on my high-horse with the smoke & mirrors of the technical marketing aspects of DJ'ing. However, overall there is a lot a knowledge here (from everyone) behind the goofing off we frequently do, which is why I hang out here - although I have sensed a far more serious tone to the discussions since the demise of DJchat.

I’m considering it, but WV is a long drive for me, and I don’t fly anymore. I’ve also been thinking about going to the DJ Expo in August. Mobile Beat (in Vegas in March) is closer for me, but not many ODJT members go, with most being located in the east and northeast. I’m determined to meet some of you guys someday.[emoji4]

I made a mistake and didn't plan properly. I ran out of money and was trying to figure out how I was going to make it from AC to East Orange NJ. I learned if I go again I will have a lot more money and pick a better place to rest my head. I might want to go this year. I need to find out how to get the free pass. Sorry I didn't show up Steve.

Most of the older members of ODJT came here to get away from the drama of the "other" DJ pages...DJChat, ProDJ, etc. It was a board of misfits...people content to do their own thing, not have to be part of some movement (many that Cap mentioned), or be a part of some movement--at ODJT it was all ok. Some conversation about life alongside and outside of DJing allowed and helped build relationships instead of a hostile environment. Through the years, this board has thrived and others fallen to the wayside. In reality, moderation is not often needed and because of the community here, it's not a stressful job. Happy to have stumbled across the board years ago, and thankful that Dan put it together and keeps it going for us all.

SOMEONE (a certain member who shall remain nameless) called us “birds of a feather”.[emoji1] It was kinda asinine, since we’re all SO DIFFERENT in so many ways, but particularly in how we DJ and run our businesses. It prompted me to make this little poster...

... We’re a flock of ANGRY BIRDS (of a feather)![emoji1]

I will let you and the others know when (hopefully not if) the free expo passes are available .. or the codes to get discounts on the full show. I will also unmercifully yell at you should you ignore all that and buy the full price tickets again .. :)

Great thread! Thanks guys it really warms my heart. :)

I originally started what was supposed to be a forum for brides to interact with vendors. DJs at first (as those are who I knew) but I'd hoped to expand it to photographers, caterers, etc. Fairly quickly I realized I had no idea how to target women and shop talk between vendors would likely overrun any talk between brides and vendors. It morphed into Best DJs Online (Yay for GoDaddy domain suggestions), another name, then finally ODJT.

The mods are a great group of people. I was just a kid when ODJT started but surrounded myself with mods that are more experienced than I (read: older :D ). I've learned a lot from them over the years. Leadership, you cannot run a community by consensus of the mods, how to mostly diplomatic, etc. There's still much to learn both from the mods and community at large.

By function of owning the joint I've had to learn a lot about the technical side of things. I've always been somewhat of a geek so that part was fun. The skills I had to learn became the foundation of the skills I use to run my business everyday.

Over the years we've lost (both literally and figuratively) some great ones. We've also shed some not so good fits for ODJT. The community today is a great. I love that I can disappear for a few days and not worry about the mods being stuck dealing with flame wars.

We're going on 13 years now. Frankly 13 years is longer than I've done anything but breathe. A lot has changed in that time but the fundamentals of a good community never change. Here's to another 13 years!

Hey Steve!
My wife went to California without me last year
and said I could do a little traveling myself this year.

I was considering a week in Arizona with a friend....
or going to one of the DJ shows.
If you go to Atlantic City
are you going for more than one day?
