600X800 JPG. Most of the gobos I'm doing these days are fairly simple. Either initials/date or the last name with the date below it. The only thing I'd say to watch out for is to make sure you don't take the lettering too close to the edge. I usually leave a good-sized border around the lettering. Here's mine from this past Saturday:

Projector is a 2500 lumen, Epson that's to the left of the people, at about 15-20 feet from the wall it's hitting.

Depending on throw length, I have had to readjust the font size in relation to the overall jpg resolution. I think the one in the pic had about 70% coverage on the jpg. I did a 100 foot throw a few weeks ago and had to crank the font size down several times. Seems it was in the 30%-40% of the graphic range and still ended up pretty freakin huge on the wall:

With an Image that large, I think it would have worked better to have the date much smaller .. say fitting in the space under Laubie from under the "a" to under the "e". Would have gotten the whole image up higher as well.

But it is nice and sharp.

Thanks everyone for chiming in. I am looking at this one: Epson EX5210 Projector (Portable XGA 3LCD, 2800 lumens color brightness, 2800 lumens white brightness, HDMI, rapid setup)

Looks like it will do the job nicely.

That is the projector I used on both those shots I posted.

Where do ya think I came up with that choice...? dug through some old gobo related postings you made.

he he....it's a good unit. Has both vertical and horizontal keystone (sliders, not software setup) but it's a fairly long throw projector. I put a .jpg on a thumb-drive, stick it in the projector, hit ENTER twice, and the gobo is up. Steve was right about that Laubie gobo. I was slacking and didn't make it until I was already setup. Called up Gimp, threw together a quick slide, but ended up having to re-size it several times for the extra-long throw. In the process I missed that the date should've been smaller. Still, the client was thrilled with it. That's also one of the things the venue folks from this past weekend took note of. They loved the gobo and spent an hour after the gig, talking to me about what all I can do, packages, pricing, etc. Good luck with the projector.

Just ordered the EPSON EX7210. EX7210 WXGA 3LCD Projector

I think you'll be well-pleased. On a side note, had a nice email yesterday from a DJ at sid's board. He said he was discussing with a bride about what she wants for her monogram. She sent him one of my pics with the monogram put on top of a BL-15. When he saw my watermark he emailed to ask which font I use. Kinda gratifying although guess I should've asked which market he's in. ;)

Got to say I enjoy looking at the pics you post of them also. Just now moving into gobos, myself so I am trying to learn all I can also. Been playing with putting a few together, hope to test them when the projector gets here.

Question to all those that use the projector for Gobo's. Where do you usually place the projector so it will not be in the way? I just had a wedding which I was suppose to project to the dance floor, the only problem was the dance floor was a bit further then I expected and the only clear path I had was to place it on the stage which they did not want me to. Other places where surrounded by tables. I ended up not using it on the floor and projected it to the screens I had setup but they originally wanted it on the floor.

It really amazing don't you think that Clients want something and won't allow the provider the privilege of properly setting things up. I mean common sense should tell them what would work and what wouldn't. Just recently I did a site survey and we agreed where the speakers was going to be so that not only would they be in an ideal place but they would not be conspicuous. I was then called and informed that where one of the speakers was going to be, is where they wanted to put a Cake table. I asked the guy if there was any reason why the table could not be moved to the right side of where they wanted it. He then relented. I mean just because they are used to doing things one way its like they don't know how to accommodate.
