Let us know your email address .. I'd be happy to redirect my SPAM.
I have discovered a lot of new items, gadgets etc by reading unsolicited mail. Even my junk mail at home gets read. When I can save an extra $20.00 or more on an Oil Change or other repair/maintenance at my Chevy Dealership, it is worth it.

Nahhhhhh. You can keep the over the counter Viagra and Penis Extenders. Waterless Cooking eliminates the need for those kinds of aids!

If it is unsolicited .. it is still SPAM (I suppose there will be exceptions such as friends or family trying to find you). I expect and accept businesses or individuals who send SPAM once with the ability to opt in on future mailings (and I appreciate that). I tolerate those that make you opt out instead. But it's still SPAM.

Every sender believes either that what they offer will be of benefit to you or to them.

Unsolicited does not mean ANYTHING from someone you don't know or didn't ask them to send you. It means "inclusion" without your consent by list builders, list distributors, and mail-marketers, and post fulfillment services/vendors.

You can still send a relevant business solicitation by email but, it MUST include an option to be removed from any future contact or a notice that no further contact will be made, along with a clear identity of the sender, in order to be compliant.

When a relevant compliant business contact like the one described arrives - comparing it to true SPAM is a rather hysterical reaction.

True SPAM .. fake SPAM .. good intentions SPAM .. if it wasn't requested, or wasn't from someone or some company you correspond or do business with, it is SPAM. You can treat it how you wish.

I said above that I expect it, admire companies that adhere to the conventions of opting in for future contact (or at least making it easy to unsubscribe), and loathe those that do not.

I agree the more insidious stuff is the crap that comes by the boatload from spoofed IPs, ficticious accounts, compromised accounts and bots.

Even a relevant business solicitation, the first time sent, is SPAM .. until YOU decide its merit.

You haven't read the act - because if what you claim were true - we would all be getting rich suing people for sending us email.

I am aware of the act ... CAN-SPAM defines a "commercial electronic mail message" as "any electronic mail message the primary purpose of which is the commercial advertisement or promotion of a commercial product or service (including content on an Internet website operated for a commercial purpose)." It exempts "transactional or relationship messages.

If the sender adheres to the requirements, it is allowed .. but that doesn't not make it SPAM, just not actionable.

You are talking out of both sides of your mouth - and just wrong.
SPAM is not defined by your personal opinion. The Act clearly sets forth the requirements for a compliant communication and that is exactly what the record pool sent.
No one need accept your attempt to label their actions inappropriately.

The act does NOT set forth the definition of the term SPAM though, only what is acceptable. And the definition I use, is NOT my definition.

Webster's definition, by the way, is: unsolicited, usually commercial, e-mail sent to a large number of addresses .

Where do you get off thinking you can have it just one way?
If you advertise yourself to be a DJ you are in fact soliciting on that basis.
You don't get to pick and choose who responds to your solicitation - that is why the Act allows compliant email communication.
Once you advertise or create a public record you have in fact, requested to be recognized as a DJ.
Be careful what you wish for!

Where do you get off being a know-it-all d-i-c-k-h-e-a-d all the time?

I am so over this program.

Bob, I don't think I can have it one way or even MY way, nor did I say that. I agree that legit companies have a right to send electronic advertisement, assuming they are adhering to the requirements, but that doesn't mean what they are sending ISN'T SPAM to me (as in I did not ask for it directly or indirectly).

Many folks, myself included, have clover growing in their lawns .. I didn't plant it, don't desire it, but it is there .. The fact I reluctantly accept it and gave up on removing it, doesn't negate the fact that it is still a weed (to me).

Receiving unwanted e-mails is no different than getting commercials when you watch TV, Seeing Ads when you read the Newspaper or a Magazine, Hearing Commercials when you listen to the Radio, seeing Billboard signs when you drive along the road. It is just a fact of life. It becomes Spam when you request to be removed from a certain mailing list and that entity continues to inundate you with more mail.

No .. because with TV, you have implicitly agreed to the ads when you turned on the channel (you went to them). With SPAM .. it comes to you and only a percentage (in my case) has been agreed to.

And again, I don't disagree that I find some useful .. but that doesn't not make it unsolicited and generally sent in bulk and therefore SPAM.

I get tons of spam (I like the turkey myself)... :)

Having said that -- much comes from my customers. Their contact lists get compromised because they visit too many porn sites, and then my email addys get added to all sorts of harvesting list programs.

Then there are the many sites I have visited, and I ask to be unsubscribed, and that just validates the email addy for them -- they still keep sending me their junk.

There's all these hot chicks in Russia that want to marry me, and they all come in through my support or sales addys. Go figure.

Then there's the DJ sites (retailers) -- I've asked to be unsubscribed to maybe 50 or so of them, and only two have complied. I don't care what new piece of hardware is available for some exorbitant price -- my lappy works fine.

thats why I create different emails for different sites
I start getting spam from one I bounce the email address over to the admin and it gets all the spam back to them again!

That however, has not been the limit of your comments or this thread. If the mail you receive is in compliance then it is disingenuous to post claims about a company "spamming" when in fact they are not.

Anywhere else it's just a plant. :) No better, or worse than any other save for your dislike of it.

Remember, the CAN-SPAM act does not define "SPAM" .. only what electronic messaging is allowed. Don't assume that if it is allowed, it is not SPAM .. that is not in the act.

In fact, WIRED magazine had an article after the act was passed describing the ways one could still legally SPAM: http://www.wired.com/techbiz/media/news/2004/01/62020
